Vacation In Key West

Recommended Posts

Hello All....

Some of you know that I am new here and new to gluten-free life. Well, I am traveling to Key West for New Year at the end of this month, as I have in years past. I would imagine that it would be somewhat easy to eat gluten free down there... I can focus on dinners of grilled fishes and steaks and baked potatoes/fresh veggies. But I do love frozen drinks, and I'll have to check on those. Anyway........... my question is this: Has anyone been to Key West and know of any spots that are particularly Celiac friendly or gluten free/healthy eating friendly?

Any info you can provide would be thoroughly appreciated!

thanks,

Joe (gluten free for 5 days and counting!!)

I KNOW!! i hope someone has some suggestions for me! but like i said, everything down there is fresh stuff... so it should be so tough to get my hands on some grilled seafood, steak, chicken and the basics like veggies, potatoes and rice.

but i love clearwater beach also! i play beach volleyball and would travel down there annually in october for tournaments when i was younger.

you can have the grouper without the sandwich part! it'll be just as good :)

Yeah, but without the bun AND the breading!?! it'll be tough. Some friends of ours from up nort' here live in Indian Shores during our nasty weather season and he's big into volleyball too! You've probably played with or against him!! As per your original question about frozen drinks, I read somewhere that all of TGIF's frozen drinks are, so hopefully they will be at places down there too. We're also brand new to this, but I've found the search box at the top of this forum's front page works really good.

I just returned home from a trip to Key West and wanted to share 3 restaurants that were gluten-savvy and delicious.

Azur - Off the main drag, this is an upscale, small restaurant with gluten-free knowledgeable staff. My partner and I shared the ribeye and black grouper - both were excellent and the kitchen made sure there was no cross contamination for us.

The Cafe - Mostly a vegetarian restaurant, this place knows about celiac although we had to educate our server about cross-contamination in the fryer. Had mussels with a side of rice instead of garlic bread and a delicious spinach salad. I even got to have gluten free beer and gluten free cheesecake. Yum.

Conch Republic Seafood Company - I was wary at first because this is a big place, but the staff knew all about celiac - in fact, the server told us that they are in the process of creating a celiac menu. Totally enjoyed their gluten free conch chowder and jerk spiced chicken.
