Looking For Help/guidance

Hi Group,

I'm 27/m living in Dublin (not Irish) and have had several pains over the years, I'm looking for guidance and reassurance as I'm moving soon and am in a bit of additional stress so most of my symptoms are elevated by stress. Never the less, I would like to meet people and find out more about my symptoms.

In short, my mother has IBS and my grandfather is now suffering from a cancer in his large intestines. I've has pains for years with depression, and "funny moods" thought the years. Lately I have noticed that tomatoes cause problems then I was suspecting bread as I would feel pain after eating cake and cookies. It was getting bad so I went to the doc this month and got a blood test, the results were off the chart that I had Celiac and no other alegires indicated. My GP simply said that I should go gluten free and come back in some time if it gets worse.

I have been gluten free for about a week and half, feeling better but sometimes getting bloated. What I had before I went gluten free was numbness on the left side of my body (near the ears, neck and head). These for the most part are gone. But I go get stressed and my mind goes into clouds, I can't concentrate at all and this is really effecting my work. At times I feel abdominal shocks and feel food in my large intestines move (not properly digested?). The pains pass after a bowel movement. I had hemorrhoid problems and was advised to drink lots of fluids.

In short, I feel that I am getting better. When I am at home and relaxing reading a book I feel fine (alergies to work? :) I have a suspision that my body was so destroyed with gluten (thus the reason for the results simply stating *>100). I was having withdraw sysmtoms during the weekend and can only asume that my body is readjusting to the new diet.

Any comments welcome.

Hey there!

Welcome to the forum! This is a great place to learn about being a celiac and to get all sorts of info. Don't get discouraged if your symptoms seem to cmoe back in thee early stages of your diet. It's going to take time for you to heal. Just stick with it. I've been gluten free since October and I still have some rough days even when I know I haven't ingested any gluten. Best of luck to you!

Hi. :)

Some of your symptoms may be related to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly B vitamins. If your GP has not done blood work to check this out, then he/she doesn't know much about Celiac.

Welcome to the group. It does take some time to heal and to learn your way around the gluten free lifestyle. I would suggest asking your doctor to check your levels for iron, ferritin, B12, folate, calcium and vitamin D at the minimum. Are you already supplementing? If you are make sure the doctor knows as this can affect the tests. The best example is folate which can mask a B12 deficiency.

Some of us need to watch the amount of dairy we consume at first or drop it all together. The same area that makes the enzymes we need to digest dairy are the ones damaged by celiac. Many can add dairy back in with no problem after they heal.

At first you should try to avoid processed foods or eating in restaurants, the exception being restaurants that have actual gluten free menus if you have any there.

Eat simple, meat, fresh or single ingredient frozen veggies and fruits, nut butters, rice, potatoes etc are all naturally gluten free in their 'natual unprocessed state'.

      So, I contacted Scott Adams, the author of that article and also the creator/admin of this website, and pointed out to him the need to clarify the information in the paragraph in question. He has now updated the paragraph and it is clear that the DGP-IGA does serve the purpose of circumventing the false negatives that IGA deficiencies can generate in the tTG-IGA antibody test.

      Has anyone experimenced enlarged lymph nodes with celiac? Both in the neck and groin area. Imaging of both areas have said that lymph nodes are reactive in nature. However, they have been present for months and just wondering how long this may take to go down. Been gluten-free for about two months. Blood counts are normal.

      Hmm interesting I just assumed that any “IGA” tests including the DPG iga would be negative in a person who is IGA deficient but maybe that is not the case for the DPG test.

      If you were just diagnosed I can say that if you go 100% gluten-free should should see dramatic improvement of your symptoms over the next few months, but the hard part is to stay gluten-free. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
