    Modern Medicine's Perspective on John F. Kennedy: Did he have Celiac Disease?

    Celiac.com 02/23/2008 - This week it was revealed that scores of previously unknown files and boxes of other materials pertaining to JFK, Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby have been discovered in the Dallas County Courthouse.  Conspiracy theorists and historians will be particularly eager to have access to these materials, and the life and death of our 35th president will once again be examined in great detail.

    The reason I mention this news item here is that in the course of my research for my upcoming book on living with celiac disease, I read an article by Columbia University's Dr. Peter H.R. Green in which he chronicled the many illnesses of President Kennedy.  Apparently, he suffered from severe and painful medical problems that began in his childhood.  Dr. Green writes,

    "In Kennedy's adolescence, gastrointestinal symptoms, weight and growth problems as well as fatigue were described. Later in life, he suffered from abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, osteoporosis, migraine and Addison's disease. Chronic back problems, due to osteoporosis resulted in several operations and required medications for chronic pain. He was extensively evaluated in major medical centers including the Mayo Clinic and hospitals in Boston, New Haven and New York. Among the multiple diagnoses were ulcers, colitis, spastic colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and food allergies. His medications included corticosteroids, antispasmotics, Metamucil and Lomotil. However it is not clear that his physicians obtained a definitive diagnosis. Review of this medical history raises the possibility that JFK had celiac disease."

    Wow.  That gives one pause, doesn't it?  Imagine that this president -- who had access to the finest physicians of the day -- might have suffered from a disease that could have been relieved by a simple change in diet if only the diagnosis had been made, let alone considered.  Don't you feel lucky that your physicians have access to modern medical knowledge which has only understood as recently as 2003 that over 3 million Americans suffer from celiac disease?

    We are indeed fortunate to live in a time with researchers like Dr. Alessio Fasano at the University of Maryland's Center for Celiac Research, whose studies have put celiac disease on the radar screen of physicians from around the world.  We can still do more to educate doctors and others about celiac disease so that no one has to suffer needlessly with incorrect diagnoses.

    Certainly sounds plausible. Just imagine how much public knowledge and medical research would have been advanced during his presidency if he had been diagnosed. I think of the fictional president Bartlett on the TV show West Wing, whose diagnosis with MS led to public awareness of the disease...

    If a sample of President Kennedy's DNA could be tested, a definite diagnosis could be discovered. This could benefit his family and others. I would be amazed if testing occurred AND made public.

    Universal testing / screening is the key. The issue is that doctors and medical facilities are failing to test.

     

    If we wide-polled patients following an annual physical, I think it would be evident that there are Celiac symptoms and no Celiac testing, consistently.

     

    True, people in the public eye bring media attention and some awareness.

     

    But when testing is always part of a physical exam, then we will see resolution of the 97% missed diagnosis - and changes to some of our most prevalent serious health issues.

     

    There are other diseases for which we do not wait for obvious symptoms. Celiac should be entered into this category.

    With more information like this out there we may get more research into celiac and gluten intolerance. Now to get doctors to realize that non-celiac gluten intolerance is real, and the diet is the proof of it's importance.

    Interesting article, and it's entirely possible of course. Do note thought that uncontrolled/under-treated Addison's Disease can also cause similar symptoms.

     

    My comment to the first poster:

     

    Why do you assume that Clinton has Celiac Disease? He may really have a wheat allergy.

     

    I have Celiac (bloodwork and biopsy proven) as well as anaphylaxis (like a peanut allergy) to wheat.

     

    People (including adults) can and do develop severe and sometimes life-threatening allergies to wheat. This is an entirely different thing from Celiac Disease.

     

    Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease. Wheat allergies are IgE mediated food allergies. Think of peanut allergies...same sort of thing...but to wheat.

     

    I honestly don't know what Clinton suffers from...but I wouldn't automatically assume Celiac...

     

    People with Celiac have to remember that not *everything* is Celiac...

    Since I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease I look at people's body stature, I have often wondered if Jackie Kennedy had Celiac Disease. I read somewhere where her cause of death was intestinal non-Hodgkin's Disease.

