Wow!! That is awesome! I've been to the Highwood once since I was dx, they were very good and knowledgeable. The wedding is the end of May, my friend says not to worry, that they told her at SAIT they could deal with special diets. I think it's really cool, though, that they are doing a specifically gluten-free dinner!! Great for the students and would be great for us as well. At $50 a pop, though, I think I'll have to pass, lol.

I'm 63 and was diagnosed in 2010. Prior to diagnosis I was suspected of having to strokes and medicated according each time. A neurologist called me in to discuss my scan. From that discussion I had a camera down and celiac disease was confirmed. I suffered continued pain and numbness down my left side and was offered amitriptyline, and antidepressants that was also diagnosed for nerve pain. I said no as I didn't want the stigma of being on antidepressants. Seven years later I begged my GP to prescribe them and my life was changed almost immediately. If I'm glutened accidentally whilst eating out then my nerves pain/symptoms get worse but it's nothing compared to taking the medication and feeling a little drowsy every now and then.  The best of luck for the future.

@jenniber, it would be pointless for your brother to get tested for celiac disease if he has already gone gluten free. Doing so invalidates the testing. He would need to undergo a "gluten challenge". That is, he would need to go back to consuming generous amounts of gluten (at least 10g daily, or the amount found in about 4-6 slices of wheat-based bread) for several weeks leading up to the day of the blood draw.

Think her thyroid levels were fine, she’s had various blood tests since being in hospital. Been started on B12 injections for now instead of the oral medication and more bloods taken to check for pernicious anaemia

Hi Scott, Thanks so much for all this great info!  You mentioned the HLAs do more in the immune system.  I know little about that.  Is there research that explains what those other roles are?   I hope Flores gets her funding because whatever the upshot, we'll at least have more information. As to the wheat...when I first heard about it, I thought, "Oh great!"  But wouldn't it have to rely on newly built gluten free storage silos, gluten free transport trucks, etc.  And then there's still the potential for cross contamination once it gets to a restaurant kitchen.  Is it that much more advantageous than the wheat that has gluten extracted from it?
