hey sugarlust, welcome to the board :)

Heres some gluten-free foods that I like to eat:

Eskal pretzels, Woolworths and Coles both usually have them.

Frozen desserts from the gluten free bakery, these are available at some Health food shops

Country Life fruit or multigrain bread available from Coles and Woolworths, it seems to be very popular as alot of times they are sold out.

Coles now have a range from Freedom foods in their frozen section, it include chicken tenders, crumbed fish, sticky date puddings and much more.

San remo penne pasta is great, just make sure it says gluten free on the box and it is usually in the same section as the normal kind.

Muffin break also have gluten-free sweet or savoury muffins that are very nice.

Just reporting that I have found that Orgran Licorice that is AMAZING . Gluten Free, dairy free ,egg free, yeast free and YUMMY !

Saz Explorer

Does anyone have a recipe for custard or vanilla slice? I'm not sure what is but I'm talking about the one that traditionally has a yellow base and pink icing.

I got a sudden craving for some today.

Also glutano chocolate O's are great, they taste like an oreo, but they are a lot smaller.

georgie Enthusiast

I don't know if this helps or not but Orgran have a gluten-free Custard Powder. It could be thickened with guar gum. The flakey pastry would be a challenge but you may find someway to do that ???

Saz Explorer

Thanks georgie. I think I will just use sweet short crust pastry as I've got a few recipies for it. White wings also have gluten-free custard powder.

Does anyone know if Country Life still make their hamburger rolls? I haven't seen them around for awhile.

Can you post a good recipe ? I need to make some pies and don't know where to start. And I am using Eskal crackers at the moment and wonder if a custard slice could be made with them ?

I found some nice bread by Golden Hearth, its is new and comes from the Gold Coast. I tired the gluten-free seed loaf, I warmed in the microwave and ate as bread.

I got it from a health food shop, I have seen the brand in supermarkets but not sure if its the gluten-free one they sell.

Sweet Shortcrust Pastry

1 1/2 cups gluten-free cornflour

1/4 cup soy flour

1/4 cup custard powder

2 tbs castor sugar

125g cold butter chopped

1 egg white

1-2tbs iced water

Sift the flours and custard poweder into a bowl. Mix in the sugar. Rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the centre, stir in the egg white and iced water 1 tbs at a time until the pastry comes together. Gather into a ball and flaten slightly.

Roll out between 2 sheets of baking paper, enough to line 8 10cm flan tins or 20cm pie dish. Trim of any excess. Refrigerate for 20 mins.

Cover pastry with baking paper and fill with uncooked rice or baking beads. bake for 15 mins in 200c oven. Remove paper and rice and bake 5 mins untill golden.

I found that the dough didn't come together it seemed a bit dry however be careful about how much extra water you add- Mine ended up sticky.

For those who haven't used soy flour, it will give the uncooked dough a bitter taste but don't stress as it will be fine once cooked.

Hey all.

I tired the patties sticky date puddings last night- I really liked it. I prefer them to the Freedom foods one. I have also recently tired the livewell pita breads- also very nice but far to expensive to have all the time.

Does anyone know of any supermarket pasta sauces we can have? eg Dolmio. leggos etc.

Aussie Peg Rookie

I tried the Patties lamingtons and meat pies the other day and they're the best i've tried, delicious!! I'm going to try the sausage rolls next, haven't had one in so long!

I went to Coles the other day after not going to a supermarket in ages and I was nearly crying at all the beautiful food in the gluten free section, they have heaps more than when I last went and all the things I really needed! Like chocolate biscuits ;)....

Leda mintons are heaven, they're like mint slice biscuits but are gluten and dairy free! Fountain also has some gluten free sauces now that I haven't seen gluten free anywhere yet - teriyaki sauce and steak sauce, yum!

With pasta sauces, I think we can have most of them, it'll list wheat, barley, oats and rye in the ingredients if it contains any :) I usually get Raguletto bolognese sauce in rich tomato or a Dolmio chunky one and have just bought a Five Brothers sauce to try this week. I've been using Leggos pesto too :)

Huzzah for all the gluten free food arriving in our supermarkets!!

Many pasta sauces are okay. I always use the Italian type sugo's such as Provisto Sugo or Val Verde, La Gina. They are just tomatoes and maybe salt or sugar and no other added ingredients.

My daughter gave the Freedom Foods lasagna the thumbs down. The donuts go the thumbs up and the fish bites she quite liked.

Patties make the best pies I think and they are cheaper than Freedom. They should be in Coles stores now and some IGA's also.

Patties are using recipes from Uncle Rick's which were excellent. They have joined forces with Uncle Ricks and will be producing more products as well. I spoke to them at the Coeliac convention at Caulfied Racecourse in Melbourne.

