It is possible that the mashed potatoes contained gluten. I just found out while in Mexico that some restaurants will put wheat flour into their mashed potatoes! I haven't got a clue why anybody would want to do that, but maybe because flour is cheaper than potatoes? Or maybe the mashed potatoes will be creamier?

It taught me to not take anything for granted, and to ask in the future if there is flour in the mashed potatoes before ordering.

Of course, the chicken could have been coated in a spice mix containing flour before frying, which also wouldn't be unusual. You really need to ask those questions before ordering anything in restaurants!

Chicken Steak, if memory serves me, is usually breaded. What makes it chicken steak is that they batter it the same as they would fried chicken. Unless this was a specifically listed as a gluten free menu item it is not something that we should eat. If it was on their gluten-free menu then it is possible CC got you or that you are reacting to something you ate up to 3 days ago. For many a gluten reaction is delayed so if you are new to the diet look at what you ate for up to 4 days before you reacted.

Hi, I am new since January to the gluten free diet... you really can't trust that the cooks etc, are going to prepare things the way they are supposed to on the diet. I have been told this by a waitress in a Florida Carrabas, which has a gluten free menu. In Va. The manager/owner was completely on top of the gluten diet, saw that i had a menu, and even had gluten free pasta to serve. I have been very careful in restarant; order plan, suspect anything likde mashed potatoes is going to have a thickening agent in it. order baked potatoes plain, chicken, meal , fish no seasoning... ior salads with steamed shrimp..

good luck, hope you feel better

I was under the impression that TGIF's was not very celiac safe. I have steered clear from their places.

Any info on this?

the chicken wan not breaded, but maybe those mush potatoes had something in it.

Other that that broccoli and green bean I guess don't have gluten?

I have to try ask for gluten free menu, didn't know that restaurant can have it.

Looks like I'll stay away from restaurants because after 3 days still feeling funny, tingling and dizziness.

Not worthy.

Just wanted to add that a lot of marinades have wheat in them! I didn't know that until I found out that McDonald's grilled chicken has wheat products in it!

Here is the entry from their website: Grilled Chicken Breast Filet:

Chicken breast filets with rib meat, water, seasoning (salt, sugar, food starch-modified, maltodextrin, spices, dextrose, autolyzed yeast extract, hydrolyzed [corn gluten, soy, wheat gluten] proteins, garlic powder, paprika, chicken fat, chicken broth, natural flavors (plant and animal source), caramel color, polysorbate 80, xanthan gum, onion powder, extractives of paprika), modified potato starch, and sodium phosphates. CONTAINS: SOY AND WHEAT.

You have to be really careful when eating out!