    In 2002 I thought the connection was interesting, but Mr. Adams who owns this site thought my ideas on the matter were wrong. By now posting the truth--he has reversed course, but I see it took six years--in addition to the 39 years it took to get Kennedy's medical information publicly released--to get this out.

    Silliness seems to continue on this, and my own father by the way personally nominated Mr. Kennedy to be President as a delegate to the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles--a peripheral fact, but one that tends to underscore "the burning of my Celiac balls" over this type of delay!! [scott Adams' Reply: Just for the record I ran an article on this topic way back in 2002, so I'm not sure why you think I've ignored this issue.     Nope. I have Addison's and I was tested for Celiac. I have read about his illnesses and his symptoms and treatment were exact to mine. And I have been tested for Celiac and I don't have it, BUT TRUST IT CAN MIMIC IT PERFECTLY. He had Schmitts Syndrome like me I believe which is Hashimoto's and Addison's put together.

    Celiac.com 10/21/2010 - Jolly Pumpkin master-brewer Ron Jeffries just took home a gold medal from Denver's annual Great American Beer Festival. This is important, because the beer, Jolly Pumpkin's Belipago India Pale Ale, won in the "Specialty Beer" category against beers made with traditional malted barley. That's right, a gluten-free beer won in a respected competition against beers malted with barley. For beer lovers, and gluten-free people, and gluten-free beer lovers that is an earth-shaking achievement.
    Since their debut, Jeffries and Jolly Pumpkin have racked up a slew of awards for their unique, oak-aged artisanal sour beers, including a gold medal for their Oro De Calabaza, a strong Belgian ale brewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of a Biere De Garde.
    However, Jeffries will tell you that path of Jolly Pumpkin was not an easy one.
    "It's still difficult to sell sour beer, it was even more difficult seven years ago when we first opened," says Jeffries, fresh off winning a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival for his Belgian-style, gluten-free India Pale Ale, "Belipago."
    Jolly Pumpkin has been well received over the years at the GABF. The fact that Jolly Pumpkin's prizes are a reflection of the beloved following the beer has developed among its legions of fans, seems like the icing on the cake for Jeffries.
    "It wouldn't be a lot of fun if we won all these awards but then everybody said, 'We just don't like your beer,'" Jeffries says. "It's fantastic to have everyone enjoying the beer than to have that validated, if you will, by a group of judges. That feels pretty nice too."
    Jeffries says he created Belipago as a beer for anyone to enjoy, not just a specialty beer for people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. The challenge was finding a recipe that yielded a great beer without using malted barley or wheat, traditional brewing ingredients, which contain the protein gluten.
    They started small, and slowly developed and improved the recipe, Jeffries says, in part because "brewing gluten-free was all new to me. I didn't really enjoy the flavor of other gluten-free beers out there. It was important to me to brew something that craft beer drinkers could enjoy."
    In the end, Jeffries devised a recipe for a dry hopped, Belgian-style IPA, that incorporated sorghum, agave, chestnuts and other components. The resulting beer, Golden Manatee Belipago has a more pronounced floral hop character than most other Jolly Pumpkin beers, with hints of spice.
    According to official tasting notes, the beer pours with a golden brown color with a white head, and features a huge and citrusy aroma, medium heavy mouthfeel, with an explosion of citrus and flower notes followed by a nice bitterness. The yeast was very pronounced too, very nice. Finish had more citrus and some spice. A refreshing and very good Belgian-style IPA.
    On his victory, Jeffries says "I think we succeeded in accomplishing what we wanted to do with the beer. To win against regular malt beers with a gluten-free beer, that was very satisfying. I wanted to make sure that people wouldn't say, 'Well, that was good for a gluten-free beer.'"
    Jeffries plans to first grow distribution for Belipago through local drafts before he moves to bottling. He explained that small technical issues remain before they can begin bottling the beer commercially, but they are working to make that happen as soon as possible.
    "We have had a lot of interest about Belipago," Jeffries says.

