Once I was diagnosed back in 2005, Dr. Fasano from the University of Maryland had me get follow-up blood work every 6 months to make sure I was properly avoiding gluten. Now I've moved a little too far from Baltimore to make the trek for doctor's appointments so I was wondering if I should ask my family doctor to write a prescription to check my antibody counts every six months. Do others do this?

My son and I had our antibodies tested twice in the first year. We now have them checked once a year.

How often should follow-up testing occur?

New celiacs should receive follow-up testing twice in the first year after their diagnosis. The first appointment should occur three to six months after the diagnosis, and the second should occur after 1 year on the gluten-free diet. After that, a celiac should receive follow-up testing on a yearly basis.

Thanks! I'm guessing my insurance wouldn't have any issues with this.

I bet they won't--I had my antibodies checked last summer after 2 years, and my insurance covered it.
