Symptoms Worse When Pmsing

I don't know if this will even get posted but for the women do your celiac symptoms get worse when you are close to your period and/or are in the midst of it? I can't take the BC pill it made me soo depressed and my hair was coming out by the handfuls

Another question does anyone have an opinion on whether to use the all natural tampons that consist only of cotton? I never thought about it but I wonder if the tampons have gluten?

I know there are a lot of reasons why someones PMS could be severe hormones ect ect. but still curious because seem to get the mouth sores when I am about to get my period even when I think I am being sooo careful about the gluten?

THanks in advance for any responses

the hormone changes and uterine contractions that occur at the beginning of your cycle (particularly the first few days of menstration) most definitely have an effect on the intestines as well - independent of celiac disease. the high levels of progesterone that occur in the last week of the cycle can cause these problems to start up a few days before the beginning of the cycle as well.

the uterine contractions that cause cramping definitely mess with my intestines for those first couple days of my cycle.

Thank you Tiffany for responding - what you said makes sense - I guess there is no diffinitive answer for this one

I've never had PMS that I can recall, with the exception of a low back ache a day or two before my cycle. Haven't had a cycle yet since having my last child so not sure whether my diet changes will have any effect.

Has anyone noticed a corolation with lactose during the last week before your cycle? I am having serious lactose issues this month. I have been gluten-free for gosh... 2 yrs...?? I have heard that some women have issues some months before their cycle.

Angi,

I wasn't on dairy before my pregnancy and have found out I am allergic to it so I can't help you there.

Sorry :(

Ya know interesting that my last period wasn't half as bad as usual (minimal cramps) and I am wondering if its because I cut out soda entirely for about two months now> Maybe its that MSG thing everyone is talking about?

I don't get PMS too badly, except for a higher propensity for crying, and more bloating than usual - intestinally speaking. But I've only been gluten-free for two weeks; I don't know if it will get better.

I would definitely use all cotton tampons (my periods are really too light to use tampons at all and I use all natural pads), not because of gluten, but because those things have a lot of lint, and I'd hate to think of all that nasty lint hanging around being from chemicals and whanot. I tend to stick to what God/Nature made.

Good luck.

So interesting you say this. I don't tend to have to many problems with dairy but the other day I had a milkshake from McDonald's (which is gluten-free ofcourse) and the rest of the day was having major problems. All I had eaten that day at that point was some grapes in the morning and Tomato soup from Pacific Foods so I know it had to be from the milkshake.

The only thing that is really bad for me has been cramps. They have got better since going gluten free and some months it will get really bad and other months it will be ok. I always seem to crave dairy when I am pmsing.

I read a really good book by Anne Marie Colbin called "food and healing" where she postulated that eating the reproductive biproducts of other animals (dairy/eggs) adversely affected human women in ways dealing with their reproductive cycles. I don't know about it for sure, but when I quit dairy, my periods got much lighter and easier, and my cramping became completely manageable. Just an idea.

Since going gluten-free six months ago I have noticed that my PMS has gotten worse, but the period itself shorter. I too quit soda a few months ago so maybe it is related. However this last week I was glutened and my mouth soars are back with a vengence, so is the fatigue. Sucks. I have been so careful but my family is not always supportive and cc can be an issue. Is your partner kissing you after they eat gluten? Maybe that is where you are getting the cc. Just an idea... not sure if it is a real problem.
