Dd Huge Increase In Appetite

Recommended Posts

We are newbies, with my 7yo DD being blood test positive and biopsy negative.

She has been gluten-free for about a week and we have really started to notice some great changes.  Constipation is clearing up, gas and gas pains are way down and her bloated belly is starting to look normal.  She also has almost no more complaints of pain, esp with eating.

As a side note, the last two days, she has had a VORACIOUS appetite.  She has always been average appetite with no eating when she is in pain.  She is not underweight at all.

Just wondering if other have increases in appetite when they go gluten-free?  If so...how long should we expect it to last?  Last night I finally had to cut her off after two dinner, dessert and a snack!

Thanks

That's great news!  She's probably deficient in many things (your doctor should check or put her on "standard" dosages of gummy vitamins/minerals), so I'd let her eat lots of healthy food choices.  Kids aren't hungry really, if they just want dessert.  I'm glad she's feeling better!

I agree! Appetite changes in people as they heal. Mine increased initially (with no weight gain) and it has decreased significantly now.

The most common nutrients to look into (that celiac disease affects) are calcium magnesium, iron, ferritin, zinc, copper, potassium, A, D, B's (mainly B12).

Best wishes.  :)

That's fantastic that your DD is feeling better. I am a newbie too and have been gluten free for 3 1/2 weeks now. My experience was that I was painfully and uncomfortably hungry during my second week gluten free. I just couldn't eat enough to feel full. I even had to get up in the middle of the night and have a bowl of cereal every night just to make the hunger pains go away so I could sleep. Luckily the extreme hunger went away during week three. I still am a little hungrier than usual, but it is so much better than it was week two. Hopefully this phase won't last too long for your DD. Best of luck!

Hi There, I posted earlier that my excessive hunger went away during my third week gluten free, but unfortunately sine then it came back with a vengeance during my forth week and is still pretty constant. I'm not sure how your DD's appetite is since you posted, but I've looked in to it a bit on this forum and it seems like it can come and go for a while. In one post I read, the person wrote that it lasted for 9 months !
