    General Mills Pulls Plug on Gluten-free Chex Oatmeal

    Celiac.com 09/02/2015 - Cereal maker General Mills is pulling the plug on its Gluten Free Chex Oatmeal.

    This constitutes an ignoble end for a brand that made its official debut last year.

    Chex Gluten Free Oatmeal was available in original, apple cinnamon and maple brown sugar flavors, and made without artificial flavors, colors, preservatives or high fructose corn syrup.

    The decision to discontinue Gluten Free Chex Oatmeal comes amid controversy regarding General Mills methods of sorting oats for its new gluten-free Cheerios.

    I had no idea this product even existed - I only get Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oatmeal, which is fairly expensive. Honestly though, after the cheerios contamination fiasco, I wouldn't trust anything from one of the large cereal manufacturers. And I tend to avoid anything packaged anyway, like gluten-free cake mixes and breads and cookies - I have microscopic colitis from years of undiagnosed celiac, so there are too many other ingredients I react to in addition to gluten.

    I just wanted to let everyone know that while Chex is removing a gluten-free option, Quaker is adding some: There are now gluten-free versions of some of the Quaker oats products, including Quick 1-minute oats. I am hoping for a gluten-free version of the old-fashioned ones as well in the future.

    I applaud General Mills for creating a gluten free oatmeal, but it's a poor quality product carrying a brand name (Chex) that we associate with cereal. I would be more likely to buy it under their Nature Valley brand, but only if it had less sugar.

    Our celiac children and adults in the family loved the Chex gluten-free Oatmeal. It was always the breakfast of choice, but hard to find in the grocery stores. If it were advertised along with the other products made by the company it would surely sell better. We are totally disappointed that it has been dropped from production! Now that everyone in the family loves it, what are we to do? Does anyone care about the consumer and not just the bottom line anymore? Please BRING IT BACK!!!
