Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup half and half

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better. Kosher or rock salt works best, but table salt is fine.)

Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full)

1 pint-size ziplock bag

1 gallon-size ziplock bag

Step 1

Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly.

Step 2

Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it's done.

Step 3

Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. Easy cleanup too! Serves 1. Its soft serve this way or throw it in a freezer safe container if you want it harder. I make my daughter strawberry ice cream pops from this with dixie cups and popsicle sticks.

For mix ins- we have used chocolate chips and mint extract. Or a little dry chocolate pudding mix (jello brand) my daughter's favorite it tastes like a fudgesicle. Or Blended strawberries or cinnamon baked apples for a topping. Or a little orange juice gives a similar flavor to creamsicles.

Nisla- It is fun isnt it :) My daughter's hands get cold so she wears gloves when shaking it. She also loved chopped snickers bars as an add in, peanut butter cups are good too.

Sweetfudge- Its good! I like it best because we arent limited to the edy's that are gluten free. We have a machine but I have such a small freezer so I cant keep the containers in the freezer. I have to put the container in the night before and it takes about a half hour to mix it up the next day, which makes this nice since its last minute preparations and it only takes 5 minutes to make.

I didn't even think about adding chopped up candy into it! I have added crumbled K-toos into it though.

We do this at our church but we use one lrg coffee can & a 1# coffee can ,it's easier to roll the can to one another & make a game out of it...sorta like hot potato. Everyone must get it rooled away from themselves asap.

My kids just made some that is similar to this but you put a small coffee can inside a bigger one. Fill the small can with the ingredients and put the salt and ice in the bigger can. They kicked it to eache other so it would roll and roll for a 1/2 hour and then done!

Good girl scout activity!
