    Oprah Tweets Love of Bread, Losing Weight

    Celiac.com 02/05/2016 - Oprah Winfrey may have just officially pardoned gluten, and her "glorious revelation that bread is okay" is causing a big stir.

    That's why it's such a big deal when the famous television producer and talk show diva sings the praises of gluten in a recent Tweet about the virtues of bread. According to Winfrey, who Tweeted an ad for Weight Watchers, she eats bread every day, but still managed to lose weight. Moreover, she doesn't just eat bread and lose weight, she loves bread. She heaps high praise upon it. Oprah's Tweet contains a video that reiterates her deep love of bread.

    Oprah's Tweet read, in part:

    "Eat bread. Lose weight. Whaaatttt? #ComeJoinMe"

    Find more Tweets from Oprah on Twitter. Winfrey, of course, owns 6.4 million shares of Weight Watchers, whose stock prices have skyrocketed. The New York Daily News has called this a "$20 million Tweet."

    So, will Oprah help make bread cool again? Only time will tell. Of course, for people with celiac disease and gluten-intolerance, bread will never be cool again, but that's another story.

    Thanks for your great newsletter. I've been gluten free since 2006.

     

    I can understand your concern. I'm sure some will be overly influenced and take it as an edict that gluten is great. Hopefully, most will be a bit more discerning.

     

    I think Oprah's just saying she loves bread. Who doesn't? The point she's making is, she's been able to lose weight and still feel satisfied and enjoy food.

     

    Nowadays, there's plenty of information available to everyone regarding gluten issues. People can find it and look into it on their own.

     

    Does Oprah have a gluten problem? Who knows? I know she's had some thyroid issues. I hope she gets them resolved fully.

     

    I'm happy for her that she's giving weight loss another go, and I'm sure we all wish her the best of success in this regard.

    Completely agree with you, Kelly. So many new sandwich shops have popped up since I was diagnosed. People rave about these places, yet I don't get to try them out. It's brutal. I want so badly to have regular bread again. I don't begrudge people who can eat it without issue.

    This article implies that bread has to have gluten in it.

    I currently enjoy fantastic locally made gluten-free bread from Canyon Bakehouse in Loveland, CO. I realize not everyone has access to delicious gluten-free bread. You can order it on line and have it delivered, along with about 12 other gluten-free brands that are excellent. We have a local chef here in Boulder, CO, who is Italian. She is marketing her own line of gluten-free products. I make all of my holiday cookies with her "Bella Gluten Free all purpose flour" and my friends can't tell they are gluten-free (high praise in my book).

    According to Weight Watchers point system, a piece of bread is 2 pts, whether its gluten-free or not. It is still a matter of calories, glycemic index, and the rest. Its still a carb even though it's gluten-free.

    I have been off gluten for >10 years, and eat all kinds of delicious food, including bread, pasta, cookies, cake, bagels, all excellent quality. Its out there people, you just need to look for it, delicious gluten-free food. But you can still eat more than you need to, so with all things, moderation!

    I couldn't agree more! I've been gluten free for 15 years now & would love to eat "real" bread, cake, etc. I have found that Udi's brand is pretty good but prefer to bake my own. Recently, I discovered Bob's Red Mill Whole Grain mix & I am in love with bread again!!! So much so that I need to limit my intake so as not to pack on the pounds. Leave Oprah & all those non-celiac, gluten-sensitive folks alone. I'm not diabetic, but my diabetic friends don't get upset when I have some food they can't indulge in! Give it a break, People!!

    I actually lost weight eating bread too.

     

    Gluten seemed to just go right through me and it took all the important vitamins and minerals with it, so that I was diagnosed with osteoporosis at 43.

     

    Oprah on the other hand is representing Weight Watchers (for a fee). Weight Watchers makes money helping people lose weight. One of the most highly touted ways to lose weight these days is through avoiding gluten, so Oprah is saying that for those who can eat gluten without negative health effects, Weight Watchers will let you eat it still.

     

    There is also a bit of a backlash (I think) against the gluten free diet where those who do not have a "celiac" diagnosis, but are gluten intolerant are now being stigmatized as vanity diets. It would be nice if Oprah acknowledged that there are those who can't eat it or chose not to eat it and that is ok too.

     

    People are strange. I don't really care what anyone else eats. I just want to be able to eat safely and I've found that the more people who avoid gluten, the better and less expensive my options.