    Celiac.com 09/26/2012 - After bringing home a gold medal in the pole vault, American Olympian Jenn Suhr, 30, plans to celebrate with 'a giant slice of gluten-free pizza! I follow a gluten-free diet, but I can’t wait for some good pizza,' she said.
    Olympians who plan to celebrate with their favorite foods after their performances include swimmer Matt Grevers, 27, gymnast John Orozco, and shooter Jamie Gray, among others.
    Grevers, who won gold in the 100m backstroke and a silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay, who headed straight for the nearest McDonald's, where he ordered a vanilla milkshake. 'It was delicious,' he added.
    The same was true for gymnast John Orozco, whose pre-Olympic training diet consisted of lean meats and vegetables.
    Orozco went big and ate pizza, chicken nuggets from McDonald’s,' and 'a big cookie. The 19-year-old paid a bit of a price for his exuberance: 'After that my stomach was destroyed,' he said.
    After his gold medal performance in shooting, Jamie Gray collecting his medal, and headed straight to USA House, where he treated himself to a steak, cooked rare.
    'It was awesome. They didn’t have it in the buffet so the chef made it and brought it out himself.'
    Silver medal hurdler Michael Tinsley may have to wait a bit longer to celebrate: He wants a burger from his favorite spot in Austin, Texas.

    Celiac.com 04/22/2015 - Ground Breaker Brewery is a Portland-based 100-percent dedicated gluten-free brewery that has been selling their popular ales throughout the Pacific Northwest since 2011.
    Ground Breaker specializes in bold flavored ales, including dark ale made from roasted chestnuts and lentils, a bright IPA of roasted buckwheat and citrusy Crystal hops, seasonal specialties like St. Denny dubel-style ale, and Squash Ale and Coffee Pale from the Experiment Ale Series.
    Currently, Ground Breaker ales are available in a large 22-ounce bottle that seems to be impeding their efforts to expand their reach into more pubs, restaurants, and grocery stores.
    The company founder James Neumeister believes that smaller, lighter cans will help the company’s efforts to grow distribution. To that end, Ground Breaker is looking to raise $20,000 in a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a canning operation.
    If funded, Ground Breaker plans to have its IPA No. 5 and Olallie Ale canned and ready for sale by the beginning of June.
    Kickstarter rewards start for contributions of $5 or more, and include locally designed coasters, kozies, sweatshirts, pint glasses, and more.
    For donations of $2,000 or more Ground Breaker will name summer seasonal ale after you.

    Celiac.com 06/23/2018 - If you’re looking for a great gluten-free Mexican-style favorite that is sure to be a big hit at dinner or at your next potluck, try these green chili enchiladas with roasted cauliflower. The recipe calls for chicken, but they are just as delicious when made vegetarian using just the roasted cauliflower. Either way, these enchiladas will disappear fast. Roasted cauliflower gives these green chili chicken enchiladas a deep, smokey flavor that diners are sure to love.
    Ingredients:
    2 cans gluten-free green chili enchilada sauce (I use Hatch brand) 1 small head cauliflower, roasted and chopped 6 ounces chicken meat, browned ½ cup cotija cheese, crumbled ½ cup queso fresco, diced 1 medium onion, diced ⅓ cup green onions, minced ¼ cup radishes, sliced 1 tablespoon cooking oil 1 cup chopped cabbage, for serving ½ cup sliced cherry or grape tomatoes, for serving ¼ cup cilantro, chopped 1 dozen fresh corn tortillas  ⅔ cup oil, for softening tortillas 1 large avocado, cut into small chunks Note: For a tasty vegetarian version, just omit the chicken, double the roasted cauliflower, and prepare according to directions.
    Directions:
    Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a cast iron or ovenproof pan until hot.
    Add chicken and brown lightly on both sides. 
    Remove chicken to paper towels to cool.
     
