Warning - Tmi Poop Question Ahead

Sorry for handing out too much information here, but I really don't know who else to ask on this one.  I'm recovering from my last glutening, which was about 4 weeks ago.  One thing I've noticed late in my recovery cycle is that my stools get really crazy.  The first week after being glutened I get the usual "Big D."  Then the next week or two they're normal.  Then about week 4 or 5 they become really strange.  They feel solid when they're inside me, but when I go to the bathroom, they totally fall apart in the toilet.  It's not watery, like diahrehea (sp?),  but comes out solid then separates into thousands of tiny pieces. Sometimes some mucus will come out too. I also noticed that when I have these kind of BMs, I have the sudden urge to go to the bathroom and I can't control it, like with a normal BM. 

 

So, if anyone hasn't gotten totally grossed out by my post yet and is still reading, here are my questions:

 

Does anyone else have this issue?

 

Is this a normal part of my intestines recovering from gluten or do I need to look to another food intolerance as a cause?  I've been gluten-free for 2 years.  I'm only doing gluten-free at the moment, but probably need to get rid of the dairy too as I have really bad sinus problems.  Could casein be a cause?

 

Do you think this is something I should go see the doctor for?  I had such a bad experience when I went to the gastro doctor that I hesitate to go again.  But if I need to visit a gastro dr., I can do some looking around and find a better one, I guess.

 

Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.  And sorry if I grossed anyone out :unsure:

I have had that problem and I think mine was caused from Lactose. No worries about TMI we have all been there. Very frustrating!

I am new to this whole thing as I've just been diagnosed but I definitely have the myriad of stool qualities that you describe and the scattered little bits seem to be the most disturbing to me too! I removed dairy from my diet and it has improved. Whenever I get it it's usually after I accidentally consume dairy.

You have your answer!  Give up the milk for a while.  Sounds more like a milk allergy (sinus congestion), but can be lactose at the same time!  It could be other foods too, but start with most obvious -- milk.

Thanks for the help everyone.  And for not being scared off by my post :P Looks like I will be giving up the dairy.  I've known for a while that I should but I think I've been resisting because my favorite foods all have dairy - chocolate, yogurt, cheese, etc.  It's been much easier for me to give up the wheat than it will be to give up the dairy.  Oh well, I guess I'll have to find some new favorite foods.

I had the same issue as well.  I too had to give up dairy but I have fallen in love with Silk Almond unsweetened milk.  My "D" lasted for 5 months my new GI doc put me on Budesonide and my "D" stopped.  Are you taking any probiotics and digestive enzymes they usually will help.

I haven't been taking either probiotics or digestive enzymes.  I'd love to hear some recommendations on those too.

Digestive Enzymes I take Digest All Plant Enzyme I order them from http://www.swansonvitamins.com  they are gluten free as well.  I order alot of gluten free items from swanson vitamins epecially my baking needs like flour they have thousands for gluten free items very cheap.  I take Trubiotics they are also gluten free and I get them at WalMart.  I have also taken Culturelle from WalMart as well.  I am sure other people can recommend brands as well.  What works for one may not work for another.  But these work well on me.

I had that happen and found that it was pea protein that caused it for me. It is so confusing at first because I am sure that I had gluten or too much dairy or a stomach bug and never suspected much else.  Because I had to limit my diet so much it took me about four encounters to figure out it was the pea protein that is added to some gluten free products. Probiotics will probably help.

    Celiac.com 06/23/2018 - If you’re looking for a great gluten-free Mexican-style favorite that is sure to be a big hit at dinner or at your next potluck, try these green chili enchiladas with roasted cauliflower. The recipe calls for chicken, but they are just as delicious when made vegetarian using just the roasted cauliflower. Either way, these enchiladas will disappear fast. Roasted cauliflower gives these green chili chicken enchiladas a deep, smokey flavor that diners are sure to love.
    Ingredients:
    2 cans gluten-free green chili enchilada sauce (I use Hatch brand) 1 small head cauliflower, roasted and chopped 6 ounces chicken meat, browned ½ cup cotija cheese, crumbled ½ cup queso fresco, diced 1 medium onion, diced ⅓ cup green onions, minced ¼ cup radishes, sliced 1 tablespoon cooking oil 1 cup chopped cabbage, for serving ½ cup sliced cherry or grape tomatoes, for serving ¼ cup cilantro, chopped 1 dozen fresh corn tortillas  ⅔ cup oil, for softening tortillas 1 large avocado, cut into small chunks Note: For a tasty vegetarian version, just omit the chicken, double the roasted cauliflower, and prepare according to directions.
    Directions:
    Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a cast iron or ovenproof pan until hot.
    Add chicken and brown lightly on both sides. 
    Remove chicken to paper towels to cool.
     
