How To Convince My Mom I Need To Be Strictly Gluten Free

Hi, some of you must know my story, i'm not diagnosed with celiac disase because i started the gluten free diet some months before being tested.

I dont doubt i have gluten issues, i've tried to reintroduce it like 3 or 4 times this year, in all the attempts i ended with severe diahrrea (15-20 times a day, bright blood, pain..) but here's the problem: my mom thinks that cross contamination is exagerated because i tested negative and it's not necessary for me to follow a strict gluten free diet.

She said she is not against me, she thinks she supports me!, some days ago she told me she agrees i have some sort of gluten problem but then told me that when i get symptoms of cross contamination i's probably my head! and i feel so bad because she doesnt really support me! I know she thinks i'm crazy because im following a strict diet without a diagnosis, and she gets angry when i ask het to be more careful when cooking for me, because "i dont have any disease"

I cant really cook all my food because she doesnt give me any money. I've been trying to wash all the dishes, because sometimes she just rinses everything and they eat gluten all the time, and i know rinsing is not enough.

She also takes some snaks while cooking and then touches the food with her gluten hands.

The good news is that i at least got her to buy and use all certified gluten free stuff, and every time she cooks for me (and for everyone) , she uses my special brands.

So my question is, how can i get my mom to understand cross contamination is bad for me even if im not diagnosed with celiac disease? Can you give me some ideas?

I'm still trying to get a diagnosis, next step is taking the biopsy to other hospital and get it analyzed again.

Everything's difficult here where i live, because doctors dont even believe in gluten sensitivity!

If you don't have a job - why not do all the cooking?

Kareng thats a good idea!! i must definitely try that, i just dont know how to tell her. Its like she's called me crazy and stuff like that so many times that i now dont even wanna tell her anything about food or gluten! im kind of tired of evil comments, but if i dont do anything for myself, she wont either..

Tell her you appreciate her support - both financially and emotionally.  And you know you have some diet issues and you will do all the cooking and clean up from cooking.  You just want to pull your weight around the house.  Maybe offer to clean your bathroom every week or 2?

The fact is, we mom's like having our kids, even adult ones at home.  But we shouldn't have to do all the housework, cooking, etc.  WE also like to know we are appreciated.

Sadly, I am nearly 50 and still haven't convinced my mom that cross contamination is an issue. However, I've also been allergic to milk since I was a kid  (diagnosed), and she gave me dairy products anyway because she thought I needed the calcium. I'm pretty sure she thinks I need the wheat "because it's healthy." Fortunately, I don't live with my mom, so the issue only comes into play if I visit, and I've solved it by taking my own food.

I suggest you purchase a few cooking items and prepare your own meals. Ask if you can have a cupboard and a counter just for your food, dishes, and prep.

It's not that i dont help her at all, i think i cook and wash half of the times.. i mean thats not enough because she doesnt know how to cook without contaminating the food, and when i try to explain it to her, she gets angry.. I hope she will understand some day, now i feel im a burden here.

She doesnt have so much money, i dont want to ask her for all this expensive food (my dad and grandparents buy it all) but i cant deny i get sad when she comes home with a package of cookies for my sister and other for my brother and nothing for me.

My mom must be ashamed of me,im sure she thinks im a crazy hypocondriac with negative test results who thinks has celiac disease and doesnt.  i know most of my family (mom's side of the family) think im making it all up.

I can stay away from my mom's side of the family, they dont like me, i dont like them.. but i really dont want to get away from my mom.

I keep thinking all this is not fair.. sorry if im complaning too much!

I believe you, I do.  I hope this helps.  Nobody knows their own reactions like themselves, I say!  Hopefully, Mom will come around as she sees you improve.  Keep trying on getting the job, you know, stores and package carriers will be needing more help soon at least for a while.  IF you are a good worker they can give you a good reference or keep you on after the rush.  IF you get that job, a little electric plug in skillet and a spatula can cook many things quite quickly.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?
    • Aussienae
I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
