High Ferritin Blood Level

Hey all........It's been about 6-months since I've been online as I started a new job. Everything is going well and I have been feeling better.

My recent check-up showed an abnormally high level of Ferritin in my blood. All my other blood work was normal and I had a recent bone scan which was also normal. I did some online research for high Ferritin and I don't like the possibilities......

Any ideas on lowing the Ferritin? Anybody else have high Ferritin?

Thanks,

Cleveland Bob

This is exactly what you should do. You also need to find out why it is high. It can be genetic and is also seen frequently in smokers. If you are using a supplement with iron in it stop. Your body may be absorbing and storing it properly now that you are gluten-free. Make sure you doctor follows up on this, high iron levels for extended periods can be toxic.

Ouch, that is dangerously high! Yes, donating blood is a good way of doing this. Also, don't eat any red meat, or organ meats until your ferretin comes down.

Here is a link to a bunch of other links, that might help in figuring out what to do. Open Original Shared Link

Also, make sure your multi-vitamin (if you use one) doesn't have iron.

Wow, that is a truly high number. My ferritin reading isn't even in the double digits, so I'm taking high doses of iron to get it back up where it should be. I agree with everyone else that you should avoid iron in your food and supplements.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
