Contaminated Wheat Gluten Fed To Chickens

So my question is if manufacturers routinely feed an assortment of grains to livestock and poultry, how does the gluten/corn/soy residues & proteins then not get into the human system? Is it because the animal digests the ingredient first? There is an article on CNN.com today about it about how chickens were fed the tainted feed and now humans have ate it..... I'm all about grassfed meats but my budget isn't!
