Crazy Swelling...

My right wrist (the one I had broke before and never got fixed up) has been very swollen since Saturday, and I dont even know why!! I tried wrapping it up but the only ones I have are already old/worn out so I dont think it has much elastic left in it. I tried not sleeping on it. That hasnt helped. Its usually gross enough that my veins seem to pop out almost. The whole hand feels like its on fire. And just now I unplugged my kettle to have some coffee, and it hurt so bad it was like I was lifting 100 lbs with it

I need your help on this one haha. I'm a lefty so I dont use my right hand for....anything  But its still distracting.

Try icing it. I'm also a fan of ibuprofen, but I realize some people prefer less chemical approaches.

Lisa,

Try Jestgar's advice - take two ibuprofen or acetamenophin, and ice your wrist and hand for 30 minutes (place a teatowel around the bag of ice to protect your skin, and alternate ice on for ten minutes, off for 5 until you've had 30 minutes total of ice time). If the swelling does not diminish dramatically (and I mean DRAMATICALLY within 30 minutes of finishing your ice time), PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go and see a doctor. Now. You could have an infection (which untreated could cause septic shock, which can kill you) or you could have damaged a nerve on a sharp bone fragment from your previous break. . .you could have snapped a tendon (which may need surgery to protect the functionality of your hand). . .you could be bleeding internally or have a blocked vessel (both of which, untreated, can lead to gangrene which would leave you a one-handed woman). . .or you could have rebroken your wrist, in which case you need medical attention. Swelling is your body's way of telling you something is seriously wrong. . .if your dog swelled up, you'd take him to the vet, right? Be nicer to yourself than to your dog, please. . .

So the swelling is could be a side-symptom of the off and on bleeding i've been having in the last couple weeks?? First it was a few days of black...poop. Then i've had off and on days of bleeding that it looks like i'm gonna start my period but it never is that--it just goes away.

I'll be seeing that specialist sooner than I can get into a family doc, so I'll maybe just have to live for a few more days..

But thanks for the advice, I might try wrapping it up in ice or taking some tylenol after I get home from school.

Get to a Dr or ER immediately. That could be a clot you are describing. The veins popping out bit - makes me 2x as worried. Don't delay - seek medical help. You need an ultrasound and a D Dimer blood test.

Sweetie:

It sounds like it is inflamed and you do need to see a doctor. Don't wait until your big appointment. Get to a clinic tomorrow even if you have to wait. You can make up school late.

Let us know how you're doing.

Please post Lisa, and tell us you've been to a clinic/the ER and have been told that we're all over-reacting over-protective busybodies. . .

If you'd have to lie to do that, please please please go to a clinic/ER NOW. Yes, this could be related. . .and yes, it could be very very serious. Now is not the time to be a tough Canadian. . .

Lisa, doesn't your school have some kind of student health service you can get to?

Everyone who posted is correct--you really need an MD to look at this and rule out the many serious possiblities.

Black poop is a serious problem. Ibuprofen might make it worse.

Swelling and pain are serious problems. Tylenol won't help the CAUSE of this problem.

Both require immediate attention.

Yes, it is worth going to the ER for this if that is your only option for immediate assistance.

No, my college has nothing at all. Its just a little part of a building (its actually just a part of the highschool thats only divided by a set of doors). I didnt take any tylenol because I'm not a fan on relying on pills. My wrist is still swollen and still feels like its on fire. I finish school kinda early tomorrow so maybe i can find someone to give me a ride to the hospital here...

Lisa, I really think you should go to ER right now. Clots are nothing to be casual about. We may all be over reacting here but your symptoms worry us. Tomorrow may not be soon enough. Please go 'now'. Make sure they do an ultrasound and D Dimer blood test.

Lisa, some info for you:

You seem to be very casual about your health. If you are not going to go to the hospital, please at least get on the internet and do some serious PhD level research on your symptoms.

You have to be able to take care of yourself in order to be truly independent. That means knowing when a situation might be dangerous to your health and doing whatever needs to be done about it (like seeking expert help).

You can put it off til tomorrow and make all kinds of excuses. You might even luck out and have it be nothing more serious than an inflammation of the tendon. But if it turns out to be really serious, then you will have totally screwed up.

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

Please do more research before you settle on nicotine. Dr. Paul New house is a psychiatrist.  His latest study involves the effect of nicotine patches on Late Life Depression which has reached no long term conclusions about the benefits.   Effects of open-label transdermal nicotine antidepressant augmentation on affective symptoms and executive function in late-life depression https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39009312/   I'm approaching the subject from the Microbiologist's point of view which shows nicotine blocks Thiamine B1 uptake and usage:   Chronic Nicotine Exposure In Vivo and In Vitro Inhibits Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Uptake by Pancreatic Acinar Cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633299/   While supplementation with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine can protect from damage done by  nicotine: Benfotiamine attenuates nicotine and uric acid-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction in the rat https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18951979/   I suggest you study the beneficial effects of Thiamine (Benfotiamine and TTFD) on the body and mental health done by Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs.  Dr. Lonsdale had studied thiamine over fifty years.   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/ I suggest you read their book Thiamine Deficiency Disease, Dysautonomia, and High Calorie Malnutrition.     Celiac Disease is a disease of malabsorption causing malnutrition.  Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.