There are now oven fries that are gluten-free!! Found them in Coles last week.

Re the Fountain sauces - i get confused because they say gluten-free, yet some of the ingredients indicate otherwise. As my two are so sensitive, we're playing it very safe. One warning too - I bought Fountain sweet Chilli sauce - it was gluten-free. BUT that was the small bottle. I stupidly bought the large one and didn't check properly - under the list of ingredients, which doesn't list anything with gluten, in green writing on orange - really easy to read -not (specially with my eyes) it says contains gluten!!! Sadly my daughter had already used one biottle, but at least we knew why the skin broke out and the insomnia went mad!

I also cook the Auntie Kath gluten-free cookies - both in the oven or in a frypan.

And today we had fun making cupcakes - gluten-free - with gluten-free icing and decorations - using a recipe for sponge cake from the CWA. They taste great!

I went to Kylies Bakery in Adelaide and she had American M & M s !! No Gluten in them ! Yummo !

If a product says gluten free then it overrides any ingredients that you may think have gluten. I also wondered about the Fountain Soy Sauce but it is definately gluten Free. This question came up at the coeliac conference in Melbourne last month and Sue Shephard the dietician confirmed that fountain soy sauce is in fact gluten free.

I have the product list from Fountain are the following sauces etc are gluten free:

Sweet Chilli Sauce 250ml

Steak Sauce

Squeezie Tomato sauce

Squeezie sweet chilli sauce

Spicy red sauce

soy sauce gluten free

satay sauce

pepper steak sauce

mustard sauce

Hoi Sin Sauce

Teriyaki marinade

sweet chilli marinade

soy, honey and garlic marinade

satay marinade

red wine and garlic marinade

protuguesse chicken marinade

barbecue marinade

Hope this helps.

Also re. the oven fries there are quite a few McCains brands that are gluten free. Ignore Dextrose (from wheat) as there is no detectable gluten.

Also I think McCains make hash browns that are gluten free and Pommes as well.

Steggals now have pumpkin, sunflower and linseed coated chicken pieces that we can eat. I got them at woolies, they taste ok but I think next time I will put some lemon juice on it to add a bit of flavour.

Has anyone tried the Sealord 'Snakits' Tuna lite ? The ingredients are rice crackers and then the tuna is flavoured with tomato paste ,sundried tomato, vinegar, sugar , maize thickener, onion flavour. I have a packet here but is it safe to eat ? I thought it would be a handy meal to pack and have with you when you are in places without gluten-free food.

Have just had a great find ! www.taste.com.au type in gluten free into search engine toolbar on that site - and heaps of gluten-free recipes ! The Brownies look yummo!

:DI am Dairy intolerant as well as coeliac, but like my sweets so much. When I was finally diagnosed after 5yrs of my doctor telling me 'But you look so well' & this was after loosing 3stone over 6months (although I was overweight, unknowingly due to all the bread I had been eating before I was diagnosed.) After I went onto a gluten-free diet I soon started feeling ill again only to return to the specialist & have him tell me to avoid dairy for a year or so & try again, but that was not to be! I am always looking for new foods, especially sweets as I get so put out when there's a family or friends get together & no sweets are catered for me, but there is always copious amounts of cakes etc. so I am always stocking up on these items & freeze them for later. While at work one day a good friend brought in a supermarket brochure with a whole page of gluten-free foods & sweets, my favorite is 'Patties' Lamingtons & party pies. There was sausage rolls, shepards pies & more too. They are so good & the price is pretty reasonable as well!

As well in my area of Balmain/Rozelle 'About Life' is a grocery store specializising in gluten-free foods & has the Yummiest hazlenut cake that is the best & much more, so I am very fortunate indeed to have this store so close to me. But even though my mum & sister have since been diagnosed as well, they are both in WA., & even though wer'e in the same country they can't seem to get the same products as NSW. I feel quite alone at times, especially when having problems as there are a few other foods I have to avoid too, which leaves me feeling left out off things when I have no one to talk to about it. I look forward to visiting this site again, hoping I might meet like minded coeliacs. Anne

Hi Anne,

I TOTALLY KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!!

I am 25 and I have been diagnosed with celiac disease for nearly 2 months now and there are so many times that i have felt down about it all! esp the family get togethers! All my family live in NZ but i was back there a couple of weeks ago - because they are still learning (I am too) they kept on putting their 'foot in it' so to speak, asking me if i wanted a piece of cake - a beer - all kinds of things and me just to have to say - no i cant eat it

I have had one slip up so far, i caved in and had ONE bite of a sausage roll, it was oh so good but it set me back days!! i just felt so horrible!