    The statement that Oprah has "pardoned" gluten is insane. She said she likes bread. If she eats it and isn't a celiac or gluten sensitive, why is her statement that she likes bread even an issue for this site? I love bread. Wish I could still have it, make it, smell the real stuff. I can't but I don't impose that on other people. Until someone takes a stand that gluten is fine for everyone, I don't have a problem. An article like this is enough to make me want to get off the mailing list.

    hmmm. She loves bread. Ok fine. She eats bread and can loose weight. Who cares. Look at her, weight on, weight off, weight on...... I'm happy you love to eat bread. I'm happy I don't eat bread and am healthy.

    Perhaps your one of the fortunate ones who has a diagnoses. This is not the case with everyone. I just talked with a man the other day who almost lost his daughter before they were able to get a diagnoses. I too have a diagnoses. I do not want to eat bread or anything that contains gluten ever again. I'm perfectly satisfied with my diet. I not only have celiac, I also have an intestinal fungal infection to deal with. This means no starch or sweets except a small amount of fruit. I live on meat and vegetables dishes, prepared at home and I do not crave the things that I cannot have. For the most part, I eat no grains at all. From what I read from various doctors, the gluten in the wheat we have today does not even resemble the gluten in the wheat we had 50 years ago. I remember when wheat grew 5-6 feet tall. Now it grows to about 3 feet.

    I agree that those who can eat gluten containing bread should enjoy it. Having celiac disease has not been a pitty party for me. I discovered a new love of cooking and I am a lot healthier for it and I eat some great homemade gluten free breads. Trader Joe's also makes a great whole grain bread that I eat just about every morning for breakfast. Having 2 other autoimmune diseases as well as celiac disease has put a whole new perspective on life. Enjoy what you have for you do not know what tomorrow brings. Enjoy your bread Oprah!!

    She is singing the praises of BREAD. Not GLUTEN. Terribly misleading opening to article. Disappointed that celiac site writer has to twist Opra'hs happiness into "oh woe us poor celiacs". No wonder people roll their eyes at our diet.

    My daughter has celiac disease and takes a sandwich in her lunch to school every day. Just because you are gluten free, by necessity or by choice, does not mean you cannot eat bread. It has come along way, trust me. As far as Oprah Winfrey's comments about bread, in my opinion it has nothing to do with her thoughts on gluten. She just enjoys bread and good for her that she is able to fit it into her diet and continue to lose weight. If removing gluten from a persons diet makes them feel better, celiac or not, I cannot imagine a comment by one person is going to change that. If it does, then they have bigger issues than bread!

    I laughed when I saw the commercial and told my husband that she needs to start eating gluten free bread and see how much she likes it then. I used to love bread too until I had to give it up permanently and opt for the gluten free/taste free/bad texture variety.

     

    At least she is promoting a diet like Weight Watchers instead of jumping on the gluten free diet bandwagon to lose weight. The misconception that many people have equating gluten free with healthier drives me nuts.

    Right on, Kelly - and I have celiac. This type of an article is just so much rubbish. What is it even doing on here ?? So wish I could join Oprah in eating bread every day.

    It's not only that gluten based breads are bad for those with celiac and intolerance, it's also that gluten is bad for humans in general. There have been many studies linking gluten intake to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, skin disorders, IBS and many many other diseases and disorders.

     

    A friend who is a medical student said to me: There is a reason why a cow has 4 parts to its stomach, so it can digest it properly.

    I eat bread every day. Gluten-free bread. It's as good as anything I ate before being diagnosed with celiac. Oprah is a master manipulator making way too much money off of her weight issues.

    I'm sure that bread manufacturers are paying her to say this. (She doesn't seem to do much for free.) You know they're hurting with this huge gluten-free trend and to have someone like Oprah buy Weight Watchers and then spread the word that you can eat bread and still lose weight? Everything they could want!

     

    I miss bread every day: the real thing. I don't even buy the gluten-free crap they sell at the store.

    Really? Really? Oprah obviously loves everything. If she didn't, she wouldn't have yo-yo dieted her entire life. She's a terrible example, yet there are people who still hang on her every word.

     

    And now she essentially owns Weight Watchers. How much is enough, Oprah? Do you want to be remembered as the Gordon Gekko of the 21st century? She cloaks her wealth with the occasional, obscenely public show of charity, but something is obviously still missing from your life if you need to fill it with things. Maybe coming out of the closet is the answer.

    Really, I believe that only simpletons will follow Oprah down this path. She has NEVER been able to control her weight, with all of her diets. She has yet to learn moderation.

     

    As with Celiacs and those who are Gluten Intolerant, we have to use will power and discipline to avoid eating foods that are not good for us.

     

    If you CAN eat bread, good for you. But should you eat bread? Quite another matter.

