Accidental Glutening Again

ack... I got glutened yesterday... I only ate food at home that I prepared myself and the only questionable thing that I did was when I was getting food out of the fridge, touched something sticky and without even thinking put my finger in my mouth to taste it... (I should have known that hubby is not that careful with his gluten crumbs and it could've been jelly with biscuit crumbs in it...) I started getting really flushed in the face and my tummy really hurt then the big "D" came to visit and I itch ALL OVER MY BODY... hubby also woke me up during the night, said that I had TWO seizures in my sleep... Crap I hate this.

this morning all my joints are swollen and painful and I still freakin itch everywhere... I can't believe that it only takes a teeny tiny amount for me to get so sick...

Oh Nini--that sounds awful!!! Sorry you're so sick. I am always amazed at how little it takes to make us sick. Feel better :)

Guest cassidy

sorry you aren't feeling well. I think most of us have done this to ourselves.

I had a bad week last week. I went out to dinner with the entire family and let the waitress convince me they could make me a safe meal, which they couldn't. Three days later I went out to dinner for a business dinner at Bonefish, ordered off their gluten-free menu, and barely crawled to my car after dinner. Then, 3 days after that I was on vacation and let a waiter convince me that my specially prepared meal was gluten-free, when it certainly wasn't. That was a tough week that I haven't gotten over yet.

Hope you feel better soon!

yikes Cassidy, that must've been one rough week...

yesterday was especially frustrating because my daughter and I had been out most of the day at two separate festivals and both had food, and since we couldn't eat any of them we were being so good and came home to eat... I guess I was just so tired from running around town that I just wasn't thinking... this itching is driving me crazy, but no visible rash...

nini, i am so sorry that you are having such a reaction. it makes me sad that some of us react to such miniscule amounts, but it does make me feel better to know that I'm not the only one!

i thought of you last night when I made my cheese sticks :) :) :)

Oh no! Im sorry!! I hate when stuff like that happens! I hope you feel better fast!

Its crazy isn't it Nini, I so sorry that it takes just that small amt. for such a reaction like that. Does it help to scarch the itch or do you just leave it alone? Make sure your taking your B-vits to get you back in balance. I'll have real light tremors lasting for about 15 seconds in my neck and shoulder area once in awhile and I never know what causes that. I'm sure its a nerve thing though because it happens when I start to fall asleep. Hope you recover fast.

thank you everyone... if I scratch, it actually makes me itch more, so I have to try to ignore it! I usually take b-vits anyway, so I'm good there... wondering if I should take some benedryl, if that will help...

Sorry you got glutened Nini! Hope you feel better sooner rather than later... :(:)

don't scratch, that just makes it feel worse, and then makes you scar a lot more easily, i have scars on my stomach from scrathcing during an anaphalyxis reaction. I don't take benadryl 'cause it makes me throw up almost instantly, don't know if it is from gluten, or i am just alergic to the benadryl in general.

Hope you feel better soon!

thanks... I didn't take the benedryl cos it usually knocks me out and I don't need to sleep the day away.

it's taking all my willpower to not scratch which is why I'm spending too much time on the computer today

nini -- I know what the seizures are like, I get them too. I wouldn't know if I get them in my sleep. I'm all alone. But I will say they are frightening to say the least! Be well!

Nini--can you take Claritan? When I get itchy with a reaction, I take one a day until I'm over it. It causes me no side effects.

I'm sorry you feel so sick while being so careful most of the time! At least I know why I am sick today, I purposely glutened myself yesterday, to trigger DH (usually takes only a day or two for ugly, pus-filled blisters to appear) to get a positive biopsy from the dermatologist I am seeing tomorrow. Today I am feeling stupid for doing it.

Anyway, I hope you'll be better soon. I wished I'd know how to get rid of that itch myself, no good advice here.

It never seemed to help me in the past... I don't think it does anything for me... bummer though because THIS ITCHING HAS GOT TO GO!!! (oh and now I'm starting to get a bumpy rash that is visible)

Darn! Well, hope you get over that itching soon--sounds like no fun at all

I take Ibuprofin for itchiness. I know it sounds crazy, but everyone I've told about it finds that they also get relief. All I can guess is that it blocks the itch receptors the same way it would block the pain receptors (?) I don't remember enough biology to know whether that idea is crazy. Anyway -- try it. It gives me more relief than things marketed for itchiness...I can't believe no one ever talks about it.

GreySaber Apprentice

How common are instant reactions? I tend to react about 20 minutes later myself. Basically if I eat something wrong as a restruant, I can usually predict my level of reaction on the way home from the way my stomache feels.

But then I might be an allergy and not a celiac. I'm not really sure.

Molly, you might be having a reaction to the antihistamines. I get weird reactions to sudafed.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!
