Can Someone Please Tell Me

Recommended Posts

Guest thatchickali

If it was you who called the Police.

Not only that but whoever you are, I would like to know how you knew where I am located.

I know I have mentioned my college in this forum, is that how you knew which police station to call?

I appreciate the concern, but that was unnecessary and just did more bad than good. The police ended up calling me out of my sorority chapter, so you can imagine my mortification. Not only that but they knocked on all my neighbor's doors. This has brought a lot of negative attention to me.

I don't know who it was, so please if it was you private message me so we could talk.

I am taking this as a violation of my trust in the people in this forum, this was the place I chose to turn to and now I feel that I can not disclose my real feelings.

My parents also got a call from the police and they do not know what in the world to do.

Anyway, I don't want to say anymore. If it was you, I would like to talk.

Thanks.

oh Ali, I am so sorry this happened to you. You know all kinds of people read these forums, that do not even post here, so no telling who it was. Gosh, even I that have met you once, do not know where you live...

& you belong to a sorority?

I will say that people have had loved ones in their lives commit suicide & people do not take it lightly.

I just sent you an email & I also emailed a contact in Lubbock that has celiac disease & belongs to the Houston group to see if she would be available as a friend. I have not met her, just got her email addy on our list...

I was not involved in the original discussion, and didn't call it in, but all suicide threats on message boards are taken very seriously. If they are not reported to the authorities, and something happens, the owner of the board can be held legally responsible.

Ali, I have no idea who called the police. The problem is, that when you say in a forum that you are thinking of committing suicide, people will take it seriously, and well they should. If then somebody knows where you live, they might feel they have to do something, so they won't be guilty of ignoring your plea for help, in case you follow through with your threat.

Whoever called the police was obviously fearing for your safety and felt that he/she needed to do something. So, please don't be too angry with that person, they were just trying to help.

I really hope you will find some help for yourself, because it is too hard to get out of depression all by yourself. I know, I tried for over forty years until I finally went to counselling eight years ago. It made a big difference.

I do realize the person had an honest motive. I would like to know who it was and I would like to know how my information was found.

It is more of a curiousity. Of course I am not happy about how the authorities handled it but I am not blaming the person who called.

I just want to know.

I just don't feel comfortable being in the dark about this.

Ali, I read your other posts when I was at work today, but I can't post at work, so I didn't respond. I also teach part-time at a community college- just got done now (and, no, it wasn't me that called). I am so sorry you are feeling bad and and I really do know what you are feeling, at least a little bit. I had really bad depression in college and my parents had abandoned me. I was working to support myself, with no money from my parents. I'm not sure how much of my depression was celiac, but I did have symptoms back then. I hope your sessions with your counselor help. You got a lot of better advice from others today but I agree, take it one hour at a time and lean on supporters, especially if you can get some help from the college health center. I also hope it doesn't keep you from posting here, even if you have to change to a new screen name. If I was in Texas, I would have you over for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I'm up in Washington State. Best wishes.

I have no idea who found you. I have been told that it is pretty easy to trace a computers IP address. The authorities use tools to trace addresses all the time to find offenders of children. I'm sure they used the same tools for this.

Ok i went to your profile trying to figure out how someone would get your info, and this is what i came up with, Does anyone that belong to this group, have you on your myspace account. I would guess that is how they would know exactly were you are located, even tho im not sure what is on your myspace since it is private, but has it always been private. This is one reason i dont put pics of me, in many places.

paula

also what they could of done is used your pic and your first name and sent it to the college and they got your last name that way.

I am sorry and I understand how it feels when someone finds you and you don't know how. (It certainly wasn't me) I know my husband says its really easy to find most people through ISP searches and the like. I'm sorry you're going through such a tough time. ((hugs))

That must have been very disconcerting to you. I don't know if you will ever find out but the person who called '911' did it because they were seriously concerned for you. It may not even have had anything to do with the board. If you live with others it is very difficult to hide the amount of mental pain someone is in, also most college dorms or sororities have a head person, whether student or adult who oversees everyones safety. Walls are often thin and they could have been alerted by a roomie or other resident. Whatever the circumstances the person who called did it because they care deeply for you.

Unfortunately we lose so many young people during the early years of college that people do sometimes panic when someone shows suicidal ideation. This could be a good thing that happened. Now both the school and your family know how much you are struggling. Many times suicidal expressions are born out of frustration and hopelessness, you have a lot on your shoulders right now. I hope this bad experience at least enables you to find a way to help yourself deal with things. (((((((HUGS)))))))))

I almost didn't want to post the above, but I felt that if someone could figure it out I would want them to tell me.

Just a thought ... you might want to delete that post and PM it to her ... not that it's not simple to do ... it's actually a scary thought that it's so simple!

Good point. Will try to take it down. I also thought it would be good for everyone to know that all of your info. is out there. You should make a habit of googling your name and any nicknames you use to see if anything is being posted.

