Trying To Gain Weight

Recommended Posts

I've reached my one year mark for celiac. My latest blood work shows no detectable antibodies, and I got a "Congrats" from the dr. for adhering to diet.  I'm still having an issue trying to gain weight.  I'm eating and tracking my daily intake, but just don't seem to be able to gain.  The dr. wasn't too concerned because I've remained weight stable for the past 4-5 months.  Does the inability to gain mean that I haven't healed inside yet?  How long should it take to gain weight?  I feel like all I do is eat.  I feel much better, but still not great - good and bad days.  I really only stated having symptoms about six months before I was diagnosed. I attribute the good/bad days to SIBO, which I've been fighting for sometime with antibiotics.  I'm completely dairy free, very low carb and mostly sugar free (FodMap diet for SIBO).  Is it normal to take this long to gain weight?  I have always been slender, so losing 18 lbs. is a big loss for me.

It took me about 3 years to gain weight after going gluten-free. It sounds like your diet is fine, but you may want to check to make sure you are getting enough calories, and consider having your doctor screen you for any possible thyroid issues. Here are some helpful links on this topic:
