So last night I wasn't feeling all that great and ate pizza for the heck of it. I've been gluten free since February when I got diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Today, my throat feels like it's cutting off.  Has anyone else experienced this?

its not like smoking or dieting,  if you cheat with celiac, you get sick. sometimes very sick. If you have  pizza it better be a gluten free one otherwise you will suffer from the throat problem or in my case severe cramps.

Hi acountrygirl75,

Your throat closing could be an allergic reaction.  I suggest you get tested for allergies to wheat, and anything else on the pizza that might cause a reaction.  Allergies can be deadly and should not be treated lightly.

I am not sure why you ate pizza, as regular gluteny pizza is a big no-no for celiacs.  Your immune system doesn't need much gluten exposure to start a reaction.  The reactions can continue for weeks easily.  All that time it is doing damage to your body, even if you don't feel it or notice symptoms.

There is a newbie 101 thread in the coping with celiac section of the forum that might help you some.  It has some good information in it.  Doctors are sometimes somewhat lousy at sharing info about celiac disease and the gluten-free diet with their patients.   But we are glad to help with any questions you might have.

I have Celiac, and am also allergic to wheat. Before I knew this my throat did close up and it was very dangerous. I have an epi pen now, but am still very careful. It's important to go see your doc juts in case :)

I took some charcoal. It helped. When I got diagnosed, I wasn't sent to a dietitian or anything. Everything I've learned has been from books, this site, going to a Celiac event in Canada when I visited my sister and Google.

Hi arcountrygirl75,

If your pizza was gluten free, it's possible that cross-contamination was a factor. Another possibility is acid reflux. I've recently been experiencing discomfort that feels like I'm too full and my throat seems constricted, so my gastroenterologist performed another colonoscopy and an endoscopy. He discovered that my esophagus is damaged by acid, which can be a common condition with celiac. Tomato sauce will aggravate acid reflux. This might be a good time to visit a trusted gastroenterologist.
