I just posted a note about this earlier today...

I grew up in Wisconsin and freely admit to being a cheesehead! All of my grandparents were raised on dairy farms. I also lived in Minnesota for ten years while I was going to college and graduate school.

Ironically, my son is intolerant to casein :o I'm hoping I can have some dairy products again when I'm done breastfeeding. In 1997 I went to Mali for a semester and was about 95% dairy/gluten free... I was in horrible agony when I started eating bowls of cereal again. Wish I knew about intolerances back then.

Where did you go to school? But hello fellow cheesehead! Ha ha it's a shame that the packer's aren't doing as well as I hope this season. Hopefully they get it together, like they did in the first few games!

I went to Macalester College and then the University of Minnesota for graduate school.

I was SO stubborn about dairy. Even though I felt like I was going to die every time I had a BM, I just could not envision a world without cheese. I stopped drinking milk for a while, but I slowly started eating cheese... then yogurt, and finally (after about six months) I was able to drink milk again... as much as 16oz at a time. Wow. I guess my body adapted, but before I went off gluten I was having a lot of abdominal pain again.

I crave cheese, but if it gives me trouble the next time I try it, I'm giving it up for good! It was weird going up to Wisconsin this summer. My parents know my son is intolerant to cow's milk and they were supportive... but it was like Ripley's Believe It or Not. You can't eat ice cream? We got you some cheese curds... oh wait. Yesterday I was fantasizing about deep-fried, beer-battered cheese curds. :P It's a good thing such foods are not readily available in southern Indiana. Mozzarella sticks are not the same.

i also grew up a cheesehead. thankfully i can still eat dairy products, as long as they are gluten free of course. i dont think i would be able to live without cheesecurds! i live in minnesota now. i was diagnosed with celiac disease about a month ago and its all still so new to me. i have been doing good at avoiding major/obvious sources of gluten but still struggling with the hidden gluten. its cool to meet people in the same region. i am not alone.....lol

That's how I used to feel about dairy products too. If someone had told me five years ago that I would be giving up dairy products, I would have told them they were CRAZY. Then I lost a baby... for no apparent reason... when my chances of loss were supposed to be less than 1%. I went in for a routine ultrasound and there was no heartbeat. I hope you never find out first-hand how completely devastating that is. My son, who was born 15 months later, is intolerant to casein... I would literally do anything to keep him healthy. Even giving up cheese :D I only found out within the last couple of months that I have hypothyroidism and I'm intolerant to gluten... both of these increase your risk of pregnancy loss. My husband is hoping we can have at least one more child. I was on the fence, but I'm feeling more confident that we can try again if I continue to do well on the gluten-free diet.

I feel for that guy in the thread about Italian heritage and giving up pasta. That's what it's like giving up dairy when you're from Wisconsin. Welcome, fellow cheesehead :)

You are absolutely correct. If it was for my child I would definitely give up dairy products. Im so sorry to hear about the loss of your child. I could not imagine what that would be like. I dont have any children but its certainly something Im concerned about having celiac disease. And also congrats on the birth of your baby boy!

      Again you are invited to join Johnny Patout, LCSW for Baton Rouge's first emotional healing support group meeting to assist those living with celiac disease manage the emotional challenges so many of us face. Most often the emotional disturbances include depression, disinterest in normal activities, insomnia, grief, mood changes, anxiety, inability to concentrate, extreme concern about managing a gluten-free lifestyle and other emotional and behavioral challenges.

    Hi Lfortson, I assume you are on the gluten-free diet?  So no wheat, rye or barley?  That's good, but there are about 10% of celiacs who react to oats also.  So you might want to get rid of oats for several months and see if things improve. Another somewhat common food issue is dairy.  Some people can't digest lactose (cow milk sugar), and some can't digest casein (cow milk protein).  So it might help to eliminate all dairy for several months also.  Almond milk is a possible substitute
    Thank you for all of the suggestions and information.  I will see a lot of the symptoms that I have that I didn't mention listed caused by lack of certain enzymes.  I have blood tests every 3 months. That is when I noticed my cholesterol, etc. not in check.  I eat too many carbohydrates because it causes less diarrhea than a lot of vegetables.  But in talking to 3 of my sisters they are already on medication for the problem.   One has Celiacs the other has Sjorgrens which I also have.  I'm conce
    For the fog and memory, it can be many things, the brain requires certain ratios and amounts of fat to function, it also requires b-vitamins the full spectrum among other amino acids, minerals and vitamins, nerve functions require magnesium, potassium and other things to fire right.  Celiac can hamper the ability to break down and absorb nutrients, digestive issues and enzymes can further complicate this, and trying to eat the right ratios of foods.
