When we think of a gluten free diet, we often think of the challenges of going to the grocery store, or the frustrations of being out to eat. In this unique story, CPT B. Donald Andrasik – who has been on a gluten free diet for well over a decade – shares his story of maintaining a gluten free diet while at war in Afghanistan. The daily struggles of his demanding environment are compounded by the hassles and anxieties of needing gluten free food in a part of the world where resources are scarce. CPT B. Donald Andrasik shows us how - no matter where you are - gluten free food, friends, and opportunities are never far away. CPT B. Donald Andrasik started a gluten free diet at 15 years old, in the late '90s, after experiencing symptoms related to celiac disease for much of his life. Enlisting with the National Guard in Jan. 2001, so he could serve his country, he has maintained a gluten free diet for over a decade of military service. He graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in biology, while earning his commision in the United States Army. From 2011 to 2012 he served a year long deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan. He is currently still serving, in the Maryland National Gaurd today.
