When all Else Fails: These Solved My Health Problems!

Sometimes the celiac diagnosis isn't the whole answer.  I don't want to confuse new people; it does take some months to recover, but if recovery takes more than a year, although you sense movement; I would most certainly start looking for other possible problems contributing to your symptoms. I have been there and believe I have conquered.  Here is my list of great helps:

IGG/IgA sensitivity test:  This essentially helped me to be on the diet I use now as I stopped eating everything that I had antibodies to.  As I added foods back under the advice of my physician, I didn't feel the fatigue I expected that would indicate to me a problem.  I kept eating those foods until I realized I swelled more and more and gained 45 lbs! The diet didn’t include sweets or gluten!   It was then I realized I needed to go back to my strictest diet.

About that time I discovered the work of Izabella Wentz (thyroid pharmacist).  I took her course and discovered that viruses can trip celiac.  Finally, I realized I needed to address the Epstein-Barr virus that took up residence in me and likely tripped my celiac many decades before. I tried many treatments to build up and nourish my body, but I hadn’t ever done things to kill old viruses that are stubborn and elusive for the immune system.   I felt really sick when I tried to take supplements for that, so I looked for further help.


 I watched Izabella Wentz's "Thyroid Secret" and there I discovered that a person with similar symptoms (swelling, bloating, fatigue) that received helped from nutritionist Teri Cochrane in Reston, Virginia.  Teri became instrumental in helping me to feel better and I hope now I know what I need to know to stay there.  I highly recommend visiting with Teri if you are in difficulty or to maximize your health.


Teri Cochrane:  Teri accessed my genetics and informed me of my difficulties in breaking down protein, fats, sulfur foods (someone told me that here years back) and my own hormones!  Knowing this helped tremendously, no longer did my problems seem so mysterious.  Teri has a Wildetarian quiz online that may help you to access if you have any of these difficulties.  IF you are having trouble this quiz is free and helpful.  Teri Cochrane also wrote a book:  The Wildetarian Diet I highly recommend it if you wish to try using the diet.  She has recipes and gets very practical.  In my visit with her Teri also confirmed that Epstein-Barr virus triggered celiac and still wreaked havoc in me.  Also, she discovered another virus (C virus) I don't know how to spell it.


Wild Diet:  The diet Teri put me on came from information derived using my 23andme test.  My diet contains proteins such as bison, duck eggs, elk, wild caught fish and duck.  My vegetables include lettuce, sweet potatoes, olives, seaweed and peppers.  My fruits are mostly cherries and berries.  I also eat sunflower and pumpkin seeds, pecans and hazelnuts.  I use Wild rice.  I had tried a similar diet with the food sensitivity tests, so I am reasonably confident the diet is helpful 


Energy treatments:  I used NAET and Biofeedback to help get rid of my Epstein-Barr and also had treatments for tick-borne diseases and food allergies.  I used this concurrently with diet and supplements, so it is difficult to always say just what worked.  At this point, I don’t care as long as I have energy. I feel the energy treatments caused extreme and long detox responses followed by great improvements in my health and energy levels. 


Chiropractic:  I did regular back adjustments that seemed to be more and more helpful with other improvements.  Recently, we discovered my vagus nerve had been attacked by the virus and my chiropractor had an effective treatment to help it.  This further improved my digestion and general health.  Not to mention that my chiropractor first mentioned my gluten problem and kept me alive with her supplements when I was at my worse.


After living most of 35+ years in foggy fatigue, my energy is back up and I feel like a whole person.  My diet is satisfying and nourishing.  My weight is down to a normal level.  After all this work, I need to say that with the Creator, Jesus's miracle in my health.  I would not be here today.  Teri Cochrane said that my body was designed to heal; I believe it!

I am glad to to hear you are doing much better.

Try taking some Magnesium Glycinate to with meals to see if your energy levels don't continue to improve.

I use to take it with meals and at bed time but only need it twice a day now to help energy and fatigue etc.

It (Magnesium) really turned a corner for me on my fatigue, muscle cramps and sleep problems.

Thanks so much, Posterboy.  Magnesium Bi-Glycinate, I take it at bedtime.  Yes, it is very good.  I also bath in Magnesium salts when I can.  Magnesium (when I first began to take it) eased some shakes I thought were normal!  I had them as long as I could remember and three days after beginning the magnesium; they were gone!

"I will restore unto you the years which the locusts have eaten."  This verse gave me courage years ago.

