Recovery From Osteoporosis

Recommended Posts

For those of you with osteoporosis, has anyone experienced dramatic improvement with a gluten free diet?

I have probably had celiac at least 12 years before diagnosis and a year and a half after diagnosis. My bone mass density has gone from -4 to -3 in that time and I am hoping to improve it some more. Has anyone experienced a return to normal bone density? What can I expect?

Thanks,

Betty

I have osteopenia, not yet osteoporosis. Since going gluten-free, the numbers have not gotten worse and now have begun to gradually move in the right direction. Apparently it is a long process but being gluten-free keeps any further damage from being a given fact. Here is what I was told to do:

Completely separate dairy from any meat meal by at least two hours to keep from blocking absorption of the calcium. Limit intake of caffiene or cocoa with dairy. Regularly eat foods high in calcium since that is the most absorbable form. Supplement with calcium that contains both vitamin D and magnesium.

So far, it has worked. I hope to one day get out of this higher risk category.