    Cut cauliflower into small pieces and place in the oiled pan.
    Roast in oven at 350F until browned on both sides.
    Remove from the oven when tender. 
    Allow roasted cauliflower to cool.
    Chop cauliflower, or break into small pieces and set aside.
    Chop cooled chicken and set aside.
    Heat 1 inch of cooking oil in a small frying pan.
    When oil is hot, use a spatula to submerge a tortilla in the oil and leave only long enough to soften, about 10 seconds or so. 
    Remove soft tortilla to a paper towel and repeat with remaining tortillas.
    Pour enough enchilada sauce to coat the bottom of a large casserole pan.
    Dunk a tortilla into the sauce and cover both sides. Add more sauce as needed.
    Fill each tortilla with bits of chicken, cauliflower, onion, and queso fresco, and roll into shape.
    When pan is full of rolled enchiladas, top with remaining sauce.
    Cook at 350F until sauce bubbles.
    Remove and top with fresh cotija cheese and scallions.
    Serve with rice, beans, and cabbage, and garnish with avocado, cilantro, and sliced grape tomatoes.

    Whatever your rationale for avoiding gluten, whether its celiac disease, a sensitivity to the protein, or any other reason, it can be really hard to find suitable places to eat out. When you’re on holiday in a new and unknown environment, this can be near impossible. As awareness of celiac disease grows around the world, however, more and more cities are opening their doors to gluten-free lifestyles, none more so than the 10 locations on the list below.
    Perhaps unsurprisingly, the U.S is a hotbed of gluten-free options, with four cities making the top 10, as well as the Hawaiian island of Maui. Chicago, in particular, is a real haven of gluten-free fare, with 240 coeliac-safe eateries throughout this huge city. The super hip city of Portland also ranks highly on this list, with the capital of counterculture rich in gluten-free cuisine, with San Francisco and Denver also included. Outside of the states, several prominent European capitals also rank very highly on the list, including Prague, the picturesque and historic capital of the Czech Republic, which boasts the best-reviewed restaurants on this list.
    The Irish capital of Dublin, meanwhile, has the most gluten-free establishments, with a huge 330 to choose from, while Amsterdam and Barcelona also feature prominently thanks to their variety of top-notch gluten-free fodder.
    Finally, a special mention must go to Auckland, the sole representative of Australasia in this list, with the largest city in New Zealand rounding out the top 10 thanks to its 180 coeliacsafe eateries.

    Celiac.com 06/21/2018 - Would you buy a house advertised as ‘gluten-free’? Yes, there really is such a house for sale. 
    It seems a Phoenix realtor Mike D’Elena is hoping that his trendy claim will catch the eye of a buyer hungry to avoid gluten, or, at least one with a sense of humor. D’Elena said he crafted the ads as a way to “be funny and to draw attention.” The idea, D’Elena said, is to “make it memorable.” 
    Though D’Elena’s marketing seeks to capitalizes on the gluten-free trend, he knows Celiac disease is a serious health issue for some people. “[W]e’re not here to offend anybody….this is just something we're just trying to do to draw attention and do what's best for our clients," he said. 
    Still, the signs seem to be working. D'elena had fielded six offers within a few days of listing the west Phoenix home.
    "Buying can sometimes be the most stressful thing you do in your entire life so why not have some fun with it," he said.

    Celiac.com 06/20/2018 - Currently, the only way to manage celiac disease is to eliminate gluten from the diet. That could be set to change as clinical trials begin in Australia for a new vaccine that aims to switch off the immune response to gluten. 
    The trials are set to begin at Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast Clinical Trials Centre. The vaccine is designed to allow people with celiac disease to consume gluten with no adverse effects. A successful vaccine could be the beginning of the end for the gluten-free diet as the only currently viable treatment for celiac disease. That could be a massive breakthrough for people with celiac disease.
    USC’s Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said trial participants would receive an injection of the vaccine twice a week for seven weeks. The trials will be conducted alongside gastroenterologist Dr. James Daveson, who called the vaccine “a very exciting potential new therapy that has been undergoing clinical trials for several years now.”
    Dr. Daveson said the investigational vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance to people with celiac disease.The trial is open to adults between the ages of 18 and 70 who have clinically diagnosed celiac disease, and have followed a strict gluten-free diet for at least 12 months.
