Possible celiac?

Hi, after a long 3 weeks of 2 doctors visits and queried kidney infection, I think I may have found the culprit for my issues.

Terrible bloating, tummy pain, spasm like pain (sponge squeezed) and an episode of these resulting in a and e check, to which bloods etc all fine. stools strange and a bit smelly (apologies tmi) I avoided breads this week and bought couple gluten free bits from shop and just tried a wrap for lunch from shop and symptoms starting again 😣

Where do I go from here? Just want to feel right again 😣

Thanks 🙏

Welcome to the forum, Angie Pie!

"an a and e" check? What is that?

"bloods etc all fine" Have you had testing done that is specifically for celiac disease? There are serum antibody tests specifically designed to check for celiac disease.

I would ask for three tests:

1. Total serum IGA

2. tTG-IGA

3. Deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP IgA and IgG)

You need to be eating gluten daily (2 slices of wheat bread or the equivalent) for 6-8 weeks leading up to the test in order not to invalidate them.

And if your physician wants to follow the antibody testing with an endoscopy/biopsy you will need to stay on gluten. The pretest gluten challenge for this one is only two weeks.

Thank you for this help. Much appreciated

There is a gluten-related disorder known as NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms as celiac disease but doe not damage the small bowel villi and therefore does not produce antibodies. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.  NCGS is 10-12x more common than celiac disease.

Have you considered eating plenty of gluten from now until your capsule endoscopy? If you truly have celiac disease that would increase the chances of damage being seen.

I just want to reinforce what Scott said and that is we have tended to think in these neat little black and white categories of it's either celiac or NCGS when in reality it may not be quite that neat. There's just a lot we don't know and the immune system is very complex. I often wonder if I had been gluten free as a child if I would have avoided developing celiac disease as an adult. I think there is also this misconception that if you have NCGS, gluten is not harmful, it just creates discomfort and inconvenience.

I am actually in the middle of this article currently already!   Thank you.  This website is extraordinarily helpful.

This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

Gotcha.  I'll give 100% gluten-free a whirl after my testing concludes.  I know the traditional endoscopy is the gold standard, but I've already had that done and it was normal, so my gastro wants to do a capsule endo to try to cover more surface area and see if she can see anything further than the traditional endo... If I do have Celiac, I just seem to be on the very early end, I think.
