Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995
My Long Journey to Celiac Disease Diagnosis
Like many people, I spent a lot of years, a lot of dollars, and endured many tests and misdiagnoses, before doctors finally discovered that I had celiac disease (also known as coeliac disease or celiac sprue), and needed to eliminate gluten and all gluten-containing ingredients from my diet. Gluten is a protein found in the three main gluten-containing grains: wheat, rye, and barley; and is often hidden in processed foods, and things like soy sauce and beer.
Celiac disease is NOT an Allergy
It's important to know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disease, not a wheat allergy. It's also different from non-celiac gluten sensitivity, gluten intolerance, or sensitivity to gluten.
Gluten-Free Diet
To treat my celiac disease I had to go on a gluten-free diet for life. That meant learning to read food labels to avoid gluten ingredients, and eating a diet of mostly naturally gluten-free foods like meats, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and packaged foods only if they are certified gluten-free or labeled gluten-free, for example gluten-free breads made using gluten-free grains.
My Celiac Disease Symptoms, Diagnosis and Recovery
My symptoms included weight loss, long-term diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain (especially in my middle-right section while sleeping. Once I began and maintained a gluten-free diet, those symptoms slowly disappeared....[READ MORE about my long and winding road to a celiac disease diagnosis and recovery.]

Joint swelling when ill even on gluten-free diet
@Moodiefoodie, Sorry you are having such problems. Gluten exposure, illness and vaccinations are situations in which there is a higher demand for Thiamine Vitamin B1. We need more Thiamine when we have an immune response, whether it is caused by a cold or an inoculation to promote an immune response as with vaccines, or upon exposure to... -

Thiamine supplementation
@knitty kitty yes I have tried higher doses - I think I’ve done 10 g hcl in a day a few times… I know in hospital for Wernicke they can give 500g injections which is obviously absorbed at magnitudes higher. Magnesium really knocks me out so I don’t take it (I could only take it at bed). I did supplement for a while but didn’t feel it helped. I’ve us... -

What else can endoscopy detect
Thanks Scott. Just wondered about the test. Really not much question in my mind as to whether I have it but I thought it would be cool if confirmed during test for celiac. The doctors I have seen over the years think I'm nuts when I ask about it so now I just go about my business. -

1540 TTG Results... Help!
Hi @Scott Adams Thank you for the info it's really useful. The doctor did say the specialist might not do the biopsy but it is the specialist I have been referred to that has to make the diagnosis as far as I am aware so I am waiting for the appointment. Our healthcare system here in the UK is very different to America so forgive me if I don't articulate...