Im definately going to head down to 'About life' as i am based in Sydney (Eastern Suburbs) perhaps we could meet there one day! I know that I would appreciate knowing someone locally that could suggest other brands or foods that they have discovered! Sometimes the highlight of my day is finding something else that is gluten free that i can eat!!!!

A big thing for me is eating out at restaurants, i love doing it but it is getting to the point where it stresses me out so much that by the time the food arrives i have lost my appetite!

ok enough of my ranting!!

look forward to hearing from you.

thanks

Does anyone know if the barbequed chooks from Woolies are safe ? The brown coating ? What is that ?

annemerlemac Newbie

 GLAD TO HEAR FROM YOU

Coles now sells a new line from Patties (gluten-free range) sausage rolls, pies, pizza rolls etc, they also have lamingtons etc. I know how important it is to me to be able to get what I feel like, especially now food is so much more important, as is takes up such a big part of my life, I have made it a 'must' enjoy. I have found a little vegan shop that sells tofu ice cream that tastes so much like normal ice cream & it comes in a few flavors, although my favorite is vanilla.

I am in need of a friendly face too, & would love to meet up & share over a cuppa & cake. I have a sister & mum with coeliac, but they are in WA. I have been diagnosed for about 4yrs & have only just managed to put some weight on after many stomach upsets, set backs & mistakes, so it will be good to talk to someone local who knows what products I'm talking about.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Anne

This article does not address migraines at all.  Yes, red wine and sulfites are often mentioned in connection with migraine triggers. With me, any kind of alcoholic beverage in very modest amounts will reliably produce a migraine. Nitrous oxide generators, which are vaso dialators, also will give me migraines reliably. So, I think most of my migraines are tied to fluctuations vascular tension and blood flow to the brain. That's why the sumatriptan works so well. It is a vaso constrictor.

Excessive dietary tyrosine can cause problems.  Everything in moderation.   Sulfites can also trigger migraines. Sulfites are found in fermented, pickled and aged foods, like cheese.  Sulfites cause a high histamine release.  High histamine levels are found in migraine.  Following a low histamine diet like the low histamine Autoimmune Protocol diet, a Paleo diet, helps immensely.    Sulfites and other migraine trigger foods can cause changes in the gut microbiome.  These bad bacteria can increase the incidence of migraines, increasing histamine and inflammation leading to increased gut permeability (leaky gut), SIBO, and higher systemic inflammation.   A Ketogenic diet can reduce the incidence of migraine.  A Paleo diet like the AIP diet, that restricts carbohydrates (like from starchy vegetables) becomes a ketogenic diet.  This diet also changes the microbiome, eliminating the bad bacteria and SIBO that cause an increase in histamine, inflammation and migraine.  Fewer bad bacteria reduces inflammation, lowers migraine frequency, and improves leaky gut. Since I started following the low histamine ketogenic AIP paleo diet, I rarely get migraine.  Yes, I do eat carbs occasionally now, rice or potato, but still no migraines.  Feed your body right, feed your intestinal bacteria right, you'll feel better.  Good intestinal bacteria actually make your mental health better, too.  I had to decide to change my diet drastically in order to feel better all the time, not just to satisfy my taste buds.  I chose to eat so I would feel better all the time.  I do like dark chocolate (a migraine trigger), but now I can indulge occasionally without a migraine after.   Microbiota alterations are related to migraine food triggers and inflammatory markers in chronic migraine patients with medication overuse headache https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11546420/

Then we would need to cut out all meat and fish as they are richer sources of tyrosine than nuts and cheese. Something else about certain tyrosine rich foods must be the actual culprit.
    • Scott Adams
I agree that KAN-101 looks promising, and hope the fast track is approved. From our article below: "KAN-101 shows promise as an immune tolerance therapy aiming to retrain the immune system, potentially allowing safe gluten exposure in the future, but more clinical data is needed to confirm long-term effects."
    • Scott Adams
Thank you so much for having the courage to share this incredibly vivid and personal experience; it's a powerful reminder of how physical ailments can disrupt our fundamental sense of self. What you're describing sounds less like a purely psychological body dysmorphia and more like a distinct neurological event, likely triggered by the immense physical stress and inflammation that uncontrolled celiac disease can inflict on the entire body, including the nervous system. It makes complete sense that the specific sensory input—the pressure points of your elbows on your knees—created a temporary, distorted body map in your brain, and the fact that it ceased once you adopted a gluten-free diet is a crucial detail. Your intuition to document this is absolutely right; it's not "crazy" but rather a significant anecdotal data point that underscores the mysterious and far-reaching ways gluten can affect individuals. Your theory about sensory triggers from the feet for others is also a thoughtful insight, and sharing this story could indeed be validating for others who have had similar, unexplainable sensory disturbances, helping them feel less alone in their journey.
