Anemic, Low B 12/folate?, But Negative Blood Test

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been going to the Columbia University celiac clinic. I went through a battery of blood tests, which said that I was negative for celiac antibodies. I was told that I am anemic and have low B-12 or B folate (not sure which) levels. I was ordered to have a endoscopy and colonoscopy. Is there still a chance it could be celiac? I have had chronic diarrhea for years. Did anybody else have this diagnosis? Will the endo/colon be able to definitively tell? For many years I was diagnosed as IBS and as hard as it would be to be a celiac, at least there would be a solution!

Please let me know if you all have any insight into this anemia issue/probability that it is celiac.

Thanks!

I believe so, although I'm not a Dr. My blood tests were negative and I refused the endo as I was required to eat gluten again. I have struggled with iron anemia and about 10 years ago was diagnoses with pernicious anemia. Based on this information and family history of autoimmune problems (thyroid and arthritis) the Dr. was suspicious and thought I may have celiac.

Unfortunately there is no "for sure" diagnosis 100% of the time. They may not find anything, but you may still have symptoms and may still have celiac. The diet, in my opionion is the "true" test. Do you feel better once you eliminate gluten? Yes, or no. Only you can decide.

Rheumatic fever at age 5 and again at age 6. Antibiotics for 6 years to prevent strep throat.

Anemia, Mono, Hepititis, Pernicious Anemia, Enlarged Heart, Osteopenia, Vitamin D deficiency, Ataxia, Digestive issues, reactive hypoglycemia, and on and on and on!

Following the SCD diet after gluten free didn't solve symptoms. Much better and getting back my life!