    Some folks have to learn the hard way. I was one. We cannot save Oprah from herself, she has to live her life making her choices and decisions based on what she knows. Who people listen to is also their choice. This is truly an educational moment! Don't blow it.

    I would LOVE nothing more than to enjoy a New York pizza with an ice cold Budweiser!! And even better, just eating out at restaurant without the fear of getting ill! Gluten free is awful, extremely expensive and difficult away from home plain and simple. And no matter how hard one tries it is not the same as normal products that are intended to contain gluten.

     

    So, if Ms Oprah loves bread and eats it everyday then good for her!

    Gluten might make other people stronger and gluten free diets my be good for others. When you talk about celiac patients gluten is never good for them. If you have not been a celiac patient you don't understand how having no gluten can take your weight down and if you already only way 95 pounds and never any higher, a gluten free diet is not going to make you stronger. If you are not a celiac patient gluten free diets won't bother you as much because you can eat other foods. Some celiac patients have more than just gluten problems, some have nut, dairy, soy, and other allergens. So stop telling the celiac patients the diet is good for them unless you have the disease and are on the diet. Gluten free diets can make a celiac patient lose weight but that's not a problem they have. You cannot compare people without this disease to people who have it. That's what people are doing. Take one day in a celiac patients diet and yes you will not be energetic, strong, healthy, and happy like you people who are not gluten intolerant. My son has had this problem since he was born and was diagnosed at 15, yes by then he was 90 pounds 5 foot 8 and weak. So you cannot compare Oprah and athletes to these people who are suffering everyday. How would you like to sleep half of your life since you have no energy. How would you like to never experience the outdoors since you cannot stay awake long enough. How would you like to be sick all the time and not experience the good things in life. So stop comparing yourself to these innocent children who are not living a life of luxury like you do. Try paying for a cake mix for seven dollars, or a cookie which costs 3 dollars. Then tell me we should not make a big deal out of Oprah and her bread. People like her are not helping the cause by making it look like gluten is not bad for you. She doesn't know the half of it. She has a family and some of these people will never experience this in their lives.

    I have been gluten-free for more years than I can count. Today is a cake walk to be gluten-free compared to 40 years ago. There are many excellent products out which are down right delicious.

     

    Oprah can't lose weight if she lives on bread, impossible, the carbs are the carbs, count points, calories, etc. Everything in moderation is the answer.

     

    All products at our grocery are mostly over engineered products which is causing many problems with our intestinal tracts.

     

    A great flour just on the market and readily available is Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 All Purpose gluten-free Flour. I have tried many, many brands and this one gets 10 Stars from me. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed, promise. You can use a recipe from 100 years and just convert some the ingredients i.e. Baking powder, vanilla etc. you get the idea and it is awesome tasting and no one with no it is gluten-free.

     

    If Oprah went gluten-free her thyroid would improve quickly.

    The 70-year old Oscar-winning actor says he feels "great," and credits the gluten-free diet with boosting his memory and transforming his health five years after cancer battle.

    Tennis' top ranked Djokovic let out a resounding bellow after claiming his own eighth Grand Slam of his own, before a bit of good-natured turf snacking.
    The 28-year-old joked that he had incorporated Wimbledon grass to his gluten-free training diet because "I was assured that's it's gluten free, it's not processed, completely organic and natural and I could eat it," he said. "So I had no reaction."

    Celiac.com 09/17/2015 - This week in gluten-free celebrity news, Kourtney Kardashian rocks an eye-popping Agent Provocature bikini as she frolics in the summer surf in St. Barts.
    Kourtney Kardashian was in St Barts earlier this month, showing off her killer post-baby curves while shooting scenes for Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
    According to UsWeekly, the fit mother of three has been eating only organic, gluten-free foods and doing strict portion control to return to her pre-pregnancy size.
    Meanwhile, Rosanna Davison is drawing heat for making claims that link gluten consumption to autism, arthritis and schizophrenia.
    Initially, the former Miss World posted that the had given up gluten after finding that it gave her a skin rash and upset her stomach. So far so good.
    But when she added that her husband had been healing from rheumatoid arthritis after ditching gluten, the internets erupted with their particular brand of instant fury.
    Arthritis Ireland tweeted that: no evidence to suggest that the serious auto-immune disease of #RA can be managed through a gluten-free diet.
    While RTE journalist Philip Boucher-Hayes called Davison's comments "dangerous nonsense…with real world implications for people's health and wallets."

    Celiac.com 01/15/2016 - In his three years with the NFL, New York Giants lineman, Justin Pugh has made himself a key part of his team's strong offense. At 6-foot-4 inches, 305-pounds, and with strength and speed to match, Pugh has wrecked havoc on opposing linemen.
    Pro Football Focus, which monitors NFL games, and assigns grades based on player performance, currently ranks Pugh as one of the league's top ten guards.
    Now word is out that Pugh has switched to a gluten-free diet after being diagnosed with a gluten-sensitivity last year as part of routine blood tests conduct by Quest Diagnostics. Quest's blood tests showed that, while Pugh does not have full-blown celiac disease, he does have a sensitivity that could negatively impact his performance on the field.
    Those results prompted Pugh to ditch the gluten, which, Pugh says, has paid huge dividends.
    The main benefit, according to Pugh, is that he was able to gain a few pounds while dramatically reducing his overall body fat, something many football players struggle to accomplish. Pugh says that eating gluten-free has also increased his energy levels, and improved his training and recovery ability.
    For example, his weight lifting numbers has increased dramatically. He can now comfortably bench press 425 pounds, much better than his previous best.
    According to Pugh, the gluten-free diet has been the key to training heavily and feeling great.

    Celiac.com 06/21/2018 - Would you buy a house advertised as ‘gluten-free’? Yes, there really is such a house for sale. 
    It seems a Phoenix realtor Mike D’Elena is hoping that his trendy claim will catch the eye of a buyer hungry to avoid gluten, or, at least one with a sense of humor. D’Elena said he crafted the ads as a way to “be funny and to draw attention.” The idea, D’Elena said, is to “make it memorable.” 
    Though D’Elena’s marketing seeks to capitalizes on the gluten-free trend, he knows Celiac disease is a serious health issue for some people. “[W]e’re not here to offend anybody….this is just something we're just trying to do to draw attention and do what's best for our clients," he said. 
    Still, the signs seem to be working. D'elena had fielded six offers within a few days of listing the west Phoenix home.
    "Buying can sometimes be the most stressful thing you do in your entire life so why not have some fun with it," he said.

    Celiac.com 06/20/2018 - Currently, the only way to manage celiac disease is to eliminate gluten from the diet. That could be set to change as clinical trials begin in Australia for a new vaccine that aims to switch off the immune response to gluten. 
    The trials are set to begin at Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast Clinical Trials Centre. The vaccine is designed to allow people with celiac disease to consume gluten with no adverse effects. A successful vaccine could be the beginning of the end for the gluten-free diet as the only currently viable treatment for celiac disease. That could be a massive breakthrough for people with celiac disease.
    USC’s Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said trial participants would receive an injection of the vaccine twice a week for seven weeks. The trials will be conducted alongside gastroenterologist Dr. James Daveson, who called the vaccine “a very exciting potential new therapy that has been undergoing clinical trials for several years now.”
    Dr. Daveson said the investigational vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance to people with celiac disease.The trial is open to adults between the ages of 18 and 70 who have clinically diagnosed celiac disease, and have followed a strict gluten-free diet for at least 12 months.     Celiac.com 06/19/2018 - Could baking soda help reduce the inflammation and damage caused by autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease? Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University say that a daily dose of baking soda may in fact help reduce inflammation and damage caused by autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease.
    Those scientists recently gathered some of the first evidence to show that cheap, over-the-counter antacids can prompt the spleen to promote an anti-inflammatory environment that could be helpful in combating inflammatory disease.
    A type of cell called mesothelial cells line our body cavities, like the digestive tract. They have little fingers, called microvilli, that sense the environment, and warn the organs they cover that there is an invader and an immune response is needed.
    The team’s data shows that when rats or healthy people drink a solution of baking soda, the stomach makes more acid, which causes mesothelial cells on the outside of the spleen to tell the spleen to go easy on the immune response.  "It's most likely a hamburger not a bacterial infection," is basically the message, says Dr. Paul O'Connor, renal physiologist in the MCG Department of Physiology at Augusta University and the study's corresponding author.
    That message, which is transmitted with help from a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, seems to encourage the gut to shift against inflammation, say the scientists.
    In patients who drank water with baking soda for two weeks, immune cells called macrophages, shifted from primarily those that promote inflammation, called M1, to those that reduce it, called M2. "The shift from inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory profile is happening everywhere," O'Connor says. "We saw it in the kidneys, we saw it in the spleen, now we see it in the peripheral blood."
    O'Connor hopes drinking baking soda can one day produce similar results for people with autoimmune disease. "You are not really turning anything off or on, you are just pushing it toward one side by giving an anti-inflammatory stimulus," he says, in this case, away from harmful inflammation. "It's potentially a really safe way to treat inflammatory disease."
    The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
