Swollen Organs

Hi,

So I was diagnosed in 2003, have been extremely faithful to gluten-free diet, and along the way found that I couldn't tolerate dairy either. Two years ago I had a followup biopsy and was told my gut had "healed completely".

However, I never gained any weight. My BMI is 19, just above NIH "underweight" category.

Then, in December, I went to ER with fever, chills and extreme organ pain (mostly in the areas of the kidneys and liver/gall bladder). I'd been having mild organ swelling intermittently for years, and now it's suddenly become rather severe.

I had blood work, CT scan, ultrasound, and everything checked out fine. No heightened IG's either. Mild anemia. Doctor is saying there's a chance I was misdiagnosed with sprue (he's owning it, he was the guy who dx'ed me the first time) and I may have Crohn's instead. He's getting me the genetic test, which I didn't have the first time (diagnosed via biopsy).

I haven't been back to the ER, but I've got regular mild organ pain and sometimes have trouble swallowing or urinating.

After reading a couple of other posts, I've begun to avoid citrus and alcohol, and I'm focusing on drinking plenty of water. All of *seems* to help, but it's really hard to say. My naturopath has had me on an herbal tonic, too.

Has anyone else had similar problems? Anything that made it better?

Hi Graindamaged and Welcome to the Forum.

I'm glad your Doctor is doing some more testing.  Also, you may be Celiac and have an additional health issue.  Are you taking an anti-inflammatory?  There are also foods you can eat to fight inflammation.  Do a quick google and you'll find lists of foods.  Otherwise I think you just have to wait on testing.  Don't hold back any of your many symptoms from you Doctor.

Good luck to you.

Colleen

No anti inflammatory at this time, but now I'm considering it. But I like the food idea better. Seems like heavy meds can often just cause new problems. Not to mention mess with my moods. After spending most of my life depressed, there's really nothing I wouldn't do to avoid it now that I'm feeling better.

Thanks very much!

I have a friend that has Crohn's It's nothing to mess with. She has had multiple resections. She is now on Stilara <-- spelling. All I can say is if your test come back positive, then take care and do what the Dr's tell you to do. My friend was DX'd 30 years ago. Then she went 10 years with out any meds because she said they made her sick or gave her other problems. They finally told her if she didn't take care of herself and listen to them she was going to end out with a bag. She now gives herself shots and is doing Pretty good. With Crohn's you will always have issues. But my plea to you is to please listen to the Drs. and do what they say.

I do feel my gut is always swollen. Not always but like I went to a friends house and weighed myself, I weighed 157lbs then the next day we decided to go shopping so I went back there just for kicks ang grins weighed myself again 168.lbs It wasnt my clothing or shoes. I had her jump on the scale because she weighed herself the day before also. hers was the same. So everytime I go there I weigh myself. Sometimes I'm lighter sometimes 10 lbs or more heavier. within a couple of days. So I am retaining water or fluid .. I can tell because sometimes when I wake up my gut is huge! my face is swollen even the whites of my eyes are swollen. then other days. im not. my gut will be flat and my face is not swollen. weird! trying to figure this all out.

Oh, okay. The lower case "b" in boots in your first post didn't lead me in the direction of a proper name. I thought maybe it was a specialty apothecary for people with pedal diseases or something.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! There are other things that may cause elevated tTg-IgA levels, but in general a reaction to gluten is the culprit:

Hi @trents Just seen this - Boot's is a chain of pharmacies in the UK, originally founded in the 19th Century by a chap with the surname, Boot.  It's a household name here in the UK and if you say you are going to Boot's everyone knows you are off to the pharmacist! Cristiana

I am looking to find a Celiac Dietician who is affiliated with the Celiac Disease Foundation who I can set up an appointment with.  Can you possibly give some guidance on this?  Thank you!

Nacina, Knitty Kitty has given you good advice. But I would say/add find a Fat Soluble B-1 like Benfotiamine for best results.  The kind found in most Multivitamins have a very low absorption rate. This article shows how taking a Fat Soluble B-1 can effectively help absorption by 6x to7x times. https://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com/journal/thiamine-deficiency-and-diabetic-polyneuropathy quoting from the article.... "The group ingesting benfotiamine had maximum plasma thiamine levels that were 6.7 times higher than the group ingesting thiamine mononitrate.32" Also, frequency is much more important than amount when it comes to B-Vitamin. These are best taken with meals because they provide the fat for better absorption. You will know your B-Vitamin is working properly when your urine becomes bright yellow all the time. This may take two or three months to achieve this.......maybe even longer depending on how low he/you are. The Yellow color is from excess Riboflavin bypassing the Kidneys....... Don't stop them until when 2x a day with meals they start producing a bright yellow urine with in 2 or 3 hours after the ingesting the B-Complex...... You will be able to see the color of your urine change as the hours go by and bounce back up after you take them in the evening. When this happens quickly......you are now bypassing all the Riboflavin that is in the supplement. The body won't absorb more than it needs! This can be taken as a "proxy" for your other B-Vitamin levels (if taken a B-Complex) ...... at least at a quick and dirty level......this will only be so for the B-1 Thiamine levels if you are taking the Fat Soluble forms with the Magnesium as Knitty Kitty mentioned. Magnesium is a Co-Factor is a Co-factor for both Thiamine and Vitamin D and your sons levels won't improve unless he also takes Magnesium with his Thiamine and B-Complex. You will notice his energy levels really pick up.  His sleeping will improve and his muscle cramps will get better from the Magnesium! Here is nice blog post that can help you Thiamine and it's many benefits. I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice God speed on your son's continued journey I used to be him. There is hope! 2 Tim 2:7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included. Posterboy by the grace of God,