      I was on very low carb diet late summer early Fall into winter.  At Christmas I came off and ate Christmas sweets, cookies, etc, etc... so good. By New Years I began with severe diarrhea with urgency.  Extremely fatigued, my physician started me on doxycycline, no help, put on lomotil, motofen- no help. Then started questran.  No help. Used verbizi, bentyl.  Not much better.  Had egd and bx showed villous atrophy.  But the antibody lab test for celiac was negative.  The dq2 and dq8 genetic testing showed dq2 positive, but dq8 negative. I also had microscopic colitis in the sigmoid at the same time. All other lab work was WNL.  No physician with straight up tell me yes “definitely “ celiac.  I don’t understand why the gluten antibody test was negative, when the biopsy pointed to it.  I’m so confused and wishing the doctors would say yes this is what it is, and if you follow diet, all will be fine.  I’ve been gluten free 4 weeks now.  Feel better, no real diarrhea like before, but would like to get definite answer.  My family has some immunological diseases such as lupus, RA, diabetes, but no celiac.  Anyone else have contradictory findings?

      If I only knew I had celiac disease long before I was finally diagnosed.  Now suffering celiac spru, gastroparesis and severe pancreatic insufficiency, I will never regain the full use of my pancreas.

      I am in the process of learning if the celiac or Lyme Disease was the biggest culprit in damage to my Pancreas.  I'll keep you posted if anyone wants to know.   My sons have been dianosed with Lyme and with the information on this site I've learned my youngest (16) may also have celiac disease.  Why it's taken his whole life for doctors to get it right I will never know but we're here now and gluten free looks to be in his future too.

      The article here relating celiac with pancreas issues is very interesting to me and is something I must look into for my son's welfare.  Thanks for information about what to look for in juvenile's!

    • Some celiacs are seronegative.  Some celiacs never test positive to the screening TTG.  Did you received the complete celiac panel (TTG, EMA and DGP)?  I test positive to only the DGP IgA even in follow-up testing.   Many things can cause villi damage: https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/what-else-can-cause-damage-to-the-small-intestine-other-than-celiac-disease/ However, you probably have celiac disease because you have the genes and you are already improving on the gluten free diet.  Remain gluten free for a year and get retested.  Your doctor may then give you a firm diagnosis.  But you might find that feeling better is all the assurance you need.   Hey, I am the only diagnosed celiac in my family and they are riddled with autoimmune disorders like RA, Lupus, Crohn’s, Thyroiditis, etc.  
    • Eab12, This is a blog post. . . .you might not get much response here. You might want to start this as a thread in the forum section. Eating low carb .. .might of been low enough in gluten to lower your antibodies levels but enough to still attack your villi. . ... and villi don't heal right way anyway. Most people follow up on biopsy at a year to see if villi are still damaged ... and your's obviously still are. .... one confirms the other (often) and doctor's don't want to say absolutely you have celiac without them both being positive. But for you I would say "Positive" is positive. .. but doctor's want both of them to be positive to be sure of your diagnosis. . . but for me I was diagnosed by blood serology only.... this is more common (today) than it i used to be. If either is positive then you can be positive for celiac disease ...doctor's are trying to confirm it is not a "false" positive.     • I once assumed this, sort of had the enzyme issues before the blood sugar issues. Thinking it might be more along the lines of what cycling lady said. Another thing to consider is that the genes for diabetes and celiac are often linked or share common ones. As the years have shown on this forum Diabetes and Celiac go hand in hand very often.

      If it attacked and destroyed his pancreas completely, he would not be able to eat tough foods, he would always have food undigested in his stool, vomiting would be daily, hard foods would be noticeable in vomit and stool along with floating oil from fatty foods. In my opinion and what I learned is meats were the worst with these and animal fats were VERY hard to break down. I have to take supplemental enzymes, with each meal, some from porcine (pig) pancreas along with supplemental ones in ratio to what I eat. I also have to blend my food to make it easier to digest and be careful limiting animal based fats, and going with soft super cooked ones so they are easy to break down.

    • Did your doctor test you for celiac disease before advising a gluten free diet?  Celiac disease can be asymptomatic and it is commonly linked to Hashimoto’s and/or Type 1 Diabetes (same genes — just a “heads up”).  If clear of celiac disease the diet might be helpful, or consider the autoimmune Paleo diet which is also gluten free.  Scripps in San Diego did a study on Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis patients.  Small study but they achieved a 78% remission.  They are now testing Hashimoto’s patients. The gluten-free diet did eliminate my nodules and enlarged thyroid, but I still must take thyroid hormone replacement (have had Hashimoto’s for 20 years).  Not sure if it was the diet or because I treated my celiac disease.  Calm down one autoimmune disorder and the others calm down.  That is one of my theories.  Be on the look out for autoimmune gastritis as it is also linked to Hashimoto’s and I have that too.   So, please consider going back on gluten, get tested and then treat your Hashimoto’s with a diet.
