Celiac.com 06/25/2019 - Just in time for summer, here are ten of America's top gluten-free potato chip brands. True, potatoes are naturally gluten-free, and so are potato chips, unless they've got added gluten ingredients. However, many brands do not label their chips as gluten-free, and many of these chips may be made on shared equipment. That's not necessarily a big deal, but some people like to play it safe. These brands go the extra mile to make sure their chips are labeled "Gluten-Free," which means that you can breath extra easy about serving them to people with celiac disease.

Do you have a favorite chip that's not on this list? Let us know in the comment section.

So glad to see that Utz made it on the list. I love their chips! Not stated in this listing is if the chips are also fried in peanut oil or have soy ingredients! Thanks!

Why wasn’t Lays chips included? They are gluten-free and say so on the package.

The only problem with the majority of gluten-free chips is the oil used in frying.  It is typically neither cold-expeller pressed nor extra-virgin.  Heat extracted oils contain many toxins: hexane, bleach, deodorizers, pesticides and much more.  A leaky-gut cannot handle these chemicals! The FDA does not regulate the residual toxins in the oils post processing.  Be warned!  Be wise!

I just found out I am Gluten intolerant and need low salt requirements.

I live in Canada and wish to know if No Frills Brand Simple Less Salt Potato

Chips is Gluten Free.  Many are Gluten free but have no markings, while others have "May Contain" Wheat, egg.  Or any of the others in the No Frills Brand Simple

    Potato chips are gluten free?

Can someone help?  Very few people are willing it seems.

    Thank you

"Many are gluten free but have no markings" Todd, how do you know if they are gluten free if they have no markings? By "no markings" do you mean there is not an ingredient list on the package or do you mean they aren't marked "gluten free" or "certified gluten free"?

And who do you mean when you ask for help but then add, "Very few people are willing it seems"? Who are you referring to?

"May contain wheat, egg" probably means their ingredient formulation varies from time to time. Or, if you buy a box of these chops that comes with several different flavors it may mean that some of the flavors may have wheat and/or egg in them.

The best you can do is just read the ingredient label and look for ingredients that might contain wheat, barley or rye. In my experience, plain potato chips and plain corn chips are safe for the no gluten crowd. It's the flavored ones that have some kind of coating or spices that may contain wheat that you have to watch out for.

Hi, thanks for the post.  I think this conversation could drill down a bit further.

Lays and Utz are gluten free, but not necessarily celiac-safe.  If they are packaged on equipment used for non-gluten-free flavors or for pretzels, there is cross-contamination that is the bane of our diets--for many of us!  I have had reactions from both brands.  To offer an alternative, I know that Deep River has gluten-free certification (<= 20 ppm) and tasty flavors.

This reminds me of breakfast cereal lists I have seen online.  Yes, Cheerios separates the wheat kernels from the oat before making the cereal, but the oats have already been contaminated with gluten.  Gluten-free and celiac-safe are often not the same.  Thanks for the outlet to share information.

Thanks for the good information. The problem I see with "celiac-safe" is that it mainly would apply to that group of celiacs who are on the more sensitive side. For the majority of celiacs, the chips and cereals you reference are safe. According to FDA rules, "Gluent Free" cannot be used unless the product meets the <20ppm standard. So even if these chips and cereals you refer to have some CC they apparently still meet the standard. Of course, there is much discussion about whether or not 20ppm is an adequate standard.
