gluten-free Hot Dog and Hamburger Buns

I MISS hotdog and hamburger buns…. I have learned to eat burgers without a bun pretty easily but I like sloppy joes and pizza burgers and other things that really need a hamburger bun. And I love hot dogs on a bun. The only gluten-free buns around my area are frozen UDIs brand, which frozen works good so I don’t waste them and can use as needed. They are way too expensive. But How do I best use these for the best taste? When I have tried buns in the past or breads sometimes with like sloppy joes gluten-free gets soggy and the texture is awful. And since these are frozen I am clueless on how to best unthaw / defrost / toast or what works and tastes best for gluten-free. Or if you have any other buns that you recommends please feel free to share. Thanks

The Schar buns are the best I have had and you can order straight from their website. Give them a try!

They are a sponsor here, but due to the powder psyllium fiber which seems to re-create the chewiness of the wheat buns I used to eat, I like Little Norther Bakehouse's buns:

Do you toast them or do anything special ?

Thanks. I looked at those but I have only been able to find them to purchase online in bulk and as a struggling single mom I just don’t usually have the extra money to buy things in bulk… that’s been a huge issue for me with the gluten free diet

I don’t toast the Schar buns but you can. They have been the closest to a real bun I’ve found

Hi Ginger!

I use either Udi's or Canyon hamburger buns... My family loves both.  Depending on what I'm in the mood for I either 1.wrap them in foil and warm them in the oven, 2. put them on a baking sheet opened up (this toasts them nicely or melts cheese in top... Also depending on what I'm in the mood for), 3. Add them to the grill when the burgers are almost done, or 4. Butter and toast then in a skillet.

All of these work well for us!  I hope you find one that works for you!

Trader Joe's also makes excellent GF flour tortillas, bagels and hamburger buns.

I use Udi's because that is usually all that is available here. I thaw them in the microwave, smush them a little flat, then butter and grill in a skillet. They are not real good, but toasted they are OK.

Yes stress can .make the pain worse. That being said it is taking years for my body to heal. I am not able to eat out as 98 % of restaurants do not know how to cook for celiacs.  I only eat out on special occasions. Any time I eat gluten I feel there is a tourch going through my digestive system specifically in the area you have mentioned.  Like where the deudenal is . I am very sensitive to cross contamination so any small amount of gluten makes me sick.

@Ems10, celiac diagnosis normally involves two steps. The first one is serum antibody testing which you may have already have had done and are waiting on the results. The second step involves and endoscopy (aka, gastroscopy) with biopsy of the small bowel lining. This second step is typically ordered if one or more antibody tests were positive, is a confirmation of the serum antibody testing and is considered the gold standard diagnostic test for celiac disease. Now hear this, you should not be eating gluten free weeks or months in advance of either kind of testing. Prematurely going on a gluten free diet can and will sabotage the results of the endoscopy/biopsy should you get a referral to a GI doc who would want to do that. Eliminating gluten from the diet causes causes inflammation to subside which allows the small bowel ling to heal such that the damage they would be looking for is no longer there.

Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

It might make sense for you to find out if they've run a celiac disease test on you, and if not, consider planning for it.

Thanks for your reply! I’m really not too sure, the doctor just took a few tubes of blood & that’s all I know 🥹
