Celiac.com 12/02/2020 - Most Worcestershire sauces are made with naturally gluten-free ingredients. However, many brands do not label their Worcestershire sauce as gluten-free. That's not necessarily a big deal, but some people like to play it safe.

These brands of Worcestershire sauce go the extra mile to make sure their sauces are labeled "Gluten-Free." That means that you can breath extra easy about serving them to people with celiac disease.

Lea & Perrins bottles are clearly marked as gluten-free, and the only allergen listed is fish: anchovies.

WARNING: Outside the USA, including in Canada and Europe, the ingredients in Lea & Perrins include malt vinegar, which contains barley and is not gluten-free.

Many brands of Worcestershire sauce are not labeled gluten-free, but are made without gluten ingredients, and list no allergens. A few brands are Bulldog, Heinz, and Kroger Worcestershire sauce, which contain no gluten ingredients, and which list no wheat or gluten as allergens.

Lea & Perrins "original recipe" uses malt vinegar, not distilled white vinegar, everywhere in the world EXCEPT the United States. It is not safe here in Canada. French's is safe here, but it can be hard to find. Look for it at Loblaws.

    Hellodee

I contacted the Heinz company and their sauce has soy sauce in it. It is NOT gluten free.

Not all soy sauce contains wheat. La Choy brand does not. Hellodee, I assume that you clarified with Heinz that they use a soy sauce recipe that does contain wheat.

My understanding is that in Asian culture there are basically two traditional formulations for soy sauce. One contains wheat and the other does not. Most of what we see in western countries contains wheat.

Not all soy sauces contain wheat, and the one used in Heintz Worcestershire sauce does not include wheat, and per our article, does not contain any gluten. Here are the ingredients:

    Ingredients :

    DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR,WATER ,MOLASSES ,HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP,SALT,SOY SAUCE(WATER,SALT,HYDROLYZED SOY PROTEIN,CORN SYRUP,CARAMEL COLORING)NATURAL FLAVORINGS,CARAMEL COLORING,ANCHOVIES,POLYSORBATE 80,SOY FLOUR,GARLIC EXTRACT.

I have a recipe that includes1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce…..it serves at least 6 people…..would 1 serving of that do harm to a person with celiac disease?

I will assume you are in a country where malt vinegar may be used, so technically no, even though the gluten content in the end product would be very low.

Celiac.com 11/12/2020 - We get more than a few questions about ketchup. Specifically, is ketchup gluten-free, and safe for people with celiac disease? The answer is that most all ketchup is made with tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, sugar or corn syrup, salt, onion powder, spice, and natural flavors. All of these ingredients are naturally gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease. That means the products are likely safe for people with celiac disease.
However, many brands, like Hunt's and others, do not specifically label their ketchup as gluten-free. Like many products that are naturally gluten-free, many manufacturers don't bother to test their products and label them gluten-free.
