Celiac?

Hi,

I have been having some stomach and intestinal issues for the last nine months. It started off as just nausea, but however has gained some frrequent bathroom trips, cramps, intestinal pains, gas and bloating. My GI and primamry care doc have had me do an extensive series of tests like endoscopy, a barrium swallow, and ultrasound of my gallbladder, an ultra sound of my "girl parts" and random blood and fecal tests (not to mention the initial pregnancy test 9 months ago-thank god I'm not preg, my husband and I would be so upset!)

A few months ago my GI put me on amytriptiline which is an antidepressent (at much higher doses than what I was using) with the positive side effect of decreasing nausea, decreasing migraines (about 2x mo since I was 15) but causes weight gain! I went from about 135 lbs to 155 in just over 8 weeks! (I'm 5'8) I just stopped the medication due to the side effects and that it wasn't working very well.

I have always been a sleepy person (8-9 hrs a night is never enough) and have gone to the doc for exhaustion. But, that medicine made my sleepyness increase but olike 200%. In addition to nausea and migrane prevention, at the same lower concentration is perscribed as a sleep aid! So, needless to say, on the meds, I was drowsy for at least 4 hrs after waking. Now, I am still tired and exhuasted, but not as bad as on that medication!

I started having all these issues about a month after a pretty serious surgical procedure (totally unrelated) and just after being accepted to graduate school, though I wouldn't say I was under a ton of stress. Also, at that time I was doing Atkins, though not as good as I should have been. I was down to about 128-130 lbs (lowest in my life!) By the way, I am 24.

This week, my primamry care doc thought to test me for food allergies and sensitivities, so had me do a blood celiac test and some more stool samples.

I have been on that medicine for so long that I forgot what I felt like without it, that I just wasnt hungry and always sick to my stomach. Since Saturday, I haven't wanted to eat anything, because I always feel worse.

I don't know how long these results take, but do any of you have advice? Part of me wants this to be it so I dont have to be poked and prodded as much, but the majority of me really doesn't want this because I love pizza and chocolate cake and would miss having them ever.

Thanks in advance!

erbadger :D

Hi erbadger, Welcome to the board!

I too had such nausea that I thought I was pregnant, had my doctor run a pregnancy test too and of course it came back negative but the point is the nausea was so bad and lasted all day and was not normal.

My suggestion to you is: Order a stool panel test from Open Original Shared Link if you receive negative blood results and continue to have the same problems. I had all the same symptoms as you and my blood-work came back negative but my stool panel test came back positive. A lot of times if the disease or intolerance is just beginning it may not register in the blood or has not done any damage to be seen in a biopsy.

A gluten free diet can be intimidating and can be overwhelming at first but there are a lot of foods out there we can eat, you just have to search for them. You mentioned you liked Pizza and cake, well you can still have those. There is a pizza made with Rice crust that is pretty good that is made by Amy's Organic. As far as the cake you will have to get in the kitchen and bake some, I still have not got the cake down pat but I will soon enough :D . The gluten free pantry sells an awesome Brownie mix that is better than the regular ones and for now that satisfies my cake craving!!!

I hope this information is helpful and I do hope you begin to feel better soon!

And I’m anaemic, however I’m also female and vegetarian. I had an iron trans a couple of years ago however it’s starting to dwindle and taking supplements doesn’t seem to work. I can’t seem to absorb it.

Hi, I attended a neurologist appt last Tuesday, which I nearly cancelled, due to ongoing numbness and tingling in toes to mid foot. One of the first things he asked was ‘are you celiac’. I’m not. He thought all reflexes were ok but at the last minute decided on nerve conduction tests which were low normal. He was a little confused as he felt they should be better and tried a new set of probs, all the time, giving me multiple shocks which were not enjoyable lol. Anyway, he’s now ordered tests for myeloma, and all the vitaminy things that so many of you mention on here, also tests looking for autoimmune responses. I already have Hashimotos. Interestingly, to me, but maybe someone out there can relate or knows more than i do, although I was a nurse, but ED not ‘weird symptoms’  nurse. Anyway back to the interesting thing, I took duramine in 2013 to lose weight which caused a massive panic attack when I stopped taking it and half my hair fell out. I only took it for a week but it was horrible and I regret it. It triggered ongoing panic attacks which are horrendous. So I feel like I’m a bit crazy. Then in 2020 I had this sudden onset of horrible pain when trying to eat a cinnamon roll. It continued and I lost around 20 kgs. I had two gastroscopes and a colonoscopy and they were all normal. I scored a barium swallow and CT angiogram. All normal. The pain subsided a little but I was left with reflux and an awful feeling that I couldn’t get air when I ate some foods. This was not anxiety.  The anxiety was separate and I still maintain this. This was something to do with eating. It was like the air was thick but I wasn’t short of breath. I just had the sensation I was, then it triggered anxiety. Anyway, I had other weird things- couldn’t bend knees to shave legs in shower lol. Knees felt stiff and swollen but they weren’t. Knee WOUld swell up randomly but mri showed minimal issues. A bit of a meniscus degeneration but insignificant. Then the buzzing sensations in my head, the feeling like someone was stabbing me with something sharp. So now, I pre empted his tests, although I don’t think I’m celiac because it should have come up on gastroscopy, I’ve gone off gluten. Since Tuesday last week so 9 days. Since then I don’t appear to be as constipated, I realised I got through today without a nap and I’m not tired, maybe it’s just today and not related but I get very tired normally and sleep straight after work often, I can bend my knees and shave my legs lol, the buzzing vibrating has gone from my head, I had to call and ambulance as my heart decided we were off on a run, but we weren’t running and I’ve been a bit twitchy at bed time when trying to sleep, reflux is improving, I did get the weird suffocating feeling a bit when eating today but not as bad normall. Tingling and numbness still present and I felt like it moved up my legs a bit today but I’m a bit jittery. So I don’t know if it’s celiac disease or a gluten intolerance but I think, and it may be wishful thinking because my symptoms do make life a bit challenging, but maybe I’m feeling better. I don’t feel as cloudy. My thinking feels crisper. Like there’s no buzzing and I’m not fighting to break through the cloudiness now. I hope so much that this may help me feel a bit better moving forward. It would be a miracle as I really have struggled to work and parent and keep the house clean and I’m always anxious and exhausted.  If you get this far, please tell me if you you can relate to any of the above. Oh and tonsils out 5 years ago but before that antibiotics multiple times a year, sometimes intramuscular because they were so bad.  Op was meant to take 30 mins, it took 1.5 hours due to size of them.

Enlarged lymph nodes in neck and groin with celiac are not uncommon. They can take time to reduce even after going gluten-free. Monitoring is key.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?
