Celiac.com 12/17/2012 - On Friday, December 7th, 2012, KQED public radio hosted an hour-long program on celiac disease and gluten-sensitivity called: Going Gluten-free.

Photo: Courtesy of Stanford Hospital and Clinics. The program was part of the regular KQED program, Forum, and was hosted by veteran KQED personality Dave Iverson.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
KQED has the largest listener audience of any public radio station in the nation, so this presents a welcome opportunity to spread awareness of celiac disease, gluten-intolerance, and gluten-free issues to a wide audience.

KQED's tagline for the show was: If you're gluten-free, going to the grocery store used to mean spending hours reading labels to avoid anything with wheat, barley or other grains. But with the rising number of people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance, more stores and restaurants are offering gluten-free foods. We'll discuss the rise of gluten-free diets.

The guests for the one-hour program were:

    • Dr. Neilsen Fernandez-Becker, associate director of the Celiac Management Clinic at the Stanford School of Medicine
    • Jefferson Adams, writer at Celiac.com
    • Melinda Dennis, dietician and nutrition coordinator with the Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, sufferer from celiac disease, and co-author of "Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting and Thriving Gluten-Free"
    • Sadie Scheffer, owner and founder of Open Original Shared Link, which delivers gluten-free breads around San Francisco.

You can listen to an archive of the broadcast at Open Original Shared Link.

The category began with the $200 clue: There's an octet of veggies in this alphanumeric brand's vegetable juice, but no gluten. The answer, phrased in famous Jeopardy! question-form, is of course: What is V-8 Juice?
The next clue, for $500, was: This classic canned meat from Hormel that debuted in 1937 has no gluten. The correct answer: What is Spam?

Celiac.com 11/07/2012 - When it comes to whether or not mothers with celiac disease should breastfeed their children, there has been a fair amount of conflicting information in circulation. Some studies have found that breastfeeding renders a protective role when combined with a 'windowed' introduction of gluten, but others have shown no such protective effect. Furthermore, some researchers question the longevity of the protection offered. An international project called PREVENTCD seeks to boil down current information from a number of studies, in order to produce a primary prevention strategy for infants at risk of developing celiac disease.
The PREVENTCD project aims to answer the following questions:
Breastfeeding (BF) and celiac disease (Does any BF reduce the risk of developing...

Celiac.com 05/13/2014 - Overall, increased awareness of celiac disease and gluten intolerance has been a good thing, right?
Generally, more people are being diagnosed, and gluten-free food options are more numerous and more widely available than ever before.
However, all this awareness has succeeded in drawing a number of people into voluntary gluten-free dieting, often with mixed results.
Late night television host Jimmy Kimmel recently sent a camera crew out to a local exercise spot to ask people if they were following a gluten-free diet, and to find out if they actually knew what gluten was.
What he found was a bunch of supposedly gluten-free dieters, who were almost totally clueless about gluten, giving answers that would make most celiac patients cringe. He also got...
