Celiac.com 10/11/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. We especially get a lot of questions about beverages, like soft drinks and other non-alcoholic drinks.

Specifically, what brands of soft drinks are gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
The vast majority of soft drinks are made with carbonated water, sugar, flavorings and preservatives. Very few soft drinks contain any gluten ingredients, and, if they contain wheat, those ingredients will be labeled as allergens, by law.

Nearly all major soft drinks are made without gluten ingredients. That means that unless a soft drink lists gluten, or wheat as an allergen or ingredient on the label, it is likely gluten-free. However, it's not all that common to see a gluten-free label on soft drinks that are, in fact, gluten-free.

That means that big sellers like Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and nearly every soft drink brand on your supermarket shelf is considered gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease. That includes ginger ales, colas, lemon-limes.

Root beers might warrant a bit more scrutiny, as they can contain a number of additives and flavors. As always, read ingredients and choose carefully.

The following brands of soft drinks are either labeled gluten-free, or else considered gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease:

I am not thinking so, I am currently emailing their customer service to find out if the "natural flavors" could include a malt extract derived from barley... I guess that malt extract can sometimes be a natural flavor and most sodas have this listed so it's a gamble. Will reply when I found out.

Hey, I was wondering when your next updated list for gluten free sodas was going to be?

Just did my periodic call with companies a couple weeks back for what products are still gluten free, and all the major companies said they are no longer gluten free by USA standards.

Pepsico won't say any of their sodas are gluten free anymore. Coke said they now are gluten free based on the codex standards, but not the FDA standards in the USA. And Dr Pepper/Snapple group said that they now have gluten free listed as a 'product highlight' for each individual product, but while Hawaiian Punch and Motts apple juice still have some gluten-free varieties, i couldn't find a single soda that was still listed as gluten-free.

If you happen to find out what the heck happened that so many of these companies no longer make the gluten-free claim, or what sodas we might still have that are confirmed gluten-free, that would be honestly wonderful. Thanks

We've not seen any ingredient changes that would make us update this list. You make many claims here, provide links to back them up. For example, none of the Pepsi beverages we listed have any wheat:

Some food items, just by the nature of what they are and by nature of the manufacturing processes they undergo, simply would not contain gluten so it would be superfluous to put "gluten free" on the labeling. A good example would be milk. The only remotely possible connection I could see soda pop having with gluten would be caramel color.

We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about beers. Specifically, what beers are NOT gluten-free and unsafe for people with celiac disease? The short answer is that nearly every commercially available beer on the market is made with barley, which contains gluten, so unless special enzymes and filtering are used during the brewing process to render them gluten-free, would not be gluten-free.
We've written about gluten-free and gluten-removed beers. We've also written about individual non-gluten-free beers, such as Budweiser, but here's an attempt too list as many non-gluten-fre...