Yes. I was just about to suggest googling your real name. Then delete anything you have an option of deleting.

I didnt read earlier about your depression but Im sorry your going through it. I cant post any advice since I dont know about your earlier post but if you want to pm me Im a good listener.

Im sorry the way your identity was handled on here and I wasnt the one who did it. Its one of the main reasons I dont put pictures up or use the same username anywhere. Myspace also is so easy to track people. I can imagine how you must feel, Im sure the poster or mods or admin maybe? had your best interests at heart but I'm sure you are feeling very vulnerable right now with good reason. Please dont stop posting though there are not many good support forums out there for celiac, this is one of the best. If you want to change your username and set up a new account to help you feel more secure.

(((((HUGS)))))

Sweetie I did an easy check that anyone could do (per dandelions comments) and I found out way too much information about you. You need to change your user names, get a book and write them down if you need to to remember them. You are too easy to find. Another poster on here before needed to change her name due to identity reasons, please do the same. Even though this action was done because they were worried about you the web can be dangerous with that much information out there.

I just want to know.

I just don't feel comfortable being in the dark about this.

I understand that you are upset about what happened, but I must agree that the person who did this only wanted to make sure you were OK.

I suggest you look through all the places you have put up private information - I know MySpace is supposed to be really bad with keeping people's identity private. My youngest daughter used to have an account, or whatever you call it there, but no longer. She never put anything on there that could be traced to where she lives, no school, no city, no picture, no name.

If there is another back door way to find out about somebody on MySpace, that is truly scary in this day and age.

I do have a question for you, though: How do you know it was somebody online who called the police? Could it have been one of your friends or relatives who just did not want to be identified? Sometimes people are very afraid of fessing up to something like this because they are afraid that the person they are concerned about will get angry, just like you seem to be.

A person who would not take talk about suicide seriously, is simply not following good human values; suicide is a terrible thing that not only makes the loved ones of the person committing suicide suffer, but the person who is killing him or herself. Better to catch the person before it gets to that point and with love and care and professional help, guide the person back to a healthier view of him or herself.

If you never find out who this person is, try to assume that the person probably meant no harm. Could it have been somebody who is involved in this website as a webmaster, or moderator? How much information did you give this web site when you signed up?

Remember also, that some professions are expected to report abuse and serious mental health issues if they think somebody will harm themselves or others. Since this web site kind of comes under that category, because it deals with people's health, could this apply to this web site?

And go through and find out what you have posted about yourself on web sites.

I hope you will feel better and keep seeking out help. As a teenager I was also suicidal for a short time, but never did more than play with the thought for a few months after I lost my mom at age 15.

I am sorry to hear that you are struggling with depression, been there a few times and it is not fun. Like being in a dark hole. Big hugs and keep coming here for support - to just vent or commiserate - whatever you need.

Just a heads up to all - and I have seen this in our small town.

If someone suspects a person might be in danger - from themselves or from someone else (abuse). They contact the police - the police then use their authority to trace the computer where the email originates. All computers have an IP number....that's how they trace hackers etc.

I understand you being upset about having the police show up at your door. That is one possible way your were tracked down.

We live in a small town - a young boy was using the library computer to communicate with an online friend (who turned out to be an adult with questionable motives). Plice were able to track the origin of the emails via the public computer - took about 45 minutes. The boy had gone missing. They found him - he was safe.

Not everyone can trace the IP address - but if they felt somone may be at risk - the police will.

I am glad you pointed this out. And I am glad the boy was found safe and sound. I do not know what it would be like to be on the receiving end of such intervention, but I can only imagine that it would be a situation with very mixed feelings.

The internet can be used for good and bad. And perhaps the good is that help can sometimes be given to those who truly need it, but are not able for whatever reason to find it for themselves. And with that, I am NOT suggesting that you, thatchickali are not able to get help - I am just speaking in general terms. You seem like a very smart and capable young woman who IS able to take care of herself.

To thatchickali: I cannot imagine that anybody on here thinks badly of you for reacting like you have, nor for confessing that you have problems with depression. Many of us have struggled with serious depression and anxiety issues that can often be traced back to our diet (gluten and other food sensitivities). Just keep coming back here, because there is a lot of help here...

I did talk to the people around me who may have known about the depression I've been going through but the police brought me the print out of the thread that I posted, and I asked if my close friends and family even knew the site existed. They all said no. When I get time I will make a new account, but I don't know how to completely delete this one? Will all my old posts disappear?

Also, my myspace is private, I don't allow any friends on it that I don't know personally. And I will look into google and figure out which websites I need to delete my name from.

Once I did a search for my name that had my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ON IT!!!!!(Along with my birthday and county of birth). It was a birth registry of all the people born in the county I was born in.

I had my parents look into it, I don't know if that is still up or not but they should not be allowed to have those kind of things online.

I still have not heard from who called, and I would like to know who it was. Again I am not mad, I would just like to talk.

Okay, bye now.

Ali
