? About Rast And Reaction To Wheat

My 2 yr old has had reflux and possible FA's since birth

He has always been small..and for a long time now has been very lethargic, seems to be experiencing headaches, gas, stomach cramps etc

I kept a food diary and (since he was already dairy/soy free) and it seemed when he had wheat/pasta he was VERY grouchy and had constipation...tantrums etc

Our Gi ran general b/w and said and all came back fine..

Our ped is rec the RAST blood test ad I am wondering if it is worth taking him..does anyone know how a celiac would respond to the RAST blood test?

Also, he was doing well on a gluten-free diet but I think he may have had some wheat around 11:00am yesterday..he was FINE all day but this am woke up very cranky, lethargic..sad etc

Could this be a reaction to the Gluten he has yesterday am//just trying to figure all this out

I appreciate any feedback

Thanks, Kim

Was he tested for celiac disease while he was on the gluten free diet? Being on the gluten free diet can result in false negative results on tests.

Yes, a very small amount of gluten can trigger symptoms.

One thing to keep in mind, is the blood work is not accurate for a child under the age of 2yrs. Was he tested before or after he turned 2?

Also, my son, in all has had about umm.... 6 or more RAST tests... 3 of them came back pos for Milk, none of them came back pos for wheat. However, when he turned 2yrs... they did a skin test on him, that showed pos for wheat. And honestly, it's what led us to having further tests done for celiac (even tho the GI dismissed all positive findings!)

I'm not sure if that really answered your question.

As far as getting glutened.. The slightest bit effects Matthew horribly. With me running a child care here. I wash my hands and counters well more than 50 times a day.. I have the cracked hands to prove it! lol

But if he were to get one NGF bread crumb... we're in for days of heck.

I don't want to get icky here, but if there might be/has been a thrush issue, it could help explain things. Toxins from yeast can be so nasty. Add gluten intolerence and you got one heck of a bumpy ride.

No doctor ever properly diagnosed my problems. Your child is fortunate that you are already aware of certain issues, and have begun tracking down the cause.
