Mucus discharge

I don't know if anyone can help. I was diagnosed with celiac last June. Since going gluten free the diarrhea has stopped, in fact things have gone the other way. What is bothering me is the occasional rectal mucus discharge. I have no other symptoms and it doesn't happen very often. As I haven't seen anyone since my diagnosis, I don't know if this is normal or not

We usually see mucus in the stool in those with undiagnosed celiac disease and those not adhering to a gluten free diet. However, the mucus could also be coming from lower down in the intestinal track. I would seek a physician consult. You might also check into getting a follow-up endoscopy/biopsy on the small bowel to check for healing progress since going gluten free.

I had this symptom when I was diagnosed. Are you sure that your diet is 100% gluten-free?

Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months.

Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.

This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

The doc that diagnosed me emphasized that the ears, eyes, nose, and mouth all drain to the same place. He said, besides obviously not eating foods containing gluten, to eliminate flours from my world immediately. If gluten flour is used, it gets into the air, and would be breathed in through the nose, which drains down to the stomach. Also, if it gets into the air, it settles on everything, which would be very difficult to clean. So you are correct to be concerned about flour in the kitchen. Some people may argue this isn't necessary, but it was my doc's advice, which was 10 years ago. My step granddaughter was diagnosed with celiacs last year and she got the same advice at a post-diagnosis nutritionist consultation in Seattle.

Cristina, it’s possible you may find other foods that also give you the same reaction. My advice: make a list and stay away from them.

Funny you should mention this.  Three times in the past I've had a similar reaction to glutening when I eat broccoli. People have suggested I try it again to make sure it is the problem but I have three distinct memories of meals containing broccoli which caused chills, feeling sick and diarrhea within an hour or two of eating (and this was before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease).  Because I reacted in such a way, I have no intention of giving it another go!

Just as an aside, perhaps others have the same problem, I have the same allergic reaction ( migraines, stomach pains, liquid diarrhea) to cellulose as I do to: palm/coconut oil derivatives ( seems everything has palm oil, or palmitate something in it), spinach, tomatoes, figs, grapes that I know of to date. God designed us as complex systems of organs, nerves, muscle, skin, cells so brilliantly … and it only took big pharma, big Agra to take us down. hopefully this will be helpful to someone searching out there for answers. thank you!

Has anyone found Gluten free Eggroll wraps?  I have always made eggrolls; 50 at a time and can no longer find gluten free wraps.  We have many Asian stores in our area but they do not carry them.  And the place I used to purchase them is no longer in business. I do not like the egg or cheese ones they have come out with; they are not big enough or strong enough the roll the mixture in. Thanks to all
