Do Prednisone, Amoxicillan, Or Provigil Have Glutan?

Recommended Posts

Those are the 3 drugs I was on that I've completely stopped taking, and my symptoms have gotten much better. Does anyone know if any of those drugs have Gluten? I called the pharmacy but they never called me back UG!! Thanks so much for any help you can give!!

DD just finished her 2nd round of amoxicillan since going gluten free earlier this year. Both times I had the pharmacist verify the ingredients. They called the company since different brands can be made differently, and I was told they are gluten free. She didn't appear to have a problem with it so it looks like the "pink stuff" liquid is okay.

Thanks Laura,

I did call the pharmacy, but the pharmacist was too busy to look it up and told me he would call me back and never did. I also have a little avoidance personality disorder going on, so it's hard for me to keep calling. I'll probably just call another pharmacy, but I'm not taking the meds anymore and haven't had any further attacks so far (although I'm feeling really crappy tonight so I think I've finally built the gluten up enough for me to get sick again UG)!! Oh well pretty soon I'm going to try going Gluten Free anyways. Just so that I can see if I feel any better. At this point I don't think any negative is going to convince me I don't have Celiac. I have ALMOST every symptom and have been diagnosed with a different intestinal problem (which I think is a misdiagnosis which is commen with Celiac) plus my daughter has an unexplainable rash that we haven't been able to diagnose as of yet and it's consistant with HD, so I just would love for the test to confirm it for me, but if they don't I think the only thing for me to do is go Glutan free and keep testing for other things just to be sure I don't have anything else seriously wrong. Hopefully someday Celiac will be easy to diagnose :)

You really shouldn't just stop taking an antibiotic once you've started it. All you do is make your bacteria resistant to that antibiotic.

I had to stop taking it because we suspect I may have Porphyria, so if it's not Celiac it could be Porphyria, and if I have Porphyria then the anti-biotics are what brought on the attach that put me in the hospital. You can not have certain drugs if you have Porphyria and I'm not willing to take a chance at having another one of those attacks!! Normally I wouldn't stop taking them, but under the circumstances my dr. and I decided it was best for me not to take any more drugs until I am either positive for Celiac or we rule out Porphyria.

Good. I'm glad you thought it through and made a decision based on what was most important. Some people just sort of panic and stop everything.

Angie, like I said, the best way to know it to go to the pharmacy and talk to them face to face. The other option is that she/he didn't know, and were calling the companies to find out. Either way, I have found that face to face is better than on the phone, because then you are there and they have to help, in some way or another. :)

your other option is to call the drug companies directly. I have done that before.

If you want an answer, there is a way to get it, it just might take some persistence.

according to this (and it isn't always updated, but is usually pretty reliable), prednisone, amoxicillin (certain brands) are safe. I don't know what provigil is and didn't see it on the list. Doesn't mean that it isn't safe though. just might not be on there.

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic2/modafinil.htm says that provigil has "starch"---so I would call the company or pharmacy to get a definitive answer.

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/pred.htm looks like pred. is safe.

it is important to note that these sites are not a replacement for finding out from a trusted authority.

Yah I definitely thought it through. I had to reschedule my surgery too (which I think is actually the best thing considering my health) because if I'm not on the anti-biotics and steroids then my nose won't be clear enough for the specialist to even do what's needed, so I decided to put all that on hold until I can get all my test results back and then we'll decide where to go from there. I've done more thinking in the last week then I would ever wish to do. I'm starting to drive myself stir crazy because there is so much to worry about. I'm glad it's the weekend because I don't have time for anything on weekends except for ice-hockey with my boys and X-Mas shopping ;)

Oh and I also think I have a uterine infection. It seems like yeast, but yeast always itches like crazy with me and I have no itching, so I have to go see the OBGYN for that one. I've had so many infections in the last 3 yrs. that I'm pretty sure my body is immune to anti-biotics by now :( !! Hopefully going glutan free will stop me from getting so many infections!!

My son recently took amoxicillin (liquid) manufactured by Sandoz; the prescription was filled at Target. Here's the reply to the email I sent to Sandoz:

Dear Dr. Smith,

The Amoxicillin Oral Suspension, along with the Sandoz Manufactured products does not contain any Wheat, Rye, Barley or Oats normally associated with a gluten.

They may contain starches derived from potato or corn.

Quality Assurance

Sandoz, US
