Quinoa

I ate some gluten free quinoa, and boy am I sick! No dh reaction, but my stomach is acting like ive had a bad glutening, and totally knocked me out. The brand is certified gluten free, but is it possible quinoa is a no go? I cant eat gluten free oats either.

Im scared of my small amount of safe foods being reduced further! Ive never eaten quinoa before.

My sensitivity is very high to gluten, I simply cannot handle the 20ppm supposedly gluten free foods.

Im hoping its cross contamination, not another thing off the list.

Im reduced to eating only soft boiled veg, no onions, no tomato.

I find that I can eat a little bit of quinoa but a large amount seems to make my stomach hurt.  I think it may be the fiber.  Just my unscientific theory.

Thank you for the reply!

Ive classic glutening symptoms (for me) of diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and extreme fatigue. It was the only new thing I ate.

But no new dh lesions. So thats good!

What brand, there have been issues with some finding gluten grains in edisons grainery gluten free grains and lentils. If you buy dry food like those you should dump out on some butcher paper etc, sort the grains looking for anything not what it should be, wash in a grain colander well, then cook.

>.< I have Ulcerative Colitis and for the longest time had gut issues (Pain, bloating, distention, bloody stools) without the other gluten symptoms when I ate fruits or grains. Learned it was flaring to sugars and carbs. I had assumed it was bad gut bacteria for years.

It was pereg brand, with mushrooms.

I dont think I'll be trying quinoa again. Ive gone grain free for now, in an attempt to feel a bit better.

You poor thing! No sugar or carbs must be miserable.

At first yes, then I discovered grain free nut based breads and desserts, then as a bakery owner started making my own of many. Nut butters, seed butters, and baked goods made with nut and seeds are stables along with egg dishes and leafy green veggies. Found Miracle Noodle rice and noodles that are carb free. Sweeteners like Swerve, Pyure, stevia, Lakanto etc do not bother it, and I found extracts for all my desserts and fruits I can not eat so I can taste them in other dishes......And if I somehow get my pancreas to start working right (chiropractor suspects it can be improved with adjustments and some kind of therapy as he found my t7 nerve that effects not signally right) I can start eating on a meat based paleo/keto diet.  Maybe I have just fooled myself but I am quite happy with it....and it works wonders for lean muscular body build, and I no longer have bloat and energy galore (body burns fat/protein for energy not carbs).

Im so glad you are on the mend, and happy with your diet as you can be!

Celiac is such a bind. I eat clean certified foods and still get hit by Cross contamination and low level build up.

My only sugar is the occasional Square of chocolate, and lara bars a few times a week. Im currently living on veg soup, that I batch make, canned sardines, and avocados. Im miserable and tough to be around.

Moggy, sounds like you ate a prepared, processed, quinoa meal. I suspect cross contamination.

Having said that, some quinoa strains have been tested as having levels of gluten or gluten like proteins that may cause distress. I assume that a Co preparing gluten-free meals would know this and would use safe strains.

Best way to test this will be to cook raw, unprocessed quinoa and try it with a simple home cooked gluten-free meal. I cook quinoa regularly and enjoy it. It’s one of my safe foods.

Thank you both. I haven't had access to the test results but will get them and post here.

The ulcers are prepyloric ulcers. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Duodenal ulcers are not uncommon either and often result from H.Pylori infections. https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/duodenal-ulcer

I had what was termed "lesions," and normally ulcers are in the stomach, rather than the small intestines. I'm not sure why they would want you to have her continue to eat gluten, since she had a positive blood test, but as her doctor said, if she is uncomfortable and having symptoms why not have her go gluten-free at this point? If her symptoms improve, it would be another indicator that she has celiac disease and/or gluten sensitivity. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
