Hey All,

I'm a 40 yo male who was just dx'd in September and weighted 153 lbs and 5'9".  I started working out lifting heavy and playing hockey 2x/week (+taking creatine as well) in July and tracking calories daily on MFP.  I have my calories set at about 300 calories over maintenance.  After the first 3 months of lifting I had got up to about 161 lbs but over the past two months I have not gained a lb and actually lost a couple when I checked the scale today.  ALso note that I don't eat meat and eat fish usually 3x week.  The past couple weeks I noticed my bowel movements are a bit less and kind of feel like they are not compleely empty when i'm done, sometime I have to push a bit to get the last bit out.  It's soft, somewhat formed but still a lumpy pile (sorry for this!).  Still once per day but sometimes I was going 3x per day.  I've also had some pressure and just kinda weired feeling in my guts that is uncomfortable.  My appetite is low but i still eat to get to my calorie goals for the program.  My concern is that I gained about 10 lbs and then the gain stalled out......I guess it just worries me a bit so i'm posting this rant.  why would i be able to gain weight then it just stop with no real change in calorie intake? This is what worries me I guess. I will note that I have been eating bobs red mill gluten free oats nightly since dx basically (1cup).

Don't muscles burn more calories?  Maybe you are using more calories than before you started working out and gaining muscle?

Try using pumpkin seed protein for recovery, BCAAs between meals, and sipping on a protein shake all day would help prevent muscle breakdown. I moved to a keto diet of fat and protein with very low carb and leads to a lean body build for my building. It requires me to constantly eat fat and protein or my body drops quick.  Pumpkin Seed protein is very high in zinc and trace minerals so it is great for muscle recovery. I recently turned to using a collagen blend with powdered coconut milk and binging on cocoa nibs to get in extra calories myself. I also use nut butters in my smoothies I eat all day. I personally use vegan protein blends. >.> I make keto breads made with coconut and egg whites to up my fats and protein, spread with seed/nut butters and avocado.

Hi there, according to weight gain is not an tough task you need to eat fatty foods.

While more fat in the diet is important for weight gain you also need the building blocks for your body that are in protein, the vitamins and minerals to utilize them found in leafy greens, nuts, seeds, supplements, and the enzymes to break them down. Celiac hampers the ability to break down and absorb nutrients so it can be a struggle finding the right balances and each person is different in the way they metabolize foods and absorb what nutrients often requiring supplementation of certain nutrients to benefit absorbing enough of them. My body burns fat for energy and build with protein and changes back and forth if I eat too much protein throwing me out of ketosis. But my gut can not handle carbs or sugars. Most other humans live and build their body with carbs as a primary fuel source and build up with fats and protein. Again each person is different and you sort of have to play with your diet to find the right ratios. Generally body building you have to take in extra nutrients that promote muscle/body recovery and building/utilization of proteins and fats and take supplements that "guide" your body to not break down muscles for foods but to build upon them by using ketones, BCAA, Protein powders, zinc, yoimebe etc in carefully moderated dosing. A dietician or nutritionist is best to consult here.
