I will certainly give this one a try.  Certainly more War&Peace than standard recipe but if its remotely accurate...tasty! Thank you Scott!

Dear friends, I need your help. I have tried every bread I can find (admittedly limited, as I live in the wilds of Mississippi). Each one seems like it will be okay, then I make a sandwich and it turns into glue in my mouth at first bite. What breads have you found to be at least acceptable, if not actually good? Bread is my ONLY problem. I am a good cook and I have been able to convert almost all our favorite foods to gluten-free. Bread is the only problem.

Bread is the thing I was going to miss and so figured it out quickly. All the brands mentioned here were too dry, crumbly and just plain expensive. I finally found Sam's Gluten Free breads at Walmart. These are denser than gluten bread but hold up to a sandwich without falling apart. If they are getting a little stale, pop it in the toaster and it softens up.  It is also less expensive than the brands listed.  It is what I use in a pinch if I do not have time to make bread.

Franz is not dry and crumbly. It is denser than gluten bread and expensive, however, unless, as Scott pointed out, you get the Costco twin pack. But if you don't live in the west you may not have access to it.

I paid almost $9 for a loaf of Canyon Bakehouse last week (because I wasn't paying attention). It's good but not that good. I'm tired of being gouged. I understand that it needs to cost more than wheat bread, but that's ridiculous.

I've been buying Kroger's house brand multi-grain for as long as they've been offering it. It's acceptable for sandwiches and costs less than the specialty brands. It has been unavailable for a few weeks now, presumably to try and fix the propensity for molding (I've returned a few loafs).

I'm about ready to start making my own bread due to cost, quality, and availablity. There was a little bake shop in my town that made gluten-free bread, but they quit making it, probably just not enough demand. It was far better and less expensive that any I've ever bought in the grocery stores. I need to find an authoritative source for a recipe and possibly a bread maker.

I had my first Canyon Bakehouse last week..bought bagels…they were eh..so far Trader Joe’s has the best bagels!

My bread options are not endless. My go-to was Canyon, but their price is now about $1.50 more than Udi's, so now I have to eat Udi's.

But - has anyone checked out the size of their pieces of bread lately? Man, are they getting stingier.

Scott Adams Grand Master

We may need a law passed to restrict the minimum size of sliced bread!

Speaking of laws, at one time there was a movement afoot to get Celiac people covered under the ADA law. Did anything ever come of that?

This is the last we've heard about this:

I just had to get FMLA for work and my HR person also sent the ADA paperwork so I’m thinking it must be listed on there now!

I like Schar multigrain bread.  It's also expensive, but more bread-like.  I've found it to be least expensive at Walmart.  Another brand I like is Three Bakers, which I find in the freezer at Albertson's / Von's.

Making your own bread is a better option for me. I have several ones I make but my favorite and frequently used is Scott Adams soft white bread. I do however use 1/2 brown rice flour and 1/2 white rice flour. I use this for bread, hamberger buns and pizza dough. Vitacost has super fine flours and amazon has decent priced yeast and milk powder. If you never made home made it will take some practice

Good article in today's NY Times about "shrinkflation."

I can't access the article, Plumbago, without taking out a subscription. Have you seen the pizza commercial about this with Shaquil O'Neil and "Shaqflation"?

I have recently discovered Dr Scharr,s deli style sour dough bread. I love it. My problem all along has not been taste (many taste very good) but texture. As soon as it hit my mouth it turned to glue. Dr Scharr's has a texture very close to regular bread. It is a bit expensive, so I limit my sandwiches. With new crop tomatoes coming is, I am loving it!!!!

You got tomatoes coming in already!

I just arrived Canada and find this product in grocery store. It tastes very good, but the price is still expensive for students. My roommate can't believe that one would cost so much to buy a bag of bread.

I’m the same about bread . I live in Rhode Island I’ve found white gluten-free bread at Aldi’s grocery store big slices and pretty good . And like you a lot of breads are pricey .

This one I have always liked as wel. My complaint with all gluten free breads aside from taste, texture and cost , is the once opened you have like 5 days to use it. Also the gluten free diet has skyrocketed me into full blown diabetes, which isn’t well controlled and my diabetes does not like gluten free anything , spikes my sugar terribly 😔

Morning All, Just an update, I got an urgent appointment through my contact with PALS. The doctor confirmed her levels were the highest possible so she likely had higher levels of inflammation. Since the appointment, they ordered a second set of bloods, but as many of you confirmed he felt there was no doubt she was coeliac so asked us to start gluten-free. Since starting around a month ago, we have had no vomiting and this is the first week that we haven’t had to give her movicol. She’s had a (currently) a two week break from winter colds which is unheard of for her as she used to have a permanent cold in the winter months. Her tummy is softer and deflating quite a lot and her faces looks a little rosier. It’s wonderful and although I know we will have tough times in the future and difficulties with eating out, I feel so happy that we can make her better.    Thanks all.

Yes.  My son was diagnosed at weaning in 1973 His treatment was Nutramigen until he healed and was weaned to a gluten free diet.  Nutramigen with Enflora LGG Toddler: Designed for older infants and toddlers aged 9 to 36 months  While your medical system is causing delay, I think you should start GFD and document improvement and do gluten challenge when the doctors are ready for her.  She is suffering and you don't know how it is affecting her growth and she is positive.  Waiting on the beauracracy.  I still remember how my son suffered while we looked for the reason.  One doctor wanted to give my wife valium because his swollen belly was being caused by her anxiety.  But to know the answer and have to watch her suffer!

In case your tests turn out negative you may still want to try a gluten-free diet. Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
    • Jack Common
Thank you for your answer. Well, I'm going to eat at least 5 slices a day, each of them is 35 grams. I think I'll do blood tests again after four weeks. If the results are negative or not clear, I'll continue the challenge and repeat blood tests again after another four weeks.

You are correct in looking closer at her diet, as there may still be trace amounts of gluten, even from a gluten-free bakery (are their ingredient suppliers certified gluten-free?). You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/  For people with celiac disease hidden gluten in their diets is the main cause of elevated Tissue Transglutaminase IgA Antibodies (tTG-IgA), but there are other conditions, including cow's milk/casein intolerance, that can also cause this, and here is an article about the other possible causes:
