Whole Foods Frosted Flakes

I bought frosted flakes (their store brand) a month or two ago from Whole Foods. I often eat a whole box a day due to being lazy. I noticed that I was having more and more intestinal problems. The last time I went back to whole foods to load up as I usually do every two weeks, I noticed a 3 inch by 5 inch card saying that their frosted flakes are not gluten free anymore. They now contain barley malt. I read the ingredients and barley malt wasn't listed. Apparently they don't care if they poison someone with celiac disease! I don't think that the FDA would think that a 3x5 card is a suitable substitute for a change in ingredients. I called my son who also has celiac disease and he had just bought 20 boxes. He took them back and complained to the manager. I have to assume that Whole Foods would like to be honest about their ingredients unless the had alot of boxes to get rid of first. In that case it's OK to poison us. They probably saved about $20,000 by poisoning us.

That's awful! And to think WF is a place I trust(ed) to tell me what products are safe.

Guess not...

Oh my goodness! Thanks for telling us. I wondered why they had been taken from the shelves for quite some time, but when they did return the ingredients list was the same, and they did not have that card displayed at the WF I went to--I have been feeling sick quite a bit lately--I guess this solves it. Thanks again.

I'm 63 and was diagnosed in 2010. Prior to diagnosis I was suspected of having to strokes and medicated according each time. A neurologist called me in to discuss my scan. From that discussion I had a camera down and celiac disease was confirmed. I suffered continued pain and numbness down my left side and was offered amitriptyline, and antidepressants that was also diagnosed for nerve pain. I said no as I didn't want the stigma of being on antidepressants. Seven years later I begged my GP to prescribe them and my life was changed almost immediately. If I'm glutened accidentally whilst eating out then my nerves pain/symptoms get worse but it's nothing compared to taking the medication and feeling a little drowsy every now and then.  The best of luck for the future.

@jenniber, it would be pointless for your brother to get tested for celiac disease if he has already gone gluten free. Doing so invalidates the testing. He would need to undergo a "gluten challenge". That is, he would need to go back to consuming generous amounts of gluten (at least 10g daily, or the amount found in about 4-6 slices of wheat-based bread) for several weeks leading up to the day of the blood draw.