    Cut cauliflower into small pieces and place in the oiled pan.
    Roast in oven at 350F until browned on both sides.
    Remove from the oven when tender. 
    Allow roasted cauliflower to cool.
    Chop cauliflower, or break into small pieces and set aside.
    Chop cooled chicken and set aside.
    Heat 1 inch of cooking oil in a small frying pan.
    When oil is hot, use a spatula to submerge a tortilla in the oil and leave only long enough to soften, about 10 seconds or so. 
    Remove soft tortilla to a paper towel and repeat with remaining tortillas.
    Pour enough enchilada sauce to coat the bottom of a large casserole pan.
    Dunk a tortilla into the sauce and cover both sides. Add more sauce as needed.
    Fill each tortilla with bits of chicken, cauliflower, onion, and queso fresco, and roll into shape.
    When pan is full of rolled enchiladas, top with remaining sauce.
    Cook at 350F until sauce bubbles.
    Remove and top with fresh cotija cheese and scallions.
    Serve with rice, beans, and cabbage, and garnish with avocado, cilantro, and sliced grape tomatoes.

    It seems a Phoenix realtor Mike D’Elena is hoping that his trendy claim will catch the eye of a buyer hungry to avoid gluten, or, at least one with a sense of humor. D’Elena said he crafted the ads as a way to “be funny and to draw attention.” The idea, D’Elena said, is to “make it memorable.” 
    Though D’Elena’s marketing seeks to capitalizes on the gluten-free trend, he knows Celiac disease is a serious health issue for some people. “[W]e’re not here to offend anybody….this is just something we're just trying to do to draw attention and do what's best for our clients," he said. 
    Still, the signs seem to be working. D'elena had fielded six offers within a few days of listing the west Phoenix home.
    "Buying can sometimes be the most stressful thing you do in your entire life so why not have some fun with it," he said.

    Celiac.com 06/20/2018 - Currently, the only way to manage celiac disease is to eliminate gluten from the diet. That could be set to change as clinical trials begin in Australia for a new vaccine that aims to switch off the immune response to gluten. 
    The trials are set to begin at Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast Clinical Trials Centre. The vaccine is designed to allow people with celiac disease to consume gluten with no adverse effects. A successful vaccine could be the beginning of the end for the gluten-free diet as the only currently viable treatment for celiac disease. That could be a massive breakthrough for people with celiac disease.
    USC’s Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said trial participants would receive an injection of the vaccine twice a week for seven weeks. The trials will be conducted alongside gastroenterologist Dr. James Daveson, who called the vaccine “a very exciting potential new therapy that has been undergoing clinical trials for several years now.”
    Dr. Daveson said the investigational vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance to people with celiac disease.The trial is open to adults between the ages of 18 and 70 who have clinically diagnosed celiac disease, and have followed a strict gluten-free diet for at least 12 months.     • For the brown rice, it could be the fiber (assuming you mean whole grain rice, which still has husk on it). If I have been glutened recently, whole grain brown rice and other fibrous foods are not digested well by my GI tract. Because I get non-GI symptoms, I am quite sure that the cause is not gluten. You might stay away from whole grain rice for a bit, or transition slowly (mix white/whole grain in increasing proportions as tolerated). For pork, it is unlikely that the type of feed would have an influence on the gluten content of the meat. Gluten is not transferred into the muscle (meat) or eggs of animals. It stays in the GI tract. There could be some small chance of contamination from the GI tract during butchering. I don't know much about commercial butchering/abattoirs, but I think that this is heavily guarded against due to the risk of fecal contamination. Sometimes, the thing we think is making is sick is in fact not - sometimes it is something else that we do in association with that food. Perhaps there is a seasoning that you use with pork, or perhaps you use certain kitchen tools for pork that are contaminated. I used to always get sick when I cooked butternut squash. It was because I was using a hacksaw to cut them, which was contaminated with drywall (drywall contains wheat). If you are buying your meat from a small, independent butcher (where they bread/flour meat in-store), you might think about switching to buying big box grocery meat. At big box grocery stores, they just section up the meat that is pre-butchered. You could also be allergic to pork - this is rare, but some people are (especially those who are allergic to cats). Hope this helps.  
    • What pigs eat would note really get to your eating their meat, this might be different with something that you can not clean out well or eat part of the digestive tract like farmed crayfish, shrimp, or poorly cleaned fish/chicken. But pork...unless your eating part of the intestines the meat should not bother you if they ate even pure wheat.

      Brown rice, this could be a issues with CC, starches, fiber etc.  There have been major CC issues with grains and legumes in recent months. I suggest sticking to a safer brand like Lundenburg and or visually sorting your rice, and washing it before cooking it. Again it could also be a fiber issues or starches.

      Other thoughts some people bit by a lone star tick develop allergies to pork and or beef.

      Some people are just intolerant to certain foods, and we can develop many food sensitivities to just about anything with this disease.     • Brown Rice and pork are meant to be gluten free yet they set me off. Pork I reckon is due to them eating cereals.  Brown rice I have no idea although white is fine . Does anyone else get set off by them or is my body just strange?
    • I live in a town with hy-vee grocery stores. If you go to their website https://www.hy-vee.com/meal-solutions/special-diets/default.aspx and click on the gluten free foods link you will find every hy-vee product that is gluten free. I have had many and have never had a problem.  This list is for Hy-Vee products so it will not include other companies. I seem to survive off a lot of PB and J sandwiches when traveling. 
    • Hi Mavis, Celiacs are often low on Vitamin D, vitamin B-12, and sometimes iron, and selenium. Wheat is pretty popular here too.  But there are other options like rice and buckwheat, quinoa, etc.
