Had enough of being sick, what now

I've been feeling sick for the best part of a year now. It took nine months of various doctors appointments and tests to finally get diagnosed with Celiac disease at the end of January 2018. I've been off gluten since but I'm still feeling ill.

I have constant fatigued and exhaustion, too many trips to the toilet if you know what I mean, muscle pains, bloating stomach and feeling sick after eating. I feel like my brain doesn't work like it used to and I'm really struggling with my job and life in general.

I've been having 'reactions' to various foods, so I am now off diary, bananas (awful reactions) and now potatoes. The only thing that doesn't seem to upset me so far that I can tell is spinach and broccoli! But eating or drinking too much of anything seems to make me suffer.

I've been referred to a gastro specialist by by doctor, but everything takes too long. It turns out that my next appointment is only a 10 min consultation which I fear is just going to be me repeating myself again and lead to further waits and maybe more tests. 

I am becoming greatly depressed and starting to think whats the point, I am getting nowhere and I don't know how much longer I can cope with feeling this ill all the time. I've had too much time of work and my performance at work is bad. I'm contemplating leaving my job, maybe renting my house out or selling it so I can move back in with my parents (I'm 35!) so I can try to recover.

Can I speed my recovery up? Are there certain tests that I should request (or demand) now? From what I have read, I feel that I might be deficient in certain vitamins etc. I've been taking a multi vitamin, but that isn't really helping.

I know people on here have suffered for longer than I have and that it will take time for my stomach to heal but I've run out of patience. I need results soon or I'm going to have to drastically change my life.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This disease can only be treated by diet....and it can take time. IF you mess up, eat out and get glutened, do not stick to the diet, get contaminated etc....your going to take much longer to feel better. Quickest way to heal, whole foods only diet, remove dairy and oats, and you can help symtoms by supplementing. The various symtoms are often compounded by the fact your not absorbing the nutrients from your food and certain ones at that. Supplementing Magneisum, B-vitamins, Viatamin D, and sometime iron and others are a big help. Many find iron rich foods work for the iron and just need a vitamin C supplement to absorb it. B-vitamin complex like Liquid Health Stress & Energy and Liquid Health Neurological Support helps with the fog taking 1 tbsp each 3 times a day works for me. Since you have D you might try Magneisum Glycinate to help with the muscle issues Doctors Best in the powdered form is best here just dose how they say once or twice a day. Vitamin D3 helps Liquid Health has it in liquid form also.
Please read up on the newbie 101 thread.....that is sort of a huge learning curve and decon phase for cleaning out your kitchen to prevent contamination ..takes less then a crumb to raise the antibodies and start the damage all over again, so getting rid of glutened contidment jars, scratched cook ware, old toasters and colanders is a must.
4-6 month frame on a pure gluten free diet you should start noticing a improvement. After a year or so most are almost back to a normal life or a new normal.
PS a dedicated gluten free home is GREAT moving back in with your parents a gluten home....trust me much harder.

Welcome to the forum markb,

Ennis has it right.  It is easiest to heal if you stick to a simple diet or mostly whole foods that you cook yourself.  Some people find that dairy cause them problems for several months and some have problems with oats also.  So to speed things up you can eliminate those foods from your diet for a while also.  I see you are off dairy already so that's good.

Potatoes are in the nightshade family along with tomatoes, peppers and eggplant.  So if potatoes are bothering you it might be helpful to eliminate the other nightshades for a while too.  Another food that causes lots of people problems is soy.  But if you are eating whole foods you probably won't eat any hidden soy.

All of these added food intolerances may fade away in time, some may be permanent though.  Think of your gut as being inflamed and sensitive for now.  You want to treat it gently for a while so it can heal up.  Processed foods are not helpful for gut healing.

Mission corn tortillas are a cheap sub for bread if you need one.

I agree with Ennis too. I experienced withdrawal symptoms for a while and even then I didn’t recover for quite a while. Eating foods that harm the gut takes its toll on the whole body and, you will not have been absorbing nutrients from your food once you do start to absorb them again, it’s going to take a while to replenish your ‘stocks’ of vitamins and minerals. Stick to a wholesome diet and don’t eat out or have take outs until you have your diet in control and even then, you need to exercise caution.  If after doing this for a while you still feel no better you might want to consider a food diary to detect any foods you may have become intolerant to. I have become intolerant to soy, legumes, and quinoa, and a few other things - this developed a year or so after going gluten free though, not straight away, and I was intolerant to all dairy before being diagnosed, which hasn’t changed since.

Im sorry you are still feeling unwell. It Might be a good idea to check for hidden gluten. 

If you are sensitive you may well be reacting to under the 20ppm allowed in supposedly gluten free products. I personally they should be labelled low gluten.

 

Your shampoo, soap, lip balm, shaving cream all need to be gluten free. Some will get in your mouth, or hands then mouth. Toothpaste etc.

If you arent recovering then take a closer look. Unfortunately it might not be so easy for you as just buying gluten free goods. 

I cant tolerate gluten-free oats, quinoa, whiskey, and react to 10ppm.

      The ulcers are prepyloric ulcers. Not sure if that makes any difference.

      I had what was termed "lesions," and normally ulcers are in the stomach, rather than the small intestines. I'm not sure why they would want you to have her continue to eat gluten, since she had a positive blood test, but as her doctor said, if she is uncomfortable and having symptoms why not have her go gluten-free at this point? If her symptoms improve, it would be another indicator that she has celiac disease and/or gluten sensitivity. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
