Testing Advice

Hi everyone- My daughter tested positive (IgA and tag IgA) in March while presenting with a subcutaneous manifestation of Lupus called Chilblains. Ugh- yes all at once. They were ordered by her Rheumatologist and shared with the Ped. GI.

She is 12 and she's 5'8 and 100 pounds. No symptoms like belly pain, etc but her diet was poor and anemia was very concerning. She has always been a very picky eater. Mac and Cheese was her go-to. So, now we are seeing a GI and he wants to run the same bloodwork. She has been gluten free since March 30. What would those of you with experience do with your child:

1- Start gluten again- her bloodwork is next week.

2. Stay gluten free and remind her doc of the gluten-free diet.

3. I have no other clue at this point.

Any help or advice would be a blessing. Thanks to all.

I'm sorry you didn't get a fast reply, normally we do better.

A formal diagnosis of celiac disease can only be made while someone is eating gluten, typically on a daily basis at least 2 months before testing. Only you know how badly it will affect her, and must decide whether or not it is worth it. The biggest issue for someone so young is whether or not they will continue their diet for life if they don't have a formal diagnosis.

Most doctors would likely recommend getting a formal diagnosis.

Thank you so much, everyone. For the moment my doctor just has me taking iron but hopefully we can reconnect soon. I'm going to look into genetic testing, too. Great advice all around and I appreciate it--and you can bet I'm going off the PPIs!

I walk fast for fitness, 4 to 6 km per day. I am also 74 years old. Apart from the Celiac challenge, my lifestyle is healthy. I had a sciatiac nerve pinching under my one foot, with inflamation in my whole shin. It was almost cured, when the other shin started paining and burning. I do stretches, use a natural cooling gel and rest my feet. Can Celiac cause muscle pains/inflamation, or is it just over-excercising?

I recently started shopping at a nearby Trader Joe's store. I was surprised at the number and variety of (healthy) gluten-free options sold there. I must admit their low prices are also quite tempting. However, I am curious as to the labeling on all their packages. While none of their products are certified as gluten-free, many are identified as 'GLUTEN FREE' on the packaging. Are these items safe for celiacs? Has anyone tried Trader Joe's products and have there been any adverse reactions?

HI, my doctor suggested one week of consuming gluten before blood tests.  I have been gluten free for 3 years.  Has anyone been through this and will I get exact results after one week of consuming gluten?  I don't even know if I can do this, if I get sick I am not sure if I can continue, any suggestions??  Thanks in advance.
