Celiac vs. Teething

Hello, I am a mother of a awesome 1 year old son. He has not really been acting himself the best 2 months or so. I have noticed his poop is changing to a ceramic look but has form to it..also has a little mucous look to it. (Sorry for the lovely description haha) anywho... he has been pooping 3 to 4 times daily. Very irritable...and cries way more than he used to. My question is I'm trying to figure out if he is teething or is it something more to it? He Sid have reflux when he was a little guy so we gave him baby reflux med. And that def. Helped him out with the reflux but we took him off of it about 4 or 5 months ago because he was doing great without it. We changed him from alimentum formula to fairlife ultrafiltered milk. (Whole milk) ...and we thought could it be the milk...so we have changed him to l actaid to see how that helps. He is 27 pounds..and has a belly. I've noticed a lot of the celiac websites say the patients are small but distended belly...but my son is not small like that. I'm not sure what to do....i took him to two doctors one said take him off the juice and see how his poop changes...the other says he's teething and the other said she couldn't do anything bc it's a urgent care and there is nothing urgent Nd I'd have to go to my primary pediatrician. So should I take him to my primary and ask for a celiac test? I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks for your time and help!!?

Megan

When babies are teething they tend to drool more and will usually kind of chew on their hands, a blankie etc as the pressure helps to ease the discomfort.  Often they will have stool changes, get a bit more fussy and out of sorts. It hurts when those teeth are shoving their way through the gums.  You might even be able to feel them if you run your fingers along his gums. The changes you are seeing could quite well be related to the teething.  To be on the safe side you may want to take him to the ped just to make sure nothing else is going on.

Why do you suspect celiac? Does it run in your family? Are you celiac?  He does have to be eating gluten foods to have a positive reaction to the celiac panel. So if you are going to test for celiac make sure he is eating gluten daily.

I hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system
