Gluten Free/casein Free Mentioned On Oprah Today

It was in regards to autism...but it was mentioned more than once and it was amazing to hear Gluten Free mentioned on Oprah. It was also touched upon how Dr's need to listen to Mother's more and display more respect to parents and their gut instincts. This also is relevant to those of us with Celiac and parents of Celiac children.

Wow, Gluten Free & Dairy Free made the Oprah show today in the discussion with two Hollywood moms re their oys that have autism. Not many details but they were very enthusiastic on how much it has helped their children.

they also mentioned how the pediatriations are clueless and actually insulting to moms. Guess we already knew that.

did anyone else see the show???

I only caught the last 10 minutes or so, but the first thing I heard was Holly Robinson-Peete say "gluten" and how when they removed wheat from her son's diet, he improved greatly (words to that effect).

I wish I had seen the whole show...

I didn't see the show, but John's cousin who is 11 has downs syndrome and autism--recently diagnosed in the last few years. One thing they mentioned to her mother about autism was a gluten free diet. It was real nice to talk to her when we first met, we had something in common to talk about. Amy (the little girl) is the sweetest girl you would ever meet, she is enrolled into the school district, so she does go to classes. Her parents really work with her too, so she has come a long way just since I met her.

I was actually super disapointed in that part. I hated that she said that they had to remove gluten and then only mentioned removing wheat........bummer for the mis-information!!! Hopefully she knows that gluten is in more than JUST wheat....

Good point Jessica. It might confuse a lot of new celiacs or parents of new celiac children.

Jessica - you're missing the point - I know you're smarter than that. You're very insightful for such a young person. Consider this: my first doctor (the one that was smart enough to run the Celiac panel on me) told me I'd have to stop eating bread if I had Celiac. He never mentioned gluten or wheat - EVER. The point is if people hear about the wheat free/dairy free diet for Autism, they'll Google it as well and figure out that gluten is in everything and is much more than just wheat. This exposure will help countless families with Autistic families and will give us a hand up as well - everyone on the gluten free diet will benefit because the more demand, the more power we have.

On the show Jenny said 'in laymens terms it means wheat free/dairy free' when Oprah asked about the diet. She said that because her purpose was not to explain the gluten-free/cf diet. She just wanted other Mothers to know how much it helped her son and that she could NOT believe none of her doctors told her about it. To that I say - why would they tell her about a diet that no industry benefits from financially? Except the gluten-free food companies I mean. No - doctors aren't going to tell people about any diet that can benefit them but they'll be the first to cram meds down our throats.

Though I don't have kids I felt so sad for all the Celiac Mothers out there who were made to feel dumb by doctor after doctor - just like Jenny and Holly were. They were talking about exactly what so many of you went through with your own kids. We owe a debt of gratitude to these two ladies. Do you know how many shows have been doing huge Autism stories lately? A LOT of them have aired in the last year and this is the first time anyone has mentioned the gluten-free/cf diet as a possible cure - though people with Celiac know all about the connection. It's a shame for all those stuggling families and if I had to pick a disease for anyone's kids to have it would be Celiac over Autism any day. Let's be happy about all the good the show did for the families with Autistic kids instead of being aggravted that the diet wasn't explained in full detail. We need to look at the big picture here.

Well she also mentioned her google degree...

AND - she did say how you heal the gut - you heal the brain & that it is all connected !!!!

& she did mention the complete yeast overgrowth from the whole body to the head...

GOOD OVERVIEW PAPERDOLL

I WATCHED THE WHOLE SHOW AND IT WAS OUTSTANDING.

GENNY'S BOOK WOULD BE A 'MUST BUY' FOR ALL AUTISM PARENTS.

SHE WAS SO POWERFUL

SHE REALLY KEPT HITTING HOME THAT THE PARENTS HAVE TO BE THE CHILD'S ADVOCATE...AND THEY ARE THE ONES WHO WILL HEAL THEIR CHILDREN...OR...GET THEM TO THEIR POTENTIAL.

SHE HIT SO MANY GOOD POINTS

TOO MANY TO MENTION HERE BUT ALL THE THINGS WE KEEP SAYING OVER AND OVER...THE MAIN THING I CAME AWAY WITH WAS

'MOTHERS INTUITION' LISTEN TO YOUR GUT..YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD BETTER THAN AN DR.

IT IS HER PERSONAL OPINION...................AND SHE KEPT STRESSING THAT....THE CHILD SHE GOT BACK AFTER THE 'MMR' UNIONIZATIONS AT A YEAR I THINK...GAVE HER BACK A TOTALLY DIFFERENT CHILD WHO WAS LOST INSIDE HIMSELF AND SHE AND MS PETE KEPT STRESSING...YOU HAVE TO BREAK DOWN THE WALL PIECE BY PIECE.

ESP MS PETE WAS SO HAPPY THAT THE CDC HAS RELEASED A NEW STATEMENT IN REGARD TO THEIR POSITION ON THE IMMUNIZATIONS.

PLEASE DON'T LET THIS THREAD TURN INTO A BIG DEBATE ON THAT 'CAUSE' ISSUE

LET'S FOCUS ON THE GLUTEN AND CASEIN......BEING FOUND BY MOM'S HELPED THEIR KIDS...NOT THE MEDICAL PROFESSION.

AGAIN..I THOUGHT I WAS AN OUTSTANDING SHOW.

Judy, thank you for the link! I missed the episode, but just went and read the article. It was very inspiring.

I saw on the last page, there was a notice that said the message boards over there were so overwhelmed with responses from viewers, that Jenny and Holly were having trouble posting answers to questions! The website people are working on the technical problems, and it said that more from Jenny and Holly will be posted soon.

I was thrilled to see that episode! I had just emailed a friend of mine who's son has Asperger's & told him about my research on celiac as it relates to autism. He said he'd check into it, but I heard through my mom that he hadn't followed through...then came yesterday's Oprah episode. Now, my friend & his wife are out buying gluten free things & looking into changing thier son's diet. Although I have thought of Oprah & her fan base as almost fanatical, I am sooooo glad that she has the power to make people really think about issues.

Thank goodness for Jenny Mcarthy's enthusiasm!!

I don't usually get to see the show because I'm at work but my nephew was sick so I was taking care of him. I about came up off the sofa when they said something about gluten-free. It's so hard to make people understand. To clarify Holly's comment she said that her son wa allegic to wheat so they took it out. My friend has a sister that is autistic and after going gluten-free I passed the info on to her mom and I think the now have her on the diet as well but I'm not sure what the out come will be since she's 18 now. All in all I thought it was at the least a very good over view.

Holy Jeepers!

There sure are alot of parents of children with autism that are TOTALLY unaware of the fact that gluten is, indeed, poison.

I keep praying for the day that Cornell some other prestigious Ivy League university comes out with definite proof and puts the doubt to rest finally! (My niece is studying Environmental Studies at Cornell and is in her fourth year - I keep on telling her to direct her research into this area!!!!)
