Celiac.com 11/24/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about ham.

Specifically, is Costco ham gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
The answer is yes. Costco sells several hams that are labelled gluten-free. Ham is generally safe for people with celiac disease. As long as nothing containing gluten is added to the ham during or after processing, and if this is the case, then the ham will be gluten-free.

Costco Kirkland Signature Spiral Sliced Ham with Natural Juices is hickory smoked, fully cooked, pre-sliced, and it is labeled gluten-free, and so it is safe for people with celiac disease. A glance at the Costco website and the label will confirm that.

Costco also sells Noel Jamon Serrano Bone-In Ham Leg, that is aged 12 months, includes a stand and knife, and is labeled gluten-free.

Generally speaking, many types of ham will be gluten-free and safe for celiacs, but be sure to read the labels carefully. It's important that people with celiac disease make sure to avoid any gluten ingredients, so be sure to read labels and double check ingredients, to be safe.

    Happy Holidays!

I recently purchased a Costco spiral ham here in Canada (honey glazed). Last year it was marked gluten free and this year it’s not! I saw a comment on Celiac.com from October 2023 discussing the ham and it mentions its marked gluten-free? Maybe now just in the U.S. and not Canada!

We'll try to find out more info, perhaps a change was made. If possible, please take a photo next time you are there of the ingredients. Did you notice any gluten-containing ingredients in the ham?

PS - The link to it on their site still says "Gluten-Free" on the label...at least in the USA.

Scott I have the ham in my freezer and there is no longer a gluten-free statement as there used to be on the front of the pkg. when I called the toll free number the fellow said if there is no gluten-free claim on the pkg then it’s not. I said there is no “may contain “ statement and the ingredients look fine. He really want helpful. I have a pic of ingredients but sorry I don’t know how to post a pic of it here!

Usually you can select the image and do a control-C to copy it, then put your cursor in the box and do a control-v to paste it.

It sounds like they are giving you a blanket cover your butt statement, and the ham could be naturally gluten-free, but I can't say for sure, obviously. I hate it when this happens!

Scott: The ingredients are Ham, Pork, Water, sugars (brown sugar), honey powder (refined sugar and honey), spices, salt, modified vinegar, sodium phosphates, sodium erythorbaye, sodium nitrate, smoke. The glaze is sugars (brown) honey powder, spices. Wonder if the U.S. one has same ingredients!!!

The spices can sometimes be a source of gluten cross contamination.

Costco is good about returns...unfortunately I can't see the USA ingredients on their Web site.

This article may be helpful, but again, it is for the USA:

These articles are from 2021.  I have eaten Cure 81 ham for years and no problems.  I looked up articles for 2014 gluten free hams and it says they are as does the pkg (I am in US).  This is not the only product that I could eat that all of a sudden makes me ill.  So frustrating.  I have been doing this for 14 years now and have my go to foods.  So disappointed!

The articles are still fairly recent, but as the articles mention, be sure to check the label carefully before buying any foods, including hams.

    Which Turkey Brands are Gluten-Free?
Celiac.com 11/18/2020 - We get more than a few questions about holiday turkeys. One question we get a lot this time of year is: Which turkey brands are gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease? The good news is that, except for gluten added after processing, turkey meat is naturally gluten-free, including turkey fed with wheat or gluten-containing grains.
However, as with so many foods that start out gluten-free, the deeper answer lies in the extras. Unless you add wheat or gluten ingredients afterward, most turkeys and turkey meat is gluten-free. However, many of the commercial turkeys include seasoning packets or gravy packets that may contain wheat or gluten.
These brands of whole turkeys and turkey products are labeled "Gluten Free."
