Is This An Allergy?

Recommended Posts

The last two days I have been itching for some reason and yesterday I had to take two benedryl to stop. I have not eaten anything that I have not ate before. Could I be allergic to something all of a sudden that I have been eating all along? The last two days, I have eaten the same food, dinner and then left overs for lunch. So I am not sure what to do. The food I ate was nothing out of the ordinary, just baked chicken, corn, potatoes, fruit and a snapple. I haven't changed detergents, soaps, shampoos, lotions, perfumes or anything. What should I do?

I have not checked in a while, but I thought Snapple contained Gluten?? Maybe it was just the Iced Tea.... regardless, check your foods again just in case something has changed. I always rule out a gluten attach first.

As far as allergies are concerned, yes you can develope an allergy "over-night". But, if you have been overall itchy for two days in a row, I would be more inclined to look at environmental problems. It is spring after all. Everything is in bloom and it drives many people crazy. My throat itches and my ears just bother me all spring and fall. Try an over the counter allergy medicine like Claratin or some of the others. Benedryl will stop an allergic reaction, however it generally makes you VERY sleepy. The others do not make you as sleepy. You have to see which one works with your body. Some of the non-drowsy meds put me to sleep faster than a sleeping pill :)

If you had an allergic reaction to food, it would be more common to have hives, swelling, or something like that to go along with the itchy problem.

Those are just my opinions, which come from a life time of environmental and sveral years of food allergies.

Hope you feel better soon

I've never been able to take the non drowsy meds either, but Claritan works wonders for me with itching. I'm not quite sure what's bothering me either as I've gone through and replaced all the skin care and hair care with gluten-free stuff. Other than the itching I don't have any other symptoms. My only thought is that it has to do with vitamin and mineral deficiencies that I still have. I've read that anemia can causing itching.

Kimberly, is there any chance you've taken a strong antibiotic or anything like that lately? I took Cipro once and turned BRIGHT LOBSTER red and very itchy for about a day....

It could very well be seasonal. The snow is finally starting to melt here...and with it comes snow mold, to which I'm very allergic...so I'm just waiting for the allergic symptoms to hit with a vengance. Then after that is the birch tree pollen. Boy do I dread spring!

I find Reactine (same as Zyrtec in the U.S.) does a good job of elminating or at least reducing the severity of symptoms (itchy skin, eyes, sneezing, wheezing, etc.)
