Hydrolyzed wheat protein?

 Hi guys! 

I was wondering about reactions from hydrolyzed wheat protein Found in beauty products such as body wash, shampoos etc.

 I’m finding a lot of mixed messages online and wanted to find out how others react to it if at all.  I’m asking because I’ve been using a body wash for two months that had this ingredient in it. I haven’t felt well and was honestly just blaming my thyroid and other circumstantial issues going on in my life. However looking back at my use of it I was finding myself having a lot of brain fog and anxiety frequently.  At first I thought I was actually  eating gluten on accident. But I have been extra extra careful to not do so and I’m still not feeling any better. 

 Some sites have said as long as you’re not ingesting it no problem. But. I have another food sensitivity, sunflower seeds and oil. If I use lotion or any other beauty product with This in it I do have a reaction. I have a reaction rather quickly within 24 hours. It’s not an anaphylactic reaction but is a reaction that is almost identical to if I eat it. Therefore I don’t buy into Articles I claim this ingredient is safe for someone with celiac. Any thoughts?

Celiacs do not react to skin products that contain gluten unless they are being ingested.  I am referencing a very reputable celiac dietician who has quoted one of the world’s leading celiac researchers:

If  you are reacting, you might have a wheat allergy (mild or severe) in addition to celiac disease or you could be reacting to other ingredients.   You could also be developing another illness or autoimmune disorder.  

While celiac disease can go into remission with the gluten free diet, there is really no controlling other autoimmune disorders like your thyroid.  Consider having it rechecked.  I hope you figure it out!

Oh I already know of another autoimmune disorder. Graves’ disease is what I have and my last blood work was a few weeks ago. It’s on the edge of being under control. Perhaps it IS wheat.

Oh and I guess I’m just wondering if others have reacted or have suspected reactions. I’ve already read that article. Some articles say no it can’t cause a reaction and others say it can. I just want to know personal experiences.

Running hyper can cause fatigue and anxiety for sure!  The thyroid can also impact you in different ways.  For example, my allergist thought my bout of chronic hives (daily for six months) was related to my Hashimoto’s which has been known to swing from hyper to hypo within days (I was a mess when that happened and it drove my doctor crazy!)  was it related to celiac disease?  No one knows.  

I would put my money on Grave’s (my mom has it) and not wheat in the body wash activating celiac disease.  Again, you CAN also have a concurrent wheat allergy.  Consider seeing an allergist for IgE testing.  

If you really think your celiac disease is active, get your antibodies rechecked.  

Please make sure you take your medications for Graves.  My mom’s Graves was not diagnosed for a long time (doctors blamed it in menopause).  As a result, she has permanent double vision.  Please also make sure your vision is being managed by an ophthalmologist who works with Graves patients.
