Your Opinion - Best Bread?

What do you believe is the best gluten-free bread? - either a mix or from scratch. I've tried several myself, but wouldn't consider any of them to be all that. I've given up on buying whatever I can get my hands on and then having to throw it out once it's baked. Let me know what you suggest and I'll try it :)

I use Gluten Free Pantry Baking mix, in a Kusinart bread machine with a gluten free setting, avalible at Williams sonoma and worth the $100. I get the sandwhich bread mix at our local wild oats. I make this about every 2 weeks I let it cool after coming out of the machine, and slice with an electric knief then refrigerate for freshness!

I don't eat the breads anymore, actually grains in general. But my favorite when I was eating it was the Gluten Free Pantry French Bread Mix. I mixed it up in my Kitchenaid and baked it in the oven. It has a nice crust and the inside was not dry at all.

Pamela's Amazing Wheat-Free Bread Mix - My kids even like it, and my daughter requests the toast at least a couple of times a week for breakfast. I made BLTs with it last week, and it was fantastic.

The breads from the Gluten Free Bread Basket - hands down!! You don't even have to toast it to eat it.

So far I have had their mock rye (my favorite), the country sandwich bread and an Italian Herb bread. They are all incredible!! I even used the Italian Herb one the other day with a hamburger. Amazing!

Bake it Yourself:

The submarine sandwich bread in Annalise Robert's book is incredible. I only made it once but definately plan on making it again.

I have tried all the breads above and some more. I like the GLuten Free Pantry for toast, etc. It does go bad if you don't freeze it right away though. Best bread for taking a sandwich to work already made.

I tried Bread by Anna and liked the texture, but didn't like the beany flavor. It too needs to be frozen within 24 hours to be any good.

I also tried the Gluten Free Basket. It was definitely not good to eat without toasting when it arrived at my house. It had been made 2 days before. I toasted some of the "Country" one and it wasn't my favorite flavor. The Cinnamon/raisin was pretty good toasted.

I haven't tried Chebe.

My favorite though for convenience and taste is Kinnikinnick. I love their English Muffins, Pizza crusts, White Sandwich Bread, Brown Bread and chocolate covered donuts. I love making a toasted sandwich out of their breads. I also love the english muffins with eggs.

There is another one I have tried and I can't remember the name of it, but it is Nasty. Oh and I did try Pamela's, but it didn't turn out for me.

my own recipe, which is on my site below, is my favourite. everyone, even not celiacs, enjoy it, and it is open to a lot of variety. perhaps i'm biased. B)

Here's another recipe (and you are back to trying all sorts of different things again . . . that's what you get when you ask for opinions from a 10,000 member board!). My cousin says it's much like kinnikinnik's . . . it makes really great pizza crust, too.

I cool it, slice it, and then keep it in the fridge or freezer in a ziplock. Then I just reheat the number of peices I need in the microwave for 20 - 30 seconds. My daughter went crazy when I made this for her today: BREAD! BREAD! BREAD! SANDWICH! (Can you tell that I've been the bad mom who hasn't made bread for a while?)

I got a lot of suggestions from you all, thanks! I'm looking for a bread that is more puffy than packed. The reason I ask is because I am a franchisee and will be opening my first location in 8weeks. Being a celiac, I would like to have gluten-free bread available to others like me. Once I'm publicly open, I'll let you guys know what I end up going with, and when & where it's available!

Pamela's Amazing Wheat Free Bread mix is puffy. I make it in my Cuisinart Breadmaker on the gluten-free setting. It gets the same loft as I would expect from regular bread and isn't dense.

Mine, too. Especially soft (like regular bread) the first day it's baked .

I started with Bette Hagman's recipes but then made it a more fiber rich and complete protein by changing it a bit. I also like it much better than the bland potato starch/tapioca starch heavy processed breads I've tried. I use 1/3 each corn, garbonzo, and tapioca flour in everything from breads to cakes. and 2 cups of this mix with 2 cups of corn meal for cornbread.

Not into baking bread, I buy mine from Whole Foods, the sandwich bread does me fine. I can eat it as a sandwich or toast it. I like their cinnamon rainsin bread too. Barbara

Does anyone have a favorite bread from Bette Hagman's The gluten-free Gourmet Bakes Bread? Mum bought me this book and Zojirushi Supreme bread machine. I'm really looking for a sandwich bread - it seems like the Four Flour Bread may be best?

I'm a fan of the sesame variation of the 4-flour bread, but I stiil haven't tried all of her recipes. What sort of bread did you like in your wheaty days? Light & smooth, or more whole-grainy?

In my wheat eating days I liked dense, seed filled breads - full of fiber, but I want nothing like that now!

I want something like wonder bread! :rolleyes: I think it's cause all the gluten-free breads I've had are pretty dense that my pallet would like something, shall I say, crappy? I'd love to get a spongy bread, layer some bologna and american cheese, a bit of mayo and have it stick to the roof of my mouth.

However in my wheat eating days I would have poo poo'd this...

I have to agree with the majority Pamela's bread products have been the best so far. I also bake my own with lots of trial and error. Practice makes perfect? Kinninnki does awesome tapioca hot dog and hamburger buns.

I have a real hard time eating those buns - at 280 calories (I could be off a few here) and 66 grams of carbs it's a diabetics worst nightmare. And they're too big!! I can't even get my mouth around a burger or dog in those buns...are there any that are better?? Less caloric, less carbs and not as huge?? It's the first Kinnikinnic product I've tried and I really wasn't impressed.

      Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have.It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

      @Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

      Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

      Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!
